Inventing the Enemy: Essays, by Umberto Eco

Inventing the Enemy covers a wide range of topics on which Umberto Eco has written and lectured for the past ten years, from a disquisition on the theme that runs through his most recent novel, The Prague Cemetery—every country needs an enemy, and if it doesn’t have one, must invent it—to a discussion of ideas that have inspired his earlier novels. Along the way, he takes us on an exploration of lost islands, mythical realms, and the medieval world. Eco also sheds light on the indignant reviews of James Joyce’s Ulysses by fascist journalists of the 1920s and 1930s, and provides a lively examination of Saint Thomas Aquinas’s notions about the soul of an unborn child, censorship, violence, and WikiLeaks. These are essays full of passion, curiosity, and obsessions by one of the world’s most esteemed scholars and critically acclaimed, best-selling novelists.

Umberto Eco: "It seems we cannot manage without an enemy."
By John Williamson
First introduced to Umberto Eco after seeing the 1986 film "The Name of the Rose" shortly after it was released, I was enthusiastically describing the performances by Sean Connery and F. Murray Abraham to a friend. She asked if I had read the book, which I had not, and she offered to loan me her copy. I read it and had to get my own, and The Name of the Rose became a personal favorite, closely followed by Foucault's Pendulum (1988), my favored conspiracy theory novel.

But the author is also an excellent essayist, and his new title Inventing the Enemy: Essays does not disappoint. Always informative, often thought provoking, and frequently entertaining, this one will appeal to fans of this Italian novelist, philosopher, semiotician and literary critic. For those who are new to Umberto Eco and want a sampler, it's an excellent place to start.

The title essay here, "Inventing the Enemy" is the first, and ties in to a topic of his earlier novel, The Prague Cemetery, by illustrating how the presence of an enemy is essential to a nation's success. The first pages set the theme, as one finds early into this essay:

"Having an enemy is important to not only define our identity but also to provide us with an obstacle against which to measure our system of values and, in seeking to overcome it, to demonstrate our own worth. So when there is no enemy, we have to invent one."

The author skillfully illustrates his hypothesis, using Osama bin Laden, 'The Negro', Austrians and gypsies who 'stink', and Jews to illustrate how we cannot seem to manage without an enemy. Romanians (in Italy), along with criminals and prostitutes, witches, "ugly ducklings" (quoting from Shakespeare's 'Richard III'), and the excesses of hate in George Orwell's novel 'Nineteen Eighty-Four,' to name a few.

His essay "Absolute and Relative" delves into several philosophies relating to the ideas presented in the title, and while the author explains concepts regarding both the absolute and the relative, he concurrently shows how neither term can be exactly understood. We are left without the pleasure of solving the ambiguities of the absolute and the relative, but the process of investigating these notions is entirely satisfying in its own right.

Eco's following essay, "The Beauty of the Flame," focuses on fire, and the author notes how fire, the "divine element" can help support life, but can also extinguish it. The flame has such enormously conflicting attributes, and the author takes an outwardly understandable subject and builds it to a captivating mystery.

"Treasure Hunting" delves into various religious icons, both known and unfamiliar, from the Crown of Thorns to the swaddling clothes of Jesus, to name a few. And it isn't just religious artifacts that Eco touches upon; there are such diverse items as Elvis Presley's Cadillac(s) to the items offered in Christie's auction catalogs. And one senses the author's dry wit just below the surface with some of these.

Each essay here offers something fascinating. "Fermented Delights" will surprise the reader. "No Embryos in Paradise" will be provocative for some readers, where Eco assesses St. Thomas Aquinas's theories regarding embryos and their souls. The author skillfully avoids taking a hard stance on issues such as abortion, using this essay to assess Thomas's beliefs. It does, however, offer food for thought to a topic that does cause much debate in the contemporary world.

Without delving into these, Eco examines the controversial with his typical depth of view. "Thoughts on WikiLeaks" looks at the ongoing WikiLeaks scandal, and some will agree with Eco's observations, while others will not. "Censorship and Silence" examines various means of restricting the media, noting that "Noise becomes a cover." And regarding noise, I had to laugh at his comment: "Look at that idiot walking along the street, wearing his iPod headphones..." The rest of his observations here in this essay are profound.

Eco's explorations of "Imaginary Astronomies," complete with historical illustrations is highly entertaining, while his essay, "Why the Island Is Never Found," is to this reader one of the more fascinating, offering a geographical combination of fact and fantasy, highly illustrated, and why islands become lost... and are never found.

There are other essays here, and all of them are good to excellent. I've left no spoilers here, but leave the reader to find the joy of exploring them and their diversity, as they are always good food for thought.

For those who enjoy Eco in essay form, his earlier Misreadings (1993) is still in print, and offer the reader vintage satires written between 1959 and 1972. In this his "The Discovery of America" chronicles Columbus' 1492 landing via news casting techniques used for man's first walk on the moon. His highly irreverent How to Travel with a Salmon & Other Essays show this curmudgeon at his literary best, and is a personal favorite.

The author's creativity knows no bounds. These essays in this book illustrate the range of the wit and wisdom of this author, and it doesn't take long to understand why Umberto Eco is considered by many to be one of the greatest essayists and authors of our time. If you like to think and read at the same time, this book of essays is highly recommended.

From dense to delightful
By Martina A. Nicolls
Inventing the Enemy and Other Occasional Writings is an exceptionally eclectic collection of previously published or presented essays written in a variety of styles, from scholastic to wistful, and dense to delightful.

Just as I was in a caf reading the first essay, "Inventing the Enemy" a young man with Planet Enemy walked by. In Eco's piece, from a lecture at Bologna University on May 15, 2008, he explores the notion of the enemy - who we, collectively and individually, regard as our historical enemies, but also our cultural enemies, whether real or perceived or invented. For example, he cites ancient to contemporary texts to illustrate his point, from Marcus Cicero's 63BC Orations against Catiline to Jean-Paul Satre's No Exit (1944) to George Orwell's Nineteen Eight-Four (1949), as well as historical events (global conflicts). He writes of people's intolerance of other races, lower classes, and of people who are different from "us." "The enemy is ugly," he states, and adds, "The need (for an enemy) is second nature even to a mild man of peace. In his case the image of the enemy is simply shifted from a human object to a natural or social force that in some way threatens us and has to be defeated, whether it be capitalistic exploitation, environmental pollution, or third-world hunger."

Basing our lives on "this Other" and finding "this Other intolerable because to some degree he is not us" we "create our own hell," Eco writes. The enemy springs from our own fears, insecurities, intolerances, and even virtuous causes. So when we see Planet Enemy on a T-shirt we remember our own fictional heroes and villains, but we may also reflect on good versus evil, and them against us.

In his second essay, "Absolute and Relative" - a lecture presented during the Milanesiana festival on July 9, 2007, Eco explores the idea of truth, of cultural relativism, of moral relativism, and of faith and conviction. He examines the history of truth, what is a subjective fact, and that which may be open to interpretation (and therefore open to dispute) according to a set of definitions, rules of physics, or some other means, such as history, philosophy, or divinity. Each has their own "various degrees of verifiability or acceptability." He ponders whether "if there were no facts but only interpretations, then an interpretation would be an interpretation of what?" and "if interpretation interprets each other, there would still have to have been an object or event in the first place that has spurred us to interpret."

Not all of Eco's 14 essays are as esoteric as the two mentioned above. The light-hearted "Living by Proverbs" is comical, and the "Censorship and Silence" is a thought-provoking off-the-cuff piece, while "Thoughts on Wikileaks" is sure to evoke controversy. "Why the Island is Never Found" talks of the fascination people have for islands, and the creation of maps as explorers sought far off islands: islands lost and islands found and islands that don't exist.

Readers will find something of interest in this heterogeneous collection. And with the density of some essays, re-reading will bring twice the pleasure, or twice the pain. And because one does not lead into the other, the essays can be cherry-picked according to a reader's moods and concentration levels. At any level, the "occasional writings" are intellectual and influential.

Lots of good stuff
By Phelps Gates
I've always found Umberto Eco's novels rather frustrating, since I end up spending most of my energy in trying (usually unsuccessfully) to solve the puzzles rather than in enjoying the story. This book is unencumbered with narrative and gives us Eco's insights into a wide variety of subjects. He's a fox rather than a hedgehog, and I've rarely seen a collection of essays that ranged over a wider area! We hear his thoughts on relics, both sacred (Christ's foreskin) and secular (Elvis's Cadillac), an astonishing collection of quotes from irate Italian fascisti on James Joyce, and a remarkable appreciation of Victor Hugo, to name only a few. The title essay, on the need to invent enemies from within when lacking ones from without, is probably the highlight, but all of them are worth reading. And the variety is such that if you don't like what you're reading, just hang on for a few pages.

Vibrant and elegant
By U. Hanna
I honestly bought Eleven Madison Park purely for the photography although
the quality of the dish plating and the restaurant itself are in a class of it's own and must be mentioned.

The food styling of Chef Humm is truly a work of art and combined with the superb photography especially lighting of
Farncesco Tonelli makes this cook book beautiful and well worth the price. If you like great food photography with very clean elegant food styling (by Chef Humm) then this has to be a plus in your collection.

Well worth the price - even the kindle version.
By Big Momma
First, the bad news: the kindle version is a freakin' mess.

However, the pictures are there (not well attached to the text, but they are there). The recipes are fantastic. I wish I had bought the hardcover book, but I have way too many cookbooks already!

I will be copying recipes from the kindle to paper or my OneNote for many years to come, I am sure. The instructions for breaking down a rabbit, for example, is worth the price of the book in itself.

The Roads That Built America: The Incredible Story of the U.S. Interstate System, by Dan McNichol

The year 2006 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Interstate System, the most incredible road system in the world. Created by Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose WW II experiences taught him the necessity of a superhighway for military transport and evacuation in wartime, today's Interstate System is what connects our coasts and our borders, our cities and small towns. It's made possible our suburban lifestyle and caused the vast proliferation of businesses from HoJos to Holiday Inns. And if you order something online, most likely it's a truck barreling along an interstate that gets the product to your door. Written by bestselling author Dan McNichol, The Roads that Built America is the fascinating story of the largest engineering project the world has ever known.

Great Read for Highway Enthusiasts
By Adrien
A well written and engaging book. Even if you're familiar with the history of the U.S. Interstate system, you're sure to find interesting tidbits and factoids that will keep you turning the pages. It's a pretty easy read with a lot of great photos. A bunch of sidebar stories helped to break things up a bit and keep it interesting for non-highway geeks.

McNichol is a bit fixated on Boston's Big Dig. While the Big Dig was arguably the most aggressive engineering feat in U.S. insfrastructure history, I think it got a little more attention in this book than it deserved. After all, McNichol did already publish a 235 page tome devoted solely to the Big Dig in 2000.

Also, this book has not been updated since it's original release in 2006. Since that time a lot has happened. I-10 in New Orleans completely failed during hurricane Katrina leaving many refugees stranded on flooded surface streets. The I-35W Mississippi River bridge collapse in Minneapolis in 2007 changed the way bridges are inspected yet again and had a far reaching impact on how U.S. highway funds are allocated for transportation safety.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways project may be complete in principle, but it will never actually be finished. As long as our Interstate Highways live, this book will always have relevance and should have periodic updates and revisions.

Surprise Your Friends with Highway Trivia!
By L. Dunkelman
Clearly this topic will not be of interest to everybody but for those with an interest in history and the often surprising reasons behind the highway system in the U.S., this book is a joy. You will astound your friends with trivia! How many of them know that Maryland contains the most-expensive (per toll mile) interstate in the Country? (How many of your friends might care, is another story).

Altough it seems to be written in high-school textbook prose, the chapters are well organzined, the photos are wonderful and the format lends itself to the coffee table. It can be read in almost any order, a chapter at at time or even a sidebar at a time.

I now have an appreciation for the engineering marvel that Americans take for granted every day.

For kids? For road geeks?
By Lee Edwards
Not as deep as I'd hoped, but lavishly illustrated and better than much of what I've read on the topic. I can't decide if the author backed off his in-depth research a bit to try to be more mass-appeal or if this was perhaps pitched at the middle school/high school audience. No matter; if you're a road geek (you know who you are), you'll probably want this.

He didn't believe in fairy tales

Romantic fantasies and happy endings don't fit Oakes Bartasavich's reality. Of course, neither does his breathtaking attraction to Daphne Lynch. From his prestigious career to his volatile family, there's too much at stake to risk one kiss—let alone one night—with her.

But a snowy Christmas stranded together in Shady Grove, Pennsylvania, shines light on everything he's fighting to deny. Daphne isn't just a beautiful temptation. She's a strong, intelligent, kind woman who deserves a happily-ever-after. One that Oakes isn't sure he can give her…no matter how much he'd like to.

By Books And Spoons
Okay. Well. As I was reading through this story, I hoped for a major twist in the plot, because as it was, it was desperate and heading for a major failure.
Here's the situation - Oakes is the older half brother of Zach, Daphne's older half brother. Daphne and Zach's mother was a nanny for Oakes, when she had an affair with Oakes' dad, and became pregnant with Zach. Right, not the most traditional family ever. When you add to it that Daphne's dad was an alcoholic, who had abused the family, and tried to coerce Daphne to give him money at her high school graduation... Just as dysfunctional as it can be.
So, when a psychology student, Daphne, goes after her long time crush, the lawyer Oakes, acting desperate, silly, making schemes to get them together, and outright begging him to pay attention to her, kiss her, sleep with her, whatever it was that she wanted at the time, it was embarrassing. Because even though Oakes didn't deny, that he was physically attracted to Daphne, and liked to be her friend, he was also very clear he didn't want to, or like to be attracted to her, didn't want to have a relationship with her, and only slept with her to get her out of his system. But even that doesn't stop her, she really still, goes after him, showing up at a party where he is with the woman he choose to be, wants to be with, who, according to him, fits into his life and is attractive, interesting, and all around lovely to be with...
So, I admit, I had really hard time believing he actually would change his mind, or convince me that it was true love, after all that happen before. I'm sorry, but this couple didn't convince me of anything else, except that she was desperate, not very mature, and stubborn to the fault.
There was also another couple in the story, the teenagers from the previous book of the series, Luke and Gracie. The teenage love drama that they lived through seemed more mature at the times, as the grownups, and was a cute addition to the book, even though in no way attached to the main plot.

Yes, this story frustrated and embarrassed me more than anything else, but thankfully the teenagers saved part of the story.. Sorry, I really wish I could have understood and liked the story more than I did

Familys always get in the way
By Kate Vale
This book is part of A Shady Grove series, and focuses on Oakes Bartasavich's attraction to Daphne Lynch. He shouldn't. Although unrelated, she IS related to his half-brother, Zach. Zach hates all the Bartasavich's or at least likes to think so, but he is protective of Daphne and warns her against getting close to Oakes. Oakes, too, is hesitant to act on his attraction. He's the brother who never takes chances, always does the right thing.

But Daphne does take chances, has always been into challenges, the harder the better. And Oakes is a challenge. She's been in love with him since her senior year in high school. How she finally gets Oakes to see her as more than a cute former high schooler informs most of the story, now that she's all grown up and convinced that if she can just get Oakes alone and out of town--as in attending his brother's wedding in Shady Grove--he'll see that he shares deep feelings for her and that they'd be perfect together.

But those wierd family relationships and all the problems they represent are in the way. Or are they?

A sweet story about making time to explore and enjoy all the blessings that are placed in your pathway.
By Isha Coleman
Oakes is too busy trying to please and mediate everyone and everything around him to stop and enjoy life. When nature throws him a curve ball in the form of Daphne Lynch and an unexpected storm he is forced to reexamine what is more important. Winter's Kiss was a sweet story about making time to explore and enjoy all the blessings that are placed in your pathway. I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Great start to IPE theory
By Lehigh History Student
For those interested in this subsection of IPE this is a great introductory textbook. It highlights the various systems under use and the last third focuses on very interesting phenomena that has been occurring recently, privatization. It is very clearly written and you do not need much background in economics to get a lot out of this book.

Economics Student, Rutgers University
By Kindle Customer
This is what every economics textbook should aspire to be: detailed, clear and compelling to read. Perhaps the greatest resource is the notes and extensive suggested readings after each chapter (grouped by topic).
There is however one downside. Since this is such an extraordinary text you may not find too many used editions to purchase. This one's a keeper!
