Gregg Young spent many years developing and implementing traditional forward reasoning problem-solving systems in large and small businesses. His teams experienced both successes and frustration, which inspired him to search for best practices. After studying dozens of processes, he discovered the approach based on Holmes’ reasoning backward strategy. This discovery was a near epiphany for him. Now, his passion is to share this knowledge so that students leave school knowing how to solve problems quickly and completely.

Backwards Thinking Works for Everything

Gregg Young has led problem-solving teams and trained others to solve problems
for over 30 years. In his thought-provoking book he explains in a clear and
compelling way the difference between two opposite strategies for problem
solving: reasoning forwards from cause to effect and reasoning backwards from
effect to cause. He claims that reasoning backwards is four times more effective. The
tools based on backwards reasoning are not well known in industry and scarcely
used in education. He gives numerous practical examples of how specific
problems were solved efficiently in the corporate world. From fixing product
defects to production glitches, he shows how thinking backwards increases odds
for success and saves time and money. The principles are universal, not just
limited to business and manufacturing. The magic of backward thinking is
affected by how issues are posed. For example, I am a scientist and just used
backward thinking to explain why people dream. Dreaming is an effect which
must have causes. I started with a host of wild guesses about why we dream and
pursued many blind alleys. Then I re-phrased the problem in a way that
expedited backward thinking: "Why do I always wake up in a dream?" The number
of possible causes for this effect was quite limited, and I got to the answer

Best Problem Solving Book Ever

This book, while geared toward manufacturing processes will help develop anyone's ability to identify true causes and solve complex problems. The initial concepts presented require some basic problem solving awareness, but are extremely useful in teaching people how to efficiently work through problem solving. The basic concepts once learned by the reader, provide a foundation of simple steps that are easily taught to other problem solvers, which can quickly improve an organizations abilty to solve expensive problems. The latter chapters in the book will prove more complex as the reader should have some experience with designed experiments or more than a basic understanding of statistics, but the first half of the book is a must read for anyone working in an industrial or manufacturing environment.

When I first saw Reasoning Backwards, the sub-title, "Sherlock Holmes' Guide to Effective Problem Solving", intrigued me. I expected a book of exercises designed to help the reader think outside the box. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the book is focused on analytical tools to aid in solving a variety of problems in manufacturing and business.

After an introductory section on strategy and tactics, the author introduces sixteen unique problem solving tools. Each chapter begins with an overview, followed by several real life examples accompanied by charts and drawings, and a summary.

The examples are easily to understand and clarify the principles being introduced. I highly recommend this book.

Pitstick is an excellent researcher with a clear mastery of neo-Scholasticism

While I deeply disagreed with Pitstick's last book on Balthasar, I also found the argument of many of her critics, that "Balthasar must be right because of papal approval", far too weak of a theological defense. Therefore, I welcomed this new book, which promised to answer that criticism ... But this was a disappointing and frustrating read.
Using the same tortured logic she accuses of her subject, the author attempts to turn very clear declarations of support for the person (and work) of Balthasar, by St. JP II, "then" Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, and Cardinal Schonborn, into what she sees as secret and subtle critiques. Her reading of the latter's explanation for the exclusion of Balthasar's theology of Holy Saturday from the Catechism of the Catholic Church is particularly odd.
Pitstick is an excellent researcher with a clear mastery of neo-Scholasticism. At times, she sounds like Garrigou-Lagrange ... but like that great Dominican, one senses an absolute unwillingness (inability) to dialogue with the theology of the Ressourcement and, by default, 75-100 years of crucial Catholic thought.

Lyra Pitstick's outstanding scholarship yields a fascinating study that is congruent with statements on Christian revelation by the Magisterium.

If you want celebrity chef - pick one of Lidia's other books. This is the real deal!

Not your "mainstream" celebrity chef cookbook. NO PHOTOS - what a travesty - NOT. If you want commercial Lidia, pick one of her many other books. If you want to experience the passion that has clearly brought her to where she is today - pick this master class in Italian cooking. My husband was born in Naples, he ordered this book, and we both LOVE it! It is a compendium of recipes that clearly speak from the heart. As another reviewer has said think "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", not shiny pages and glossy pics. We will begin working our way through this lovely book, moving the old school ribbon bookmark as we go, and enjoy every minute of it!

Italian cooking from A to Z

This is a heavy duty immersion into the fine art of Italian Cooking. If you really want to get the most out of it, you need to read it first. Most of the time when I get a new cookbook, I just hunt through it for this or that recipe and slowly add to the list from there. You can do that with this cookbook but if you do you will not ever see what is really there for you. I say, read first and cook later.

Would be a good choice but I prefer Marcella Hazen'"Essentials of Italian Cooking"

For those comfortable with cookbooks without photos or diagrams (I am) this book is thorough and the recipes are well presented. Marcella Hazen's are also and there is actaully more detail on technique with line drawing diagrams. Marcella's directions are a bit more expanded and almost conversational, as if she is talking to you. I just do not see that "Lydia'" offers sufficiently more to motivate me to purchase it. I checked it out from the library. My "Marcella's is actually falling apart after 15 years of use and if anything I would replace it. Thosenwho purchasd "Lydia's" will have a wonderful book. Both her's and Marcella's are worth while.

This book covers a broad topic, and is therefore not extremely thorough. It still gives a good bit of useful text for its small size. Generally speaking the plates are good, but they have nothing on Angus McBride. The book covers the following topics, usually devoting one or several pages to each:

The Armies of Outremer (Christian territory centered on Jerusalem)

The Military Orders (like the Templars and Hospitallers, and some lesser known groups)

The Iberian Armies (El Cid and the Reconquista covers this topic in much greater detail)

Byzantine Armies (extremely brief)

Abbasid Armies (Armies of the Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad)

Moorish Armies (the Armies of Islamic Spain)

Seljuk Armies (Turkish warriors during the Crusades)

Fatimid Armies (Egyptian Muslim forces)

Ayyubid Armies (those of Salah al-Din and the Battle of Hattin)

Mamluk Armies (Turkish slave mercenaries at the end of the Crusading period)

Like most of the books in this series, the information in them is very basic and does not go into very deep detail. Good as an introduction though. Also has excellent color pictures that show you how the knights dressed. A quick and easy read.

This book is not a traditional "textbook" and may have disappointed some reviewers. The book is a collection of chapters written by different experts that each focus on a field or sub-discipline of Biomaterials.

The first ~1/3 of the book can be used for a traditional Biomaterials course with the remaining chapters used for parts of follow-on electives or as starting points for class research projects.

About the Author
Monica Ramirez Basco, PhD, a clinical psychologist, is Associate Director for Science Policy, Planning, and Analysis at the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health. She served as Assistant Director for Neuroscience, Mental Health, and Broadening Participation at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy from 2014 to 2015. Dr. Basco is an internationally recognized expert in cognitive-behavioral therapy and a founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. She was formerly on the faculty of the University of Texas at Arlington, where she was awarded the University of Texas Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award.

Fantastic workbook for mood disorders-

A Great book to help a person that struggles with mood disorders. I had the previous edition but the newer edition is even better. The workbook is well worth the money. It is great to work thur the workbook with a family, friend or doctor. The workbook has helped me identify my characteristic when I am going into manic or depression. I am still learning what to do to stop going into manic or depression. I am only 1/2 way thur the book tho.
The book is written in easy to read and understand terms. You can skip chapters that you feel you don't need. The worksheets to write on can be printed off a website if you don't want to use the ones in the book. Or if you go back and read the book later you can have clean new worksheets to use. The workbook is great for the friend and family member trying to understand about what their loved one is going thur with a mood disorder. Their loved one may not be ready to work thur the workbook but it does give insight for the friends and family member.

Good for when you're first diagnosed.

I was hoping for a book that would teach me something. This book did not teach me anything the NIMH taught me with their free packet online. I do have a degree in psychology though, so it could help people who've been recently diagnosed or who are really struggling. Four stars for its information being accurate.
