About the Author

William A. Howe�(Ed.D. Teachers College/Columbia University) is the retired�education consultant for Multicultural Education and Gender Equity at the Connecticut State Department of Education. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut, Albertus Magnus College, Quinnipiac University; and past President of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME). Howe has given over 400 workshops, lectures, and keynotes on diversity, multicultural education and organizational development. He is a regular presenter at state and national conferences and has appeared on both radio and television on diversity issues. He is a member of the editorial board of�Multicultural Perspectives, the official journal of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME); and the advisory Board for the Journal of Family Diversity in Education. Howe is the Past-Chair of the Connecticut Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission, and was recently honored with the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award�presented by Teachers�College/Columbia University.

Penelope L. Lisi is Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at Central Connecticut State University and has been on the faculty since 1994. She teaches courses at the masters, 6th year certification, and doctoral levels in leadership for teaching and learning. Her research interests focus on leadership for school improvement and building learning environments that value diverse learner needs. For a number of years, she has taught graduate courses at Sam Sharpe Teachers College in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and with the Teachers College of New Jersey in their masters degree program in Palma, Mallorca. She presents regularly at national and international conferences and has served as Editor of Multicultural Perspectives, the official scholarly publication of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME), since 1998.

This is an ideal textbook or reference for any teachers and educators working in the classrooms and serving the divers learners. This book is engaging and practical and it focuses on essential questions and theoretical concepts about becoming a multicultural educator. With the updated Second Edition, this book is packed with new activities and exercises to illustrate concepts that readers can use in the diverse classrooms and school settings. I highly recommend this book!

Couldn't put this down

My upbringing contained many things in common with Ana's and I was, therefore, anxious to read of her past and what the Lord is doing today in and through her life. I was totally amazed at her treatment of Scripture and how it applied to all she does in seeking and serving the Lord. This is a MUST for anyone who believes that we are in a spiritual war and that Satan is indeed moving to and fro seeking whom he may devour.

This book is a must have for the spiritual warrior. In these last days The Spirit of god is pouring out fresh insight, wisdom, vision, strategy and anointing- a mantal which Ana Mendez certainly has. For a certain audience

Asterisk was a lonely man writing for an outlet, rather then to a friend and so the stories are often complete. Though, I would love to read the letters his friend wrote back to him to get the full conversation. I think the enjoyment of his letters increases if the reader has had personal experience in the Islands of Vanuatu. WIthout a personal context the book would drag on, as he spends time complaining about everything in turns. The thing i adore about Asterisk, is that he seems to hate everything equally one day and love it the next. His disillusionment to find the New Hebrides a much rougher and more complex place then one he had imagined based on his reading and outright obsession with Robert Lewis Stevenson's accounts makes his own tale that much more intriguing. The reader becomes drawn into the story as they watch Asterisk struggle between what he thinks something should be, and what the reality of that thing is. Asterisk possesses the ingrained prejudice of an Englishmen for the time, place and social status and yet he sometimes recognizes that and tries to apologize or over come it within his letters. He writes with good detail and clean language without getting mired in adjectives. Though sometimes very offhand about gruesome events, he addresses realities of life on the plantations without romance. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Non-Fiction, Historical Travel Logs or is interested in learning about the colonial history of Vanuatu.

Isles of Illusion

This is a major work regarding ethnography, sociology and philosophy in general as well as a very fine piece of literature from Robert James Fletcher, who unfortunately was never to produce better than this. Already owning other editions of this book, I wanted to have a look at this paperback one. Well, I guess it is all right for a new reader despite the fact that the author real identity, well known in 1986, could have been put on the cover instead of the initial pseudonym. Save Gavin Young introduction for better times and begin the book with the author's friend Bohun Lynch foreword. Bon voyage!

The poor brute’s life would be one long martyrdom

I first heard about this book while reading Slow Boats Home by Gavin Young. A contact in a Hong Kong shipping office had loaned Young a beaten up copy of this long out of print classic. And Young carried it with him as he travelled by freighter across the South Pacific. The quotes and references he shared were so intriguing that I was determined to track it down for myself. Thankfully it was reissued, and resurrected from the shadowy world of forgotten stories.

“Asterisk”, as the author was known, was a dissatisfied British schoolteacher who had read the letters that Robert Louis Stevenson published from Samoa. And in 1910, at the age of 33, he set off to find his own South Pacific dreams.

Asterisk hoped to make his fortune working on a plantation, but the brutal life that he found quickly disillusioned him. This book — edited and compiled from letters he wrote to his friend Bohun Lynch, and published by that friend without his knowledge – are a masterpiece of directness and honesty.

Asterisk chronicles the hardships of his life and his descent into 7 years of misery with cutting wit and scathing honesty. He wrote about another side of a place that many dreamed of as an enchanted tropical paradise, and he captured a vivid snapshot of a vanished age.

But don’t expect a depressing book. His observations are often hilarious in their inventiveness and language. Take this, for example:

“That very night I caught and slew over 30 fleas inside and outside my trousers. I didn’t try and count the host that escaped me. No, if one is going to be a rough traveler, it doesn’t do to be finicking. […] It is simply impossible to keep free of them. That’s why I don’t keep a dog. The poor brute’s life would be one long martyrdom.”

Yes, the is thoroughly a book of its time, and Asterisk’s racist comments about the natives can be off-putting to modern audiences. On the other hand, he also showed great compassion for the islanders he lived among. He doctored them when they were ill, and hated white planters or traders who maltreated or cheated them.

This is a gritty, honest book that’s extremely difficult to forget. A true travel classic.

Exactly what experienced home canners have been asking Ball for! Must have book for them!

There are now three books in the Ball line-up for home canners.

I would say that the following order reflects the hierarchy.

1. Ball Blue Book;
2. Ball Complete;
3. All New Ball Book of Canning (this one)

1. If you are a beginner canner, and don't have (1) yet, you need to get it. It has all the basics in a succinct fashion. And because it's the smallest book, it's the easiest to flip through to find quick reference information on canning beans and other veg perfectly. As of time of writing this review in June 2016 the most current one is: Ball Blue Book, 37th edition, 2014. (Note: there's no metric in this edition, only American volume measurements. If you want metric and weights, you need to search for the UK edition of this book, titled "Ball Blue Book� Guide - Metric Edition.")

2. As you grow in canning you will want to expand your repertoire. Then you will want to add the Ball Complete. It recaps a lot of what is in the Blue Book, and adds a lot more onto it. No photos, though, just a good old-style recipe book.Measurements are given in American and metric. The most current one, as of time of writing this review in June 2016, is:

3. Experienced canners, though, will eventually get bored of the above two books, and hunger for a more challenging set of canning recipes with more interesting ingredients, and a greater choice of pressure canning recipes. This book, the ALL NEW, is the book for them. Lots of ethnic recipes, lots of all new pressure canning recipes for interesting dishes, lots of interesting gourmet ingredients, and Ball has finally caught up with its Canadian sister Bernardin and let the wine flow freely in the recipes. This book goes above and beyond the added variety that home canners have been pleading for from Ball for some years now. Measurements are in American and metric. They've really done a great job here with this book. The only thing is, I'm not sure what they are going to call it when it's not "new" anymore! :}

Eventually you will want all three books. Even experienced canners just wanting to refresh their memories for processing times on a jar of plain mushrooms will always want a copy of the Ball Blue Book to hand, because its brevity is exactly what you want "in the heat of the moment." But as you grow, you may get bored of what is in the Blue Book, and when you do, you will want to get the other two Ball books.

Not a primer, but a great addition to your canning library

Very nice book. Beautifully photographed. As an experienced canner, I don't need a basic primer to show me how to can and preserve. I would use the Ball Blue Book Guide To Preserving, 37th Edition for that. That being the case, this is a nice supplemental book covering quick refreshers of how to water bath and pressure can, fermentation, freezing and dry meats, fruits, and vegetables. What IS nice about this publication is they are now providing the user with some really good recipes you can serve your family which feature your canned and preserved products. I don't think they have done this before.

This book wasn't meant as a beginner's primer for canning at all. It is a continuation of the excellent publications Ball publishes. If you are a novice canner, this isn't the book for you. But as a compliment to your canning library, it is a nice go-to addition. I plan to make a number of the recipes it contains.

Although I like the new recipes

Although I like the new recipes, this book is not up to Ball's quality standards. I'm a master food preserver through the University of California, so I have a fair amount of expertise (plus, over 25 years of experience in food preserving). There's some errors in describing the science behind food preservation, particularly in the pressure canning and the fermentation chapters. For instance, the environment inside a pressure canner is not a vacuum, but rather a pressurized one. This high-pressure environment allows the contents to reach 240F, which is required to destroy botulism spores. The explanation of salt brine's role in the process of fermentation is ambiguous and confusing. The brine does not 'attract' lactobacillus but rather retards the growth of spoilage bacteria, which allows the lactobacillus to out-compete the harmful bacteria. It is the lactobacillus that creates the acidic environment, not the salt. Also, acidity and anaerobicity are two distinct conditions. The book states that the acidity creates the anaerobic environment, which is simply not true.

Some of the recipes contain errors in editing. For example, in at least one salsa recipe (Salsa Roja), garlic is listed as an ingredient, and mentioned in the first step, but never mentioned again. There are several omissions like this.

I also have concerns regarding the use of fresh lime juice instead of bottled juice in some recipes. This may result in some cooperative extensions recommending against using this book. If the fresh juice is recommended as a flavoring rather than an acidifier, this should be noted as such. This is especially confusing because in other places in the book, 5% acidity bottled lemon juice is specifically mentioned.

Other than these issues, the recipes I've made so far are delicious and quite different from the usual fare. I especially like the unique flavor combinations, particularly the addition of fresh herbs, wine, and other new ingredients. I wish I could give this book 5 stars.
