There was once a monkey who didn't believe in crocodiles - but that didn't make any difference when he met one in the middle of the night on the banks of the Great River. There was another monkey who tried to pull himself out of a bog by his whiskers; all that was left of him was two small bubbles on top of the mud. And as for the snake who thought he could steal the egg of Kuku the hen without being found out - well, he couldn't say that his wife hadn't warned him in plenty of time!

Short Animal Stories Gently Promote Modern Christian Values
By Paul Tutherow
The characters in these books have strong personalities that are consistent as they recur throughout the series of short stories. Mischievous monkeys are usually getting in trouble and often suffer because of their foolishness. Each of the stories also highlight a strong moral which will help children understand biblical principles and how they can be applied to our everyday lives in our modern society. The stories are just the right length for reading in about 20 minutes and characterizing the voices of each of the animals is fun.

Too scary for my 8 year old
By Amazon Customer
We had one of the orginal Jungle Doctor books, and my kiddo loved it. We are always looking for good pure books for her to read. I got her this for Christmas but she disliked it soo much. It had some really scary stories in it and she was up crying because she couldn't get them out of her head. Needless to say I was surprised and sad that I bought it for her. I would stick with the orginal Jungle Doctor books.

EXCELLENT BOOK!
By Nathaniel
I had an old copy from when I was little (and it was an old book then), but it has basically come apart at the binding. This book covers all the basics of Christianity in one of the most easy-to-understand ways I've ever run across. The only thing I didn't care for is the newer version of this book (I've bought several to give to friends) swaps out one of the older stories. If possible, I'd suggest looking for one of the older print ones in the used section. Either way though, this is still an absolutely wonderful book, presenting the gospel in parable form, making it clear and easy to understand. I love it.

Great Help for Laypeople and Designers Who Work With Information Visualizations
By W. Stotler
Looking to compose an informational dashboard or an annual corporate report that is snap-easy to understand for its users? This book will be of great help. I didn't buy this one through Amazon, so I'm not a verified purchaser, but I do want to comment that this book (along with The Wall Street Journal Guide to Information Graphics: The Dos and Don'ts of Presenting Data, Facts, and Figures) is really a "must-have" for designers (or laypeople) working with informational visualization: web, print, and (especially) Excel and Powerpoint presentations. Mollerup lays out in simple, straightforward detail how to handle informational visualizations from data charts through to maps. The key to Mollerup's approach is the simple, straightforward, no-nonsense presentation of the content, which helps make the point that clear thoughts and ideas when simply expressed are quickly understood. Five stars.

Smack: Heroin and the American City (Politics and Culture in Modern America), by Eric C. Schneider

Why do the vast majority of heroin users live in cities? In his provocative history of heroin in the United States, Eric C. Schneider explains what is distinctively urban about this undisputed king of underworld drugs.

During the twentieth century, New York City was the nation's heroin capital—over half of all known addicts lived there, and underworld bosses like Vito Genovese, Nicky Barnes, and Frank Lucas used their international networks to import and distribute the drug to cities throughout the country, generating vast sums of capital in return. Schneider uncovers how New York, as the principal distribution hub, organized the global trade in heroin and sustained the subcultures that supported its use.

Through interviews with former junkies and clinic workers and in-depth archival research, Schneider also chronicles the dramatically shifting demographic profile of heroin users. Originally popular among working-class whites in the 1920s, heroin became associated with jazz musicians and Beat writers in the 1940s. Musician Red Rodney called heroin the trademark of the bebop generation. "It was the thing that gave us membership in a unique club," he proclaimed. Smack takes readers through the typical haunts of heroin users—52nd Street jazz clubs, Times Square cafeterias, Chicago's South Side street corners—to explain how young people were initiated into the drug culture.

Smack recounts the explosion of heroin use among middle-class young people in the 1960s and 1970s. It became the drug of choice among a wide swath of youth, from hippies in Haight-Ashbury and soldiers in Vietnam to punks on the Lower East Side. Panics over the drug led to the passage of increasingly severe legislation that entrapped heroin users in the criminal justice system without addressing the issues that led to its use in the first place. The book ends with a meditation on the evolution of the war on drugs and addresses why efforts to solve the drug problem must go beyond eliminating supply.

From Publishers Weekly
Schneider's absorbing history of heroin's proliferation in America draws a parallel between the evolution and decline of American cities and the rise of heroin use. Rather than treating the city as a "backdrop," Schneider interprets cities as "the organizers of the world opium market," and meticulously traces heroin's ascendancy from early 20th century opium dens to the 1920s jazz milieu and into the suburbs of the late 20th century suburbs when heroin finally attracted the attention of mainstream media. He identifies cities, most notably New York, as hubs of heroin distribution, where residents often futilely attempted to save their neighborhoods from further loss of capital investment and migration to the suburbs. But as people migrated, so did the drug, and Schneider expertly shows that the fusion of the counterculture and increasing urban blight helped drive heroin into white middle class neighborhoods. Interviews with former addicts and social workers resonate amid Schneider's efficient research. At the same time he remains true to his unsentimental analysis of heroin's presence in American society, revealing the extent to which American cities are financially and socially weakened hosts to a parasitic element.

Review

"Deeply researched and briskly written, with rare photographs and biographical vignettes to keep the narrative moving along, Smack . . . is a triumph of imaginative historical scholarship, though a bittersweet one, written by someone in obvious mourning for the drug-accelerated decline of America's great cities."—Addiction

"A thoughtful, measured, and eminently readable study of that illuminating place where urban and medical history meet the study of media and policymaking. Schneider's book will not only be relevant to academics, but to any general reader concerned with the challenging world of crime and social policy. The author's tone of lucid clarity is particularly welcome in an area marked by polemic and predictable advocacy."—Charles Rosenberg, The Care of Strangers: The Rise of America's Hospital System

"Since the end of World War II, American cities have been home to illicit drug markets where heroin has been among the most widely-sold products. Smack is Eric Schneider's masterful explanation of how heroin entered America's cities, who used it, what happened as a result and how obtuse public policy and naked corruption not only failed to check its distribution but sometimes even contributed to its spread. Schneider exposes the deep misconceptions underlying the nation's futile war on drugs and offers sane and realistic alternatives that, historic experience suggests, could work, if only public authorities have the courage and will."—Michael Katz, The Price of Citizenship: Redefining the American Welfare State

"A sympathetic, engaging, and highly readable antidote to the war-ondrugs-style morality tale. At times the book reads like the award-winning and controversial HBO television series The Wire. . . . Schneider draws his audience into a colorful narrative complete with larger-than-life characters, heart-tugging tragedies, and triumphant victories that complicate a more simplistic rendering of what constitutes right and wrong, legal and illegal, or mainstream and black market. He effectively humanizes the issue with testimony from users, dealers, traffickers, police, politicians, and educators to show how all parties in this conflict have struggled to bring justice and security to their communities."—American Historical Review

"Schneider has produced that rarest of academic commodities—a page-turner. The book is exceedingly well written, and its fascinating research and analysis are sure to make it a central text in the field."—Journal of American History

"Schneider's absorbing history of heroin's proliferation in America draws a parallel between the evolution and decline of American cities and the rise of heroin use. Rather than treating the city as a "backdrop," Schneider interprets cities as 'the organizers of the world opium market,' and meticulously traces heroin's ascendancy from early 20th century opium dens to the 1920s jazz milieu and into the suburbs of the late 20th century when heroin finally attracted the attention of the mainstream media."—Publisher's Weekly

Heroin and the city
By Mark J. Stern
Schneider's book combines a wealth of insights into the history of drug use with a thoughtful analysis of its uniquely "urban" quality. I recommend this book for anyone interested in 20th (or 21st) century urban history.

"Whitaker, Zoul, and Casas offer readers practical suggestions for becoming a connected professional in today's educational landscape. "Todd, Jeff, and Jimmy share an insight on more than being a "connected" educator, but on learning and making a difference for the reader and others. Through specific examples, practical ideas, and humor, this book will encourage educators who are already connected to continue their work and inspire those who are curious about becoming a connected educator, but don't know where to start. This will become a major book in my library and one that I will gift to new teachers!"

--Dwight Carter, Principal, New Albany High School, 2013 NASSP Digital Principal of the Year, and 2014 Bammy Secondary Principal of the Year Award winner

I happened to stumble across this book through amazon's recommendations, and it was a very pleasant surprise. It had an immediate impact on how I viewed the field. It provided examples that resulted in me being more involved on twitter, google communities, and various other personal learning networks. I've come across resources that I used in my instruction, and I likely would not have found if it had not been for this book.

Cluster computers provide a low-cost alternative to multiprocessor systems for many applications. Building a cluster computer is within the reach of any computer user with solid C programming skills and a knowledge of operating systems, hardware, and networking. This book leads you through the design and assembly of such a system, and shows you how to mearsure and tune its overall performance.

A cluster computer is a multicomputer, a network of node computers running distributed software that makes them work together as a team. Distributed software turns a collection of networked computers into a distributed system. It presents the user with a single-system image and gives the system its personality. Software can turn a network of computers into a transaction processor, a supercomputer, or even a novel design of your own.

Some of the techniques used in this book's distributed algorithms might be new to many readers, so several of the chapters are dedicated to such topics. You will learn about the hardware needed to network several PCs, the operating system files that need to be changed to support that network, and the multitasking and the interprocess communications skills needed to put the network to good use.

Finally, there is a simple distributed transaction processing application in the book. Readers can experiment with it, customize it, or use it as a basis for something completely different.

From the Back Cover

Amazon.com Review
Masters swimmer and acclaimed coach Terry Laughlin has taught thousands to swim more efficiently in the workshops he has given across the United States. In his book Laughlin details simple, step-by-step drills emphasizing the importance of technique and an innovative workout regimen.

Review
Eddie Reese 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004 United States Olympic Coach and Head Coach, University of Texas (six-time NCAA champions) The most valuable service a good coach provides is to sharpen your technique, not make you work harder. Terry Laughlin has done an outstanding job of simplifying that complex job, providing practical tools that will work for any coach or teacher.

David Marsh 1996, 2000, and 2004 United States Olympic Coach and Head Coach, Auburn University (2003 NCAA Men's and Women's champions) Total Immersion can help anyone learn to be a better swimmer, regardless of ability. Terry Laughlin makes an improved stroke simple for the novice, yet I've seen his methods work for elite swimmers, too.

About the Author
Terry Laughlin was a competitive swimmer in college and went on to coach college swim teams for 20 years. He is now the director of Total Immersion Adult Swim Camps and Clubs, which are held all over the world.

Better Technique = Better Swimming
By B. Smith
I'm not a big swimmer, but I heard so much about this book that I had to check it out- and I'm glad I did. This book will save a lot of people who are trying to learn to swim better a lot of time. Here's why:

-the book concentrates on swimming technique, correct position, and how you're suppose to feel in the water
-the book gives you drills to reinforce the most efficient way to swim
-the book is very scientific and the info is based on hydrodynamics

The book covers a lot of ground, but the authors writing style makes is go by quickly (at least it did for me). The pictures were good and I thought the explanations of the techniques and the "why" behind them was very understandable. Not sure about the rotator cuff routine in Chapter 16 though- it's kinda long and I'm not sure if some of the exercises like the reverse biceps curl is really necessary (rec. Bulletproof Your Shoulder for swimmers who have shoulder issues).

In conclusion, I found the book very enlightening and recommend it to anyone (young OR old) who wants to learn how to swim more efficiently by learning the correct swimming techniques. The author obviously loves swimming and has brought all his years of experience and research into one handy resource.

Great swim method, boring, inefficient book
By Soloviajero
Please understand, I'm rating the book here, not the swimming method. Understand also that I'm old, a senior who led an active outdoor life until my knees gave out, and I washed up into the backwater of swimming and kayaking, all that remains for the older athlete when your legs give out. There are a lot of similarities between TI swimming and kayaking, as both are somewhat concerned with a principle of that naval architects call "hull speed." Conceptually, the idea of hull speed has been known since ancient times, although modern mathematical formulae can define it precisely. It's simple: All else being equal, long slender ships go faster than shorter, wider ones. If you want to go faster with the same human propulsion engine, you either make your boat longer or you make the beam (the width) narrower. In TI swimming, you increase speed and glide by shaping your body into a longer hull by keeping one arm (alternatingly) extended, and you reduce your beam (width) in the water by swimming on your side. You use body torsioning for propulsion as well as arm motion, and you don't kick a lot because kicking disturbs the smooth flow of water around the body hull. Essentially, in TI swimming, you make your body into a sleek kayak hull, and by smoothly separating the water column in front of you, and smoothly bringing it back together again behind you, you get more "slippery" and thus achieve higher hull speed. And you don't splash or cause water turbulence that slows you down.

I first heard of TI swimming from an Australisn woman in a hostel in British Columbia. She took 20 minutes to describe it to me, and it improved my swimming efficiency immensely the same day. Then I bought the Kindle edition of the TI instruction book, and my progress stalled immediately. Words, words, words! Notwithstanding what other reviewers have said, the book is hortatory to excess in wanting to convert those already converted, it lacks photographs, drawings and other illustrations to "show" you visually what's going on. It relies on the minutiae of "coach talk" (although professing to do the opposite!) for every description, and speaks excessively of "training" and "drills," which may appeal to a certain class of competitive athlete interested in winning races, but leaves me dead on arrival.

Without illustrations, the book is sheer drudgery to read. I return to it now and again as ritual penance for perceived wrongdoing, and each time I return to it, I find myself bored to death and wanting to review it on Amazon to warn others like me that the method is good, but the writing of the book is just plain bad. A competitive swimmer or triathlete would understandably disagree because coaching, training, drills and dedication may be music to his ears. I've had the book a year now, and haven't been able to finish it. I watched every TI video on YouTube and even bought one of the TI videos on "breathing" (worthless, same criticism as of the book) and just by watching the YouTube videos, I've been able to master some of the techniques. I like the method; it's good, but I understand it simply as good naval architecture designed to increase hull speed. It works. It's graceful and quiet. But TI needs to hire a professional technical writer to rewrite a version with illustrations for the common man who isn't a competitive swimmer or triathlete, and who isn't interested in personal bests or races, a version for somebody who just wants to learn from good pictures and illustrations with well-designed, descriptive captions, and wants to swim effortlessly and gracefully in a noncompetitive world of his own.

Great Instructional Text That's Most Effective When Paired With His "Freestyle Made Easy" DVD
By Robert I. Hedges
"Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster, and Easier" is an excellent guide to freestyle swimming. Terry Laughlin is obviously a very experienced swimmer and coach, and is generally good at explaining things. I was a total nonswimmer until last year, and now would say I am a beginning swimmer. I have had excellent instruction that uses similar techniques to those found here, though some of the TI-like methodology is used for somewhat more advanced students at my school. The point is that I found this book helpful even as a neophyte in the water, though I think the people who will profit most from it will be people who can already swim adequately but want to improve, although Laughlin stresses that anyone from beginners through competitive athletes can benefit. I like that the book clearly explains the objectives, e.g. reducing drag, "swimming tall," and the importance of balancing in the water and swimming on your side (among many others.) As a novice the thing that has helped me most is the concept of keeping one hand in the front quadrant at all times; that along with the mantra of "enter, extend, pause, pull" really opened my eyes to drastically more efficient arm movement.

As for dissatisfaction with the text, I would say that the introduction to the Total Immersion (TI) program is far longer than it needs to be, and many chapters have far more verbose explanations than are necessary or desirable (I particularly found much of chapter five trying and somewhat off-putting.) Every time I found something vaguely annoying, though, Laughlin redeemed himself with an insight that seemed tailor made for me. We're all different, but I was especially grateful for the discussion of inflexible ankles in adult-onset swimmers (p. 117) and "Special Help for 'Sinkers'" (p. 113,) my two biggest challenges in the pool. In short, while the text is sometimes excessively lengthy, if you can concentrate on the truly important passages the book can be exceptionally helpful.

What kept this book from being a true five star effort is the lack of photographs. Swimming is a very challenging thing to write about instructionally. Merely describing body positions and movements three dimensionally is taxing at best and impossible at worst, and while he tries, describing sensations is extremely subjective and idiosyncratic. This is why photographs taken in series emphasizing key points are vital, and this book has none. It has a very few rudimentary line drawings of a person in the water, but no sequential analysis of any significance (though there are a couple of illustrations featuring different parts of a stroke.) This is wholly insufficient in a book on any anatomically complex athletic endeavor. I, fortunately, purchased the TI DVD "Freestyle Made Easy," and watched it prior to reading this book. I think that as a beginning swimmer if I had read the book without first watching the DVD I would have gotten very little out of it, and would have probably given the book a lower rating. As it is I see the book as an indispensable companion for the DVD, and really think they should be sold as a set, the alternative being to profusely illustrate a new edition of the book with numerous photographs. The DVD is relatively expensive, and if you have some swimming experience the book will have more value on its own than it does for beginners like me, but in all cases the book and DVD are mutually reinforcing, and are of much greater help when used together. If you have to choose between the book and the DVD for budgetary reasons, there's no doubt in my mind that the DVD is the way to go.

Despite my critiques, I do like "Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster, and Easier," and found it quite helpful in my progress as a swimmer. While I suspect it's best for intermediate swimmers, it answers many questions about swimming and reveals numerous beneficial techniques for swimmers of all levels. If you want to be a better freestyle swimmer, this book can help you.

The Girl Next Door: A Novel, by Ruth Rendell

INCLUDES AN EXCERPT OF RENDELL’S FINAL NOVEL, DARK CORNERS

From crime legend Ruth Rendell, a psychologically intriguing novel about an old murder that sends shockwaves across a group of astonishingly carnal and appetiteful elderly friends: “Refined, probing, and intelligent…never less than a pleasure” (USA TODAY).

In the waning months of the second World War, a group of children discover a tunnel in their neighborhood outside London. For that summer of 1944, the subterranean space becomes their “secret garden,” where the friends play games, tell their fortunes, and perform for each other.

Six decades later, construction workers make a grisly discovery beneath a house on the same land: a tin box containing two skeletal hands, one male and one female. As the hands make national news, the friends come together once again, to recall their long ago days for a detective. Then the police investigation sputters, and the threads holding their friendship together begin to unravel. Is the truth buried amid the tangled relationships of these aging men and women and their memories? Will it emerge before it’s too late?

Stephen King says, “no one surpasses Ruth Rendell when it comes to stories of obsession, instability, and malignant coincidence.” In The Girl Next Door—“yet another gem” (The Washington Post)—Rendell brilliantly shows that the choices people make, and the emotions behind them, remain as potent in late life as they were in youth. “Rendell’s wit, always mordant, has never been sharper than when she skewers patronizing assumptions about the elderly” (Chicago Tribune).

Review
“Using her customary spare yet decorous style and measured pace, Rendell, now in her 80s, beautifully and carefully individualizes each member of her ensemble cast, at the same time creating not a grim reminder of mortality but a picture of moribund lives renewed. A special book by a special writer.” (Booklist (starred review))

“[Rendell] creates another riveting story with her sharp characterizations and keen sense of irony that will keep readers engaged from start to finish. Fans of psychological suspense, along with Rendell’s loyal following, will love this complex story.” (Library Journal (starred review))

"Ruth Rendell's fiction clusters at such a high level that the best judgment I can render about The Girl Next Door is this: It's a good Rendell, and that makes it very good indeed." (Dennis Drabelle, Washington Post)

“Only recently has it been common for novelists to work into their late 70s and beyond — not merely producing new work but writing at a very high level. A case in point is Ruth Rendell, whose new novel, The Girl Next Door, just appeared. Rendell is 84…Like her contemporary P.D. James, she is one of the finest writers of her time… her wit, always mordant, has never been sharper than when she skewers patronizing assumptions about the ‘elderly.’”

 (John Wilson, Chicago Tribune)

“[Rendell] is one of the most literate living writers of fiction…Her witty style and her endless trove of subtle references to fellow writers (living and dead) are matched by a timeliness that always takes on contemporary social issues along with the invented mystery that propels her plot into action. Part of the miracle is that with more than 60 books to her credit over a half-century career, Ms. Rendell never descends into mere formula. The Girl Next Door is no exception.” (Robert Croan, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

“[Rendell] has always been at her heart-stopping best when she pushes the reader out of the comfort zone with her stand-alone psychological thrillers…The Girl Next Door is vintage Rendell and a perfect celebration of her half-century…This novel reminded me of the singularity of Ruth Rendell’s talent, her effortless mastery of language and her uncanny genius for mapping a criminal mind.” (Kate Saunders, The Times (U.K.))

“This book is extraordinarily courageous, a demonstration that fiction can take us where reportage dares not go.” (The Independent (U.K.))

“A must read… not your typical crime story, but it is a typical Rendell book — cunningly observed, elegantly written.” (Ed Siegel, WBUR)

The Girl Next Door
By Damaskcat
The reader knows who has committed the murder from the start of this well written crime novel so it isn't a traditional 'who done it' and there is very little input from the police investigating the crime at a later date. The book primarily concerns a group of friends who were children at the time of the murder - near the end of World War II - and how the discovery of two severed hands in a biscuit tin sixty years later affects them.

It is fairly obvious who one of the hands belongs to but the reader must wait until almost the end of the book to find out who is the other victim. I thought the characters were well developed and the author paints a vivid picture of their lives as adults. I thought it was interesting how the dynamics between the group changed and developed as the discovery of the hands leads to them talking about what happened that Summer when the murders probably took place.

If you're looking for a conventional crime novel then this may not be for you but if you're looking for an excellent novel about how people change - and don't change - during their lifetime then this may be of interest to you. Whether or not you enjoy crime novels this is worth reading for its development of character and the way small events can have huge repercussions at the time as well as many years later. I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from NetGalley.

The Girl Next Door
By S Riaz
This novel, more literary than traditional crime fiction, veers between the present and the past. During the Second World War a group of children in Loughton, Essex, played together in some underground tunnels they found and renamed ‘the qanats.’ Nobody really remembers why, but time has passed and the group of children have grown up, grown old and, mostly, dispersed. However, the discovery of a pair of severed hands, buried in a biscuit tin so long ago, now brings many of those who played there so long ago back together again. Daphne Jones, three times married and still glamorous, Michael Winwood, whose father chased them from the tunnels and Lewis Newman, both now widowed, childhood sweethearts Alan Norris and Rosemary Wharton and the Batchelors – of whom George, Stanley and Norman are still alive.

The police are asked to investigate the crime – of which the reader is already aware of both victims and murderer . However, this book is more about the impact of the discovery and of unearthing old memories on those involved. In many ways this is a poignant and touching read – of both how age limits and frees us. It reunites old lovers, wreaks huge changes and forces people to confront their loss and childhood traumas. Ruth Rendell manages to make all the characters sympathetic, so you really care about what happens to them. Despite the length of time between the crime and the investigation, making even the police involved cynical about finding a conclusion, there is little doubt that confronting what happened at that time will help solve unanswered questions, make some characters doubt the way they are living their lives and, in some cases, make enormous changes. I really enjoyed this novel, even though it was not a traditional ‘whodunnit’ and it made me question why I have not read more of Ruth Rendell’s novels. Luckily, that is something I can, and do, intend to rectify. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publishers, via NetGalley, for review.

Childhood playmates reunite after 70 years to solve murder
By Kirsten
This is closer to a novel of manners than a murder mystery, as a group of childhood friends are reunited in their 70s when a box containing two skeleton hands is found in their old play area. An early scene in the book reminded me of The Famous Five, with the older people sitting around being interviewed by a policeman about what they had noticed while playing all those years ago.
While the reader already knows the identity of the victims and the murderer, the friends have no idea... they are each more preoccupied by the impact of their reunion. Alan Norris starts daydreaming about his first love, Daphne, who is dazzling and glamorous in contrast to his dull and predictable wife Rosemary; Michael is steeling himself to meet his 99-year old father, who abandoned him as a child. The other couples are facing the inevitable health decline of old age, but one of the beautiful aspects of this book is that all the characters are still learning and growing and participating actively in life. None of them are defined by their age, even though their adult children and grandchildren are quick to dismiss any unpredictable behaviour as "Alzheimers".
The strongest and most engaging thread in the story is the "love triangle" between Rosemary, Alan and Daphne. This story makes a few surprising twists and turns, ending with a satisfying and believable conclusion. While I always enjoy Rendell's books, The Girl Next Door has a fresh and original style, and the intriguing, deceptively simple plot is handled with skill.
