Useful and fun!

I gave this book to my sister who has two little kids who are a handful to manage on a day by day/hour by hour basis. She read the book to the kids and it really helped her to explain to them how important it is to have structure and self-control and values...but this wouldn't have worked if the story weren't so much fun--it is actually totally imaginative and creative, and the illustrations are really funny. My sister is a school psychologist and thinks this book would be terrific for all parents.

Loved it!

This story was a fun read. I really enjoyed it and the characters! Caitlyn and Sterling were great and very well written. Caitlyn needs a job to pay off her mom's medical bills. Sterling needs a personal assistant to help him out because he has failing eye sight. They are both drawn to each other but because of the situation they try denying it and avoiding it...it doesn't work very well lol. Sterling is not really a people person but Caitlyn does stand up for herself when needed. I liked the characters byplay with each other. It keeps you engaged and wanting more the whole time.
The story flows really well and has a very steady pace. It's not a mystery but it's not predictable either. You will want to know how Caitlyn and Sterling will get over being employer and employee and dealing with his failing eyesight and whether or not he will have the surgery. The sex is explicit but does not happen very often though the sexual tension is there pretty much the entire time.

Fabulously sexy romance, wonderful afternoon escape

Caitlyn is struggling to make ends meet so when the opportunity to become a personal assistant is offered to her, she jumps at the chance. This may be her best option to dig out of her financial predicament. What she doesn't expect is to be captivated by Sterling even with all his hardnosed, demanding ways. Now she just has to keep her hands off her boss. Sterling is struggling to find a new normal after an accident damages his eyes. As he works to cope with deteriorating eyesight, he needs a personal assistant even more to help keep everything running smoothly. He's impressed with Caitlyn's can-do attitude so he hires her on the spot. He never expects that she would kick his libido into overdrive. I enjoyed the camaraderie that Caitlyn and Sterling develop. It's a ton of fun as they struggle to stay away from each other. I was surprised by the twist and loved how this story challenged them both as they reached for their HEA.

should have read this right when I bought it - it's so good

I read a lot and I've constantly got books sitting in my Kindle waiting for my attention. (The world would end if I ran out of books.) I'll usually read an entire book before starting another one so I can truly enjoy the characters. I bought Up Close and Personal several months ago and it's been sitting there waiting for me. I just finished it and I'm wondering why I let it sit there so long. The characters are fully developed and smart. No dumb people needing it spelled out for them. They have the brains to figure things out, which is a refreshing change. Their relationship feels honest and believable as do their emotions. There's sex but that's not really what drives the story. This is about connection and caring enough about someone else to do what's best for them, even if it's the last thing you want to do. I loved it!

This book is a sexy, tantalizing gem. I felt Ms. Murdock wanted to go places she didn't quite know how to get to, but got to them anyway. Martin Lynch-Gibbon, the book's main character, is both villain and victim. The book twists and turns. There is Georgie, Martin's beautiful but woeful mistress, his wife Antonia, her lover, Palmer, Martin's brother Alexander and perhaps the book's strangest and most intriguing character, Honor Klein. I had seen the movie, "Iris," which is about Murdoch' descent into Alzheimer's disease, but I had no idea what a wonderful writer she was and is.

He has a mistress named Georgie and is quite content with his life. Unfortunately, his wife drops a bombshell. She wants to leave him for her psychotherapist, a man Martin himself introduced her to! He tries to dissuade her by being very civilized about the whole thing. He says all right have an affair but let's forget all this nonsense about divorce. However, Antonia is adament. Martin finds to his dismay that he is to be part of a threesome (not sexual) between Antonio, Palmer and himself. He becomes angry at himself for allowing his emasculazation but rather than take it out on his tormenters, he "acts out" with the enigmatic Honor Klein, Palmer's half-sister. Nothing in this book is what you would imagine. Put aside all preconceptions and simply read it, not just for the story, which seems to move sideways rather than forward but for the character studies and be prepared - nothing is what you think. Iris Murdoch was a great novelist and her irony reminds me a bit of Jane Austin's, although it is of a different kind. While Austin's irony has more to do with words than situations, Murdoch's is more ironic in the situations she creates than the words she uses although her words are marvelous. The dialogues (both internal and external) the characters use are sly and witty. After Pride and Prejudice, I would have to say that this is my favorite book.

A sharp punch in the face

This is a biting little book, an intelligent mockery of how the most "civilized" level of society maintains manners as these characters savage each other's marriages and lives.

Murdoch specializes in the misguided narrator whom the reader enjoys even as we realize what a snake he is. Martin at the book's opening is calmly discussing his rich wife with his young girlfriend. She's a dependable young woman who let him off the hook when she got pregnant. In other words, Martin deserves whatever he's going to get, but we actually feel badly for him as he's led through a maze of hilarious situations, a revelation or a comeuppance around each corner.

I found the book to be a very swift read, but I wasn't that fond of the opening chapter, in which so many key players are introduced in dialog. It feels stagey, but I have to admit that this fits with the bedroom farce tone of the book. I also found Martin's characterization of Honor as so utterly alien because she looks Jewish to be jarring and grating. I know it was a strike against Martin, part of what made him contemptible, but he was so seductively likable that it was jarring to my modern sensibilities. I persevered and he got his.

It's hilarious and neatly done, and through it all, Murdoch takes a break from the farcical situations and treats us to prose poems on the atmosphere that surrounds her characters. Between the fog, the sun, the reflections and proximity to windows, there's a paper about light, obscurity and truth in this book begging to be written. But I'm out of school.

Susan Frybort is an American-born poet with a deep fascination for life and the human experience. Writing since she was a child, her poems are a tapestry of wisdom and compassion that soften the heart's edges, calling us home. Her first book- the popular poetry collection 'Hope is a Traveler'- was first published in 2015 to rave reviews. Susan is also a skilled tailor, whose interests include astronomy and nature exploration. She is also a proud mother to her daughter, Lindsay. She lives in Canada with her husband, author Jeff Brown.
