Helping Alternative School Work

The product I ordered was exactly what was needed for the coursework (elective) that the students needed to complete their high school course requrements. Our school, as are many others across the state and the nation, is experiencing lack of funding for some needed items. Where I can, I pitch in by ordering what is needed and making do through improvising. I had already ordered the Annotated Teacher Edition of the Student Activity Workbook before ordering the student workbook; so now I have the resource materials that will go along with the textbook which will allow me to assist the students on a daily basis. GREAT RESOURCE to have in your library

I took an Entrepreneurship class in college but refused to purchase the textbook for it (this is the book used for the class). The professor used slides that had the information in this book and I started to realize how valuable this book could be for those who are interested in starting their own business. I finished the class and ended up purchasing the book to have in my own library.

Sobering view on how privacy was silently lost

It is a meticulously researched, broad overview of how changes in technology and politics influence our privacy, security and freedom. As the author admits, elaboration of this text was inspired by Edward Snowden disclosing classified NSA materials, showing the extent to which people all over the world are invigilated by numerous government agencies. Bruce, a renowned digital security expert, was initially involved in helping journalists from The Guardian understand what was contained in more technical documents.

The book is divided into three parts. The first one describes our world, where every appliance is a computer, everyone is connected, there’s an app for everything - all resulting in enormous amounts of data, pumped each second through the internet. New business models emerged, monetizing user data (e.g. via targeted ads) in exchange for free services. We have traded privacy for convenience. All that information being gathered - unprecedented in history - prompted some governments to deploy mass surveillance programs, theoretically in order to detect terrorist activity. Although Snowden’s whistleblowing relates mainly to NSA and UK’s GCHQ, there are strong clues suggesting that other world powers do the same.

In second part, the author writes about negative effects of mass surveillance - notably the stifling of free speech - and what risks come from the abuse of power from secret agencies. Moreover, it is shown how data mining techniques are ineffective at finding terrorists, on the other hand being helpful in intimidating and controlling whole societies. Author focuses on privacy as an inherent human right, nowadays threatened by the fact that human interactions are losing their historically ephemeral nature; internet forgets nothing.

As Bruce Schneier is deeply convinced that all those changes are mostly harmful - to personal freedoms, transparency of government and police work, democratic procedures, justice etc. - the book, in its last part, concludes with author’s proposals on how to avoid more damage. Privacy and security can coexist; mass surveillance should be replaced with targeted one, allowed by warrant, along police procedures - not espionage (secret) ones. Companies should not yield to NSA claims to insert backdoors - so no bad guys can exploit them. Whichever company collects user data, should do so with transparent rules on how it is used. It is not yet too late to save privacy from waning - if only societies could see through free services and govt-instilled fear of terror, what is really at stake.

Some derogate this title for being biased against US federal agents, sworn to protect the country from terrorist threats and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. I would like to point out that the author does not negate the patriotic intentions of federal personnel; his criticism pertains to how whole agencies are organised (amassed power with little oversight) and how their recently-acquired mass-surveillance tools are not cut out for the job of finding terrorists. Those points are backed by numerous cited facts. On the other hand, it is not hidden that this whole book is an expression of Bruce Schneier’s beliefs; if he writes that privacy “is something we ought to have (...) because it is moral” - he does not have to elaborate too much on why he thinks that, does he? So, yes, the book might be called “biased” - as it supports the notion that some sacrifices, in the name of security, just can not be made. Personal freedoms are the foundation of western societies and must not be given away. I fully agree with Bruce - and suspect that a majority of US and EU inhabitants would too, have they pondered on what actually happened in the surveillance field in last two decades. This book really helps you in realising that.

All in all, I seriously doubt that anyone could write such a convincing and well substantiated book which would oppose “Data and Goliath” message - but, perversely, I would love to see one ;) A must read. For literally each of us.

The Gestapo Could Only Dream of This

if you want to know how little privacy you have and how quickly the US Government, the NSA, the FBI and large corporations, particularly the hi-tech companies, have joined together to surveil you 24/7, then read this. You will be knocked over. It made my ill when I discovered we have no privacy at all. Nada. Zip. What is creepier is the hi-tech barons saying things along the lines of, "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to be afraid of." This is almost word for word what the Nazis said. Deeply disturbing and few of us know much of what this guy writes about. This isn't an expose using "leaked documents". This is a clear, concise book sourced from public documents, meticulously footnoted and well written.

Just finished this work. I agree with the authors ...

Just finished this work. I agree with the author's core thesis, which stands in direct contrast to the Nissenbaum view in her seminal work. This author's work provides a valuable 3000 foot view of how our data as Americans is accessed by various parties on the internet. There is a political bent to the work and the author editorializes heavily - he may not be the most gifted writer known to man, but the value of this work is 5 stars (even though it already confirms much of what I already knew). Warms my heart to know that the author is now a fellow at Harvard, which affords him protection from harassment in providing this type of public service. I'm also in favor of a more secure nation and think our approach should be refocused away from mass collection. Various legal definitions in privacy law need an update. A Snowden type incident was ultimately inevitable - the question is now how do we move forward from here and protect while progressing as a society. The author offer solutions. The angry New York Times review of this work attacks the author for upsetting the status quo. Buy this book.

Engaging exploration of genetics and attendant ethical issue

John Avise's engaging book is both an overview and an introduction to recent genetic research as well as an assessment of the social, ethical and religious ramifications stemming from our manipulation of the genetic code. The terminology is a little formidable in spots, and there is perhaps more genetics being explained here than most general readers would want, but these are minor obstacles when one considers the reward: listening to an expert talk about what's happening in genetics today while considering the implications. I was very impressed with Avise's level-headed and balanced assessment of the controversies. This is a sophisticated book, deeply considered and carefully expressed.
The author is the distinguished Professor of Genetics at the University of Georgia and an evolutionary biologist who really knows his stuff. "The genetic gods" in the title is a metaphor of course--he even refers jokingly to "protein angels" on page 208--his point being that we are to some very real extent at the whims of our genes, just as the Greeks once thought they were at the whims of the gods on Mount Olympus. However don't imagine that Avise is presenting a genetic-centered reductionist approach in this book. He wants to emphasize that the genes are subtly, and sometimes not so subtly, influencing our lives, but that is far from the whole story. Avise suggests that the proper way to look at the culture verses genes debate is to think of culture as an "epigenetic phenomenon...itself a product of biological evolution," and that "genes and culture coevolve" (pp. 158-159). The environment shapes us, but we in turn condition the environment. As Avise expresses it, "the individual's mind to a considerable extent creates itself through the environments it conditions" (p. 159). In our attempt to understand how the mind works and to account for human behavior, Avise's states that a "myopically reductionist approach that neglects multiple levels of biological, personal, and social causation" is inadequate, as are "uncritical holistic approaches alone" (p. 165).
This just makes sense and it also makes moot the sometimes heated "culture verses genetics" debate, which is similar to the old "nature verses nurture" false dichotomy. Quite simply, how can we separate the effects and influence of the environment and culture from that of the genes, and vice versa?
Professor Avise does not shy away from a position on whether we should intervene genetically when something is amiss. While some people believe that "developing embryos are governed by intelligent and caring supernatural forces," Avise insists that "they are governed by natural gene-environment interactions that unfortunately can" go horribly awry as in the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or in Down's syndrome (p. 199). In such cases, he asks, "Should we then take the reins?" His careful answer on the next page is yes, but with the understanding that "the interests of the individuals most closely involved...should take legal precedence over those of more distant parties."
Avise believes that ethical questions about genetic engineering should be considered by all members of society, not just scientists or theologians or lawyers (p. 202). He believes in a case-by-case appraisal (p. 201). "The only approach," he avers, "is that in which the moral authority of a god is asserted." He wryly observes, that since there is such a diversity of opinion, "any supernatural deity either has been strangely silent on such issues or else has conveyed vastly different messages to different listeners."
This book requires an effort on the part of the reader, there is no doubt about that. This is no breezy Time Magazine treatment. But I think what we can learn from Professor Avise on a topic of such overriding human interest is well worth the effort.

Musings on Selfish Genes

John Avise presents a review of contemporary molecular biology which is quite accessible to the 'lay' reader with some prior exposure to the general area of evolutionary-genetics. The discussions are somewhat philosophically charged (i.e. they do not remain necessarily technical) and touch upon social, emotional, and theological issues too. However, there is no attempt at actively engaging the theistic implications of modern genetics; the book remains focussed on the biological & behavioural aspects.

Avise basically elaborates on notion of the "Selfish Gene" which seeks to 'immortalize' itself by using individuals as 'ephemeral' vehicles for perpetuation. Using this point of view, the book reviews the basic doctrines of genetics & evolution, the genesis & replication of life/genes, genetic disorders & benefits, gene replication strategies (including sexual reproduction & death), nature vs. nurture issues, and gene-therapy.

Avise's style is engaging, clear, & succint - and never pedantic. The accompanying glossary is very useful for non-biologists to fallback onto when reading the more technical sections. I only wish that the notes for each chapter had been foot-notes rather than being located to the end of the book (but this is a purely personal preference).

Overall I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in acquainting herself with recent advances in molecular biology, evolutionary genetics, and genetic engineering - and its implication to modern human thought, philosophy, and civilization.

The book also investigates the lives of selected Muslims in America and organizations from the eighteenth century into the twenty-first century. It reveals that there was nothing more than a continuation of typical Islamic deception and subversive jihad. It also documents the lie of the Islamic claim that hundreds of place names in the United States of America and Canada derive from Arabic-Islamic roots. Finally, the book exposes the rewriting of American history by Islamic and pro-Islamic media. This book is alarming, informative, interesting, and true.

An important book at a critical time...

I was privileged to be among the first to read author Dame's final drafts of "The Muslim Discovery of America," and I had the distinct honor of writing the Commendatory Preface which appears in the book's opening pages. Although Mr. Dame is an inquisitive and thorough investigator of seemingly everything of interest that he encounters, he has devoted his full, undivided energies to this new book for more than a year. The result is a tour de force of exposition. He examines the many historical myths advanced by Muslims as the more radical among them seek to expand their influence around the world. Taking advantage of the average person's ignorance of certain subjects, the Islamists seek to convince as many people as possible that Muslims, not Christopher Columbus, discovered the New World; that Muslims invented everything from mathematics to the alphabet to manned flight; and that Western civilization's successes are due to Islam and that its failures are the result of not following Islam.

Mr. Dame's book arrives at a time when Muslims are aggressively trying to extend their influence around the world, either blatantly or surreptitiously. After spending an evening or two reading "The Muslim Discovery of America," the reader will better understand the tactics used by those who would not hesitate to "fundamentally transform" the American way of life of liberty to a life of submission to Shari'ah law.

Some may argue that I have exaggerated the significance of the issue. To them I suggest, read "The Muslim Discovery of America."

I highly recommend this book.

In 2001 the great Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Emeritus, at Princeton University, Bernard Lewis, wrote the book The Muslim Discovery of Europe, which is described as a must-read for anyone interested in Middle Eastern history and ultimately Islam's spread to Europe.

The Muslim Discovery of America is the new 2013 book by Frederick William Dame that addresses not only the erroneous premise that Muslims, not Columbus, discovered America, but the historical reasoning behind the promotion of this lie and how America is simply the next step in the spread of an Islamic caliphate.

I highly recommend this book.

The Muslim Discovery of America is not a book you will read in a few hours, but one you will want to take time reading and keep on your bookshelf for future reference.

As Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs notes in her Foreword to The Muslim Discovery of America, "This book is the record of a colonization."

In my back-and-forth e-mails with Frederick William Dame over the past many years, I was always struck by his vast body of knowledge, his original thinking on a variety of topics, and his riveting accounts of historical events.

Amazingly, he has synthesized all of these qualities in his epic account of "The Muslim Discovery of America" - a title full of irony and even derision for the preposterous notion that Barack Obama has consistently propounded, namely that both Muslims and their political system of Islam, which is interspersed with religious characteristics, were intrinsically involved in the founding, principles, growth, and spectacular success of the United States of America!

The author demonstrates with hard facts and extensive documentation that nothing could be further from the truth.

Dame's book opens with a Commendatory Preface by Don Fredrick, whose name is widely-recognized for his Obama Timeline on the Internet (at [[...]) and for his subsequent books, The Obama Timeline: From his Birth in 1961 Through his First 100 Days in Office and Can It All Be A Coincidence?: Barack Obama's Lifelong Associations With Shady Characters and How He Is Destroying America. Fredrick has documented what he (and increasing millions of people) believe is the fraudulent "Trojan Horse" nature of Obama's presidency.

What follows is a spellbinding Forward by Pamela Geller, famed author of Freedom or Submission: On the Dangers of Islamic Extremism & American Complacency, The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration's War on America (with Robert Spencer), and Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance. *** Most important, the fact that if America doesn't wake up to the encroaching threat of Islam, America is doomed to follow in the steps of formerly-enlightened Europe, where today the "religion of peace" is conducting grisly terrorist attacks and intimidating the populations of many countries into total submission, which is actually the literal definition of Islam.

Dame's book is highly readable and immensely illuminating. If you personally want to stem the tide of what has become not creeping but galloping Islamism and Sharia in America, don't walk but run to your computer to buy Dame's book, or order it from your friendly neighborhood bookstore.
