Weak tea...

I just picked it up in a grab bag discount rack for three bucks. A waste of three bucks. When I remember John Ostrander's gorgeous western graphic novels I hang my head and cry over the long running gag with very little plot and/or weight. Very little action, cheap gags, and running banter. The euphemisms wore very thin. The art is okay - but there really wasn't much paintworthy in the script. It kind of felt like I was reading a Mad magazine send-up of the Rawhide Kid.

All in all I'd have to call this the comic book equivalent of a cup of weak tea, served cold.

Marvel Comics made a lot of noise about giving The Rawhide Kid his own miniseries back in 2003, but not because the long-forgotten cowboy was returning to comics: The Rawhide Kid was returning as a homosexual character with his own book, which was a first for a relatively controversial segment of comic characters. With this as a selling point, it might be easy to write off the book as a gimmicky attempt to earn mainstream media attention, but it's actually a very entertaining comic, all minor LGBT themes aside.

The Rawhide Kid needs to save the famous (and not-so-famous) Earps from a Mexican prison before they're killed, and subsequently assembles some famous names to get the job done: Annie Oakley, Doc Holliday, Billy the Kid, as well as a few Marvel-specific characters. Unfortunately, Ron Zimmerman's version of the pseudo-Old West isn't populated by hard-working, forward-thinking examples of sterling masculinity. Instead, a majority of the populace is humorously stupid and violent, a refreshing and amusing alternative to the more popular visions of the Old West. In this world, The Kid is something of a late-1800s Batman, having trained in all of the hand-to-hand combat methods of the day, except with a pronounced proclivity for guns and handsome men.

Marvel Comics geeks will love The Sensational Seven's references to modern Marvel continuity, with an exceptional one-panel appearance of Ghost Rider, and Two-Gun Kid recalling his time-travel adventures with The Avengers, establishing this as an in-canon story. There's also the very comic book-y appearance of seven villains who briefly serve as the "negative" counterparts of the seven assembled heroes, which everyone seems to be very aware of as a kind of fantasy narrative trope, making it even more enjoyable. At least until all seven bad guys are summarily killed without any kind of struggle.

The Rawhide Kid is never in any danger and never seems to get a speck of dirt or blood on his impeccably cleaned cowboy digs, and that's part of his appeal. It's not a story that you read because of the impending danger or adventure, because it doesn't exist in the flawlessly heroic world of The Kid, but it is something you read for amusement. Howard Chakyin's art is never completely serious, even though it's excellently dynamic and tells a fun, goofy story with a lot of humor and animation.

The collection is concluded with an original Two-Gun Kid comic from 1967, offering perspective on some of the earlier appearances of these characters.

There's a lot of blood and Old West violence, as well as themes of familial abuse, mild profanity, and plenty of innuendo as The Kid references his romantic preferences, and the women who love him reference theirs, but The Rawhide Kid's sexual preferences are really just a footnote in a larger tale of adventure. The references that are made aren't crass so much as predicate on inoffensive stereotypes of fastidiousness. Ultimately, it's a fun read for an older, slightly more open-minded audience.

Funny text, drawings are not great

This follow-on comic maintains the same kind of prissy humor found in the first Rawhide Kid comic. But Somehow, Chaykin's artwork fails to fully convey the expected humor here. All the facial expressions look alike and if not for the different costumes, I can't tell The Rawhide Kid, from Kid Colt and Two Gun Kid. The two Earp brothers look identical and even the women look like the men. Comics are primarily a visual medium and if done well, this could have been funnier.

This book when done in a group series, has radically changed my life. I feel more emotionally stable, psychologically healthier and spiritually on the right track. It helps to have supportive group members bc i don't think I would have benefitted without the group.

The bulk of it can sound like you are reading through a university thesis

A very interesting and insightful work by Dr. Lieberman. You can tell he has put his life's work into uncovering these universal truths regarding humans and social behavior. There are many factoids regarding communication and people management that I will remember the rest of my life. However, the book reads incredibly dry. The bulk of it can sound like you are reading through a university thesis, which makes sense given the author's credentials and primary field of study. His attempt at making the data heavy experiments digestible is to sandwich the base material between an intro and conclusion in layman's prose. Unfortunately, sections sometimes read as: Intro, A+B=C, A+B≠D, Conclusion. While the non data oriented parts read well, I wish he could have injected that tone throughout the book without sacrificing information. With all that being said, if you are interested in understanding more about the human condition, I absolutely recommend this book. Great insight for managers or those working with large teams.

Ah ha moments

Social, by Matthew Lieberman, is a good read for students and professionals that need to understand how our Social brains work. I teach social awareness skills and this has been interesting to understand what controls and keeps our brains engaged. I gave it 4 stars because it is not compelling reading. That being said, it contains groundbreaking information that needs to be digested and considered and shared.

Looking Beyond the Obvious

You may be tempted, as I was, to say "DUH!" to the affirmation that we are wired to connect. Nonetheless, Dr. Matthew Lieberman has presented some fascinating and compelling hard data to show how meaningful conversations and well-being are so intimately related. In the leadership development programs that I design, I have found the information in this book very valuable.

Simple yet effective tricks that can modified to seemingly more complex illusions (ex: Dean's Box).

Anyone interested in magic will enjoy and learn a lot from this and any of the other Fulves books on magic published by Dover. With a little imagination and storytelling, simple thirty second tricks can become fifteen minute illusions. After all, magic is the secret AND the performance. The magician is the magic.

Real Nuts & Bolts Time Management

This fine book stands alone as a real "nuts & bolts" guide to time management. Refreshingly, Griessman does not ask the reader to buy into an integrated or even singular "System" of managing your time. There are no self tests, no "12 Step" program, no gimmicks.
Quite simply, this book is about survival. If your boat were sinking or you were lost in the wilderness, the last thing you would want (or have time to read) would be a lengthy treatise on the theory of bouyancy or how people get lost. Rather, Griessman instructs from the outset that you "Learn survival techniques from the survivors."
In this vein, Griessman's approach is decidedly simple: 1)These are successful people; 2) Here are specific tactics that they use to save time and survive; 3) You fill in the blank. This format is woven into 15 short chapters with an accompanying commentary which is almost editorial in nature. This provides just enough cohesion in the book to give it structure, without detracting from its readability.
If you're looking for a lengthy treatise on time management, riddled with charts, self tests and lengthy explanations about why you don't have enough time, then leave this book on the shelf. "Time Tactics" is really a field manual - the same kind of lean, to the point writing you'd hope to find in a life raft.

Highly useful! A good reminder of easy tools to save time

Unlike most time management books going from chapter to chapter that lead readers to plan, set and prioritize their personal goals, treating time management problems essentially as life management problems, this book consists of 15 chapters of 96 short essays or tactics that you can easily apply to our daily lives. What a pity that Amazon does not post sample pages as it usually does which includes the Content pages so you can easily understand what kind of book this is, I take the pleasure to do it for you and hope it will help you grasp what the book tells.

If B. Eugene Griessman wanted a good subtitle for this book of time-saving tactics, he could use, "Time waits for no one." He offers many common-sense pointers on how to avoid wasting your time - and how to keep others from wasting it, too. It's eye-opening to realize and calculate the value and importance of every hour, even your leisure time. People in all walks of life - students, stay-at-home parents, business leaders, teachers, self-employed workers - can glean ideas for using time effectively from this book. If you are a procrastinator, this book will encourage you to "do it now." While some of the suggestions here may seem too simplistic to those who already employ some time-management tactics, we [...] recommend this book for inveterate - if inadvertent - time-wasters. You know who you are.
