Great resource for advanced NFB practice
By Kate
Dr. Thatcher is a one of founding fathers of modern quantitative EEG analysis and qEEG-based neurofeedback therapy. His pioneering studies in developmental neuroscience and constructing of normative databases of EEG neurophysiological metrics are well recognized and used in many academical and applied neuroscience researches.

His scientific principles are based on huge experience in mathematical physics, modern mathematical statistics and neurophysiology. This combination guaranties the most conservative and objective view in such revolutionary and cutting-edge therapy as qEEG based neurofeedback.

EEG connectivity, LORETA-based normative metrics, advanced brain network analysis are keywords of methods, presented in this book.

Highly recommended!

Planning the Low-Budget Film
By Patrick Adderson
I have been associated with the film business for the last 20 plus years, and have not read a book that addresses the real world of Low-Budget film making as well as Robert L. Brown has captured. His book should be cumpulsory reading for every film student, and those who would like to understand the nuts and bolts of the business. Mr. Brown has managed to make his book entertaining while being informative. (Not an easy job when talking budgets etc.).

Mr. Brown's years of experience in being one of the industries most respected producers has culminated in an interesting short-cut to understanding and Planning the Low-Budget Film process. Job well done... Patrick W.Adderson.

Useful Guide to Film Budgeting
By Leo Vincey
I am enjoying Robert Latham Brown's Planning the Low-Budget Film. The first half introduces one to basic considerations in budgeting and scheduling a movie, with many anecdotes taken from Brown's experiences making movies for a variety of studios over the last thirty years. The second half is a virtual encyclopedia of film-making, organized according to the budget's chart of accounts. Brown educates the reader about each account, about the considerations involving that expense, in order to project how much money needs to be budgeted for it. A film production manager's job involves interfacing with so many aspects of the world that there is a lot to learn about reality from Brown's anecdotes and discussion of each budget account. He does not appear to hold anything back and is generous with his hard-won experience. For example, in a section titled Lindsley's Method in chapter 22 he shares a method he personally learned for tracking the film's progress - is it ahead of schedule or behind schedule? The book is suitable for film students, but should gradually find its way onto the desks, where it is close at hand, of every film production manager.

entertaining description of how to make a low-budget movie
By Clayton E. Cramer
This is an entertaining discussion of how to prepare a budget for making a low-budget (less than $2 million) movie by a producer with experience making low-budget and high budget films going back decades. If you are making a student film, this is a lot more detail than you'll probably need. If you are looking at making a real movie, something that isn't three of you with a nice camera, this is the book you need.

My only regret is that I ordered the Kindle edition, instead of the paperback. There are a number of places where the paperback would actually be preferable because of the examples in the back.

A Must Read
By Dr Ed
This is a must read book for all Chiropractors out there. Despite our best intentions our profession is simply not making the huge impact on our society that it could and should! Well this book will help correct this and will inevitably change the future of chiropractic. This book offers Hope with a Plan. And unlike so many of the quick fix, unethical practice management books and "gurus" out there, finally here is something that offers real advice to help you build the practice of your dreams - one that is patient centered and patient focused. One that will have longevity! The brutal reality is that there are no short cuts to success! Between the 2 authors they manage to identify all the major pitfalls in practice and outline strategies necessary to combat these problems. They do it in a very simple and articulate way, discussing both the theory and the practical steps! Buy it today!

Must Read - Not just for DC's
By Wade E. Anunson, DC
As an entrepreneur, I have been a big "E-Myth" and Michael Gerber fan for years. Great idea to specialize! I've found Gerber's insight and perspective on small businesses and their pitfalls to be spot on. Breaking the concept down into specifics with Dr. Sovinsky as a chiropractor magnifies the relevance for ALL chiropractors. Dr. Sovinsky clearly has an understanding of our profession and the challenges we face as business owners trying desperately to balance having a life while running a business. I thoroughly enjoyed his message which left me inspired and extremely empowered to create the impactful business I envisioned years ago. This is a must read for any chiropractor or student. It's clear to see that being an outstanding clinician isn't enough - it's essential to master sound business systems that simplify customer/client contact and accessibility.

The takeaway: You will find NO gimmicks or questionable strategies here - just clean, sound action steps to BE a better you, build a better business and to see your business differently than you ever have. Taking great care of patient's, having more fun doing what you love, and having more fulfilling relationships with family and your finances means you WIN! Good reading-

Our profession needs this message!!

By Dr. Sean Orr, DC
A brilliant book from two of the most brilliant minds in their respective fields. Dr. Sovinsky and Michael Gerber combine their expertise to provide a long overdue approach to creating a successful chiropractic business without the hardsell and gimmicks that plague our profession. I love the authenticity, simplicity and integrity this book provides and encourages in its strategies. Most of all, I really love the fact that creating a great practice doesn't mean giving up a life. In fact, a great life and business are really inseparable using the E-Myth approach.

Congratulations to Dr. Sovinsky and Mr. Gerber for creating a book that will not only help Chiropractors, but will surely change the Chiropractic profession!

Cold, hard realities about violence, predators, and the context of violent altercations
By Bernie Gourley
I’ve long realized that all martial arts are models. Models are simplifications; they inevitably leave elements out—sometimes because those elements don’t seem relevant and sometimes because they can’t realistically (re: sanely) be included. Those of us trained as social scientists say two things about models. 1.) All models are wrong, and 2.) All models lie. The question is whether your martial art is the least wrong, i.e. tells the most acceptable lie, for your purposes. Rory Miller’s work illuminates the most crucial part of what martial arts leave aside, violence and the context in which it takes place in the modern world. I say the most crucial part because it’s not excluded because it’s irrelevant; it’s left out because it’s impossible shun safety / encourage violence without the practice devolving into a last man standing competition. (FYI: If you’re saying, “Man, the martial art I study is completely street realistic,” then you need this book more than anyone.)

While it’s important to have safety in a training environment and, therefore, true violence must be prohibited (simulated, but not carried out), it’s important to understand violence so that one can prepare one’s mind for it and train oneself to recognize various types of violence so that one knows the best approach to avoid a bad outcome. One doesn’t want to end up wondering “how could this happen” as one is bleeding out on the ground as martial artists from a range of styles have experienced. I’m not saying martial arts aren’t valuable, and I don’t think Miller is either (he’s long practiced them, as have I.) While martial arts may not prepare one perfectly for a violent conflict, they move one in the right direction. The only real downside is if one allows oneself to be deluded into thinking one is going to roll through waves of enemies without a scratch like Jet Li or Steven Seagal on the silver screen. That’s why it’s important not only to read such a book as this, but to give serious thought to changing the narrative that plays out in one’s mind about the nature of violence so as to move it away from movie / sport fighting towards an approach that is most likely to get one and one’s loved ones out alive.

The book consists of seven chapters, plus front and back matter. The first chapter introduces two matrices as ways to frame one’s thoughts on the conflict. The first, the tactical matrix, looks at different types of attacks one might experience (eg. surprise ambush through preemptive attack) relative to allowable use of force (can one legitimately injure or kill one’s opponent?) The second, the strategic matrix, considers the various types of combative endeavors (e.g. self-defense, duel, sport, combat/military operations) and there goals, approaches, and dangers.

Chapter two is entitled, “How to Think,” and the emphasis is on “to think.” The central lesson is to not take ideas on faith, particularly ideas about the nature of violence from people who haven’t experienced it—particularly when those ideas seem to run counter to reality. Because violence is such a rarity, it is a subject for which there is a great disconnect between expertise and experience. (i.e. Chances are your plumber has unclogged tens to thousands of drains, but also that the person teaching you knife disarms has never been in a single knife fight.) The chapter considers the various fallacies and how they can be resistant to destruction. Emphasis is given to understanding your goals, making them realistic, and having a pragmatic path to achieving them. The take-away quote is, “Do not let yourself be crippled by something that only exists in your mind.” The chapter ends by looking at decision-making at the speed of a fight, which is pretty quick.

Chapter three gets to the heart of the subject, violence. It differentiates various types of violence, and considers the context (setting, timing, and the nature of the interaction) in which violent interactions take place. Much of the discussion revolves around what Miller calls the “monkey dance” -an attempt to exert dominance that often escalates into a fight. This is differentiated from predatory violence that demands a different approach. This section also addresses the neurochemical cocktail that gets shot into one’s system and the effects that it typically has—which is a leading cause of events unfolding differently than expected.

Chapter four describes the various types of individuals with whom one might find oneself engaged in a violent altercation. This is an important topic because the path to a best outcome varies depending upon the nature of the criminal, and so one’s ability to differentiate types of predator and to know how to best deal with each is as essential a skill as knowing the technical nuances of a punch or choke.

The fifth chapter examines training approaches, and how the typical martial arts education leaves one with blind-spots and built-in flaws. The chapter begins by looking at the many ways in which martial arts make modifications from realistic conditions in order to be safe. Most martial artists realize that they are training techniques or drilled responses into their subconscious so that their bodies can respond automatically--without the need for [slow] conscious thought--during a conflict. However, there’s a further assumption that the unrealistic parts of that movement (e.g. slowness or avoiding vulnerable targets) will go away under real life conditions. In an earlier chapter, there was a discussion of the fact that attacks are usually faster, harder, at closer range, and more surprising than expected (Miller calls it the four basic truths), and this chapter considers some ways that one can prepare for those realities.

The sixth chapter considers how one can make self-defense work. It should be pointed out that this isn’t just about how to engage in the fight, but also how to stay out of a fight or get away from it as quickly as is possible. There’s also a discussion of set rules for determining when one must fight. This is the type of notion that one must think about ahead of time, because one can’t expect to think clearly once the adrenaline has been dumped into one’s system. The remainder of the chapter explores how one is most likely to get out of an altercation alive once the fight has become inevitable.

The final chapter delves into the question of what comes after the violent encounter. This is also a subject on which many martial artists have unrealistic notions. If one survives in an unheroic / ungraceful way, one may have guilt or dismay about how imperfectly events unfolded. On the other hand, say everything works out for one, but one kills the predator. Most people seem to think that this won’t be troubling, because it was justified. This misses the fact that there are many traumatized soldiers who were also completely justified, but if you aren’t a hardcore psychopath, you aren’t wired for killing.

I found a lot of valuable food for thought in this book. The author includes many stories (sometimes funny and sometimes disturbing) that help to make the lessons memorable and poignant. Tables, charts, and the occasional photograph are used to illustrate points as well.

I’d recommend this book for anyone who’s concerned about violent altercations. If you’re a martial artist who has no such concerns because you think you have a lock on it, then you probably doubly need this book.

Thought-Provoking
By Jiang Xueqin
In his book "Meditations on Violence," corrections officer Sgt. Rory Miller explains well that society has fundamentally failed to understand the nature of violence, and that socially acceptable depictions of violence -- whether they be Hollywood movies or martial arts training -- are all flawed. Violent individuals are violent at a fundamental level, and for repeat violent offenders, prison is R & R rather than rehabilitation, Miller argues. While we have all been socially conditioned to not harm others and to see the good in others, violent individuals do wish harm on others -- that's why no amount of martial arts training will do anyone any good unless the person is willing to inflict violent damage on another human being -- and the vast majority of us are not willing to do that. Violence is a tearing apart of the social fabric and social contract that we have lived our lives by, and that's why the emotional trauma of violence is so much greater and more everlasting than the physical trauma.

So in preparing for the possibility of violence we all face a Catch-22. To prepare for violence we can do drills so that our reflexes respond instantaneously to surprise attacks, but to do so would also mean a complete overhaul of our worldview and our relationship to the world around us. We can no longer see the world as a benevolent place that fits into neat and tidy patterns. Violence is a result of randomness and chaos, and we need to accept the fact that we could be victims at any time, and if we are threatened then we must respond with maximum violence to counter the threat. In other words, to truly defend ourselves from violence, we need to become just as paranoid and as anti-social as the violent criminals we seek to protect ourselves from.

Towards the book's close, Miller reveals to us the emotional trauma and wreckage that a lifetime of thinking about, managing, and teaching violence has created -- depression and paranoia, an unstable family life, lost friends, etc. Miller is absolutely right in that society fails to understand the true nature of violence, and refuses to accept it for what it is -- what he fails to see is that society has done so for very good reasons.

Worth Reading
By The Agnostic Apatheist
If you've ever wondered about the practical application of your martial art (or martial arts, in general) to real world violence, then this book is worth reading. This is NOT a technique book. If you are looking for a set of techniques or detailed tactics, then look elsewhere. Rather, this book is an "analytical" work, examining violence and appropriate training to address such violence.

The author examines some important training gaps in martial arts schools. These gaps include:

- Lack of distinction between sport vs. dueling vs. self-defense vs. combat
- Lack of proper scenario training
- Lack of awareness and avoidance training
- Inadequate de-escalation training or conflict resolution techniques
- Poor or inadequate discussion of legal repercussions
- Poor or inadequate discussion of psychological impact

He also discusses important differences in the types of violence that occur in the real world. While most martial arts schools focus on one type of violence (e.g. the one-on-one duel in an open environment), actual violence occurs in other forms that are poorly addressed during training. Multiple opponents is almost never addressed, or only discussed in passing. Rather than training for surprise knife attacks, many schools train for knife duels, where two individuals are wielding blades. Knife duels rarely occur. Most knife attacks are one-sided; that is, one person has a concealed blade and overwhelms his victim. While nearly all martial arts schools teach young kids, most do not adequately address kidnapping. And the list goes on.

Moreover, the legal and psychological consequences (for the victim) are almost never discussed in martial arts schools. Yet self-defense begins long before the first punch is thrown and may continue many months or years after the confrontation has ended in the form of a civil or criminal lawsuit. Thus, the author states that in most physical conflicts, there is no true winner. Both parties are typically injured, whether physically, psychologically, and/or financially. In fact, the "winner" of a fight may find himself in prison or bankrupt. In such a case, who truly "won" the conflict?

Despite the useful discussions, I had three criticisms with the book. First, I did not like how the book was formatted. It wasn't terrible, but the topics were not always grouped intuitively together. In short, the book could have been structured better. Second, in select parts of the text, the author's use of pronouns was confusing. It was not always clear who the "he" or "him" was referring to. Was it the perpetrator or the victim? Third, I felt the author's experience as a correctional officer may not correlate (as simply as the author might suggest) with what a civilian experiences in the real world. A correctional officer experiences a certain respect or authority over the violent criminal by virtue of his position, a respect that would be absent for the typical civilian. The officer has weapons at his disposal, as well as a small back-up team. This is known to the violent offender. This creates a different relationship between the perpetrator and the victim, compared to what a civilian would experience. Nonetheless, this last point does not detract from the main theme and message of the book.

Overall, "Meditations on Violence" is a unique text that explicitly spells out the distinction between martial arts and real world violence - a topic that many of us have thought about. I recommend this book to anyone thinking about studying martial arts or currently in a martial art. It is worth reading.

Children of Armenia: A Forgotten Genocide and the Century-long Struggle for Justice, by Michael Bobelian

From 1915 to 1923, the Ottoman Empire drove the Armenians from their ancestral homeland and slaughtered 1.5 million of them in the process. While there was an initial global outcry and a movement led by Woodrow Wilson to aid the “starving Armenians,” the promises to hold the perpetrators accountable were never fulfilled. In this groundbreaking work, Michael Bobelian profiles the leading players—Armenian activists and assassins, Turkish diplomats, U.S. officials— each of whom played a significant role in furthering or opposing the century-long Armenian quest for justice in the face of Turkish denial of its crimes, and reveals the events that have conspired to eradicate the “forgotten Genocide” from the world’s memory.

From Publishers Weekly
The 1915 genocide perpetrated by the Turkish government against its Armenian subjects drags on in the form of Turkish denial and global indifference, according to this rancorous history. Journalist Bobelian gives a sketchy rundown of the massacres (what difference did it make if several hundred thousand Armenians died rather than 1.5 million?), but his main story is the ensuing refusal of Turkey and the international community—especially the United States—to properly acknowledge the crime. He chronicles a generations-long contest between moral claims and realpolitik; after initial Western outrage, the genocide was shoved off the agenda of Turkish-American relations by commercial interests and the anti-Soviet alliance. The book provides an exhaustive account of the perennial battles between Armenian-American activists and Turkey's lobbyists over congressional genocide resolutions. The victimization of the Armenians' excuses much for Bobelian, who blames Armenian terrorism in the 1970s and 1980s—he sympathetically profiles an aging survivor who assassinated two Turkish diplomats—on frustration and rage over Ankara's denials. One leaves this j'accuse wondering if the quest for justice can be taken to an unhealthy extreme. (Sept. 1)

From The Washington Post
From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by Justin Moyer moyerj@washpost.com Like Native Americans, European Jews and Rwandan Tutsis, Turkish Armenians seem to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. "Children of Armenia," Michael Bobelian's first book, describes the Ottoman Empire's 1915 mass extermination of this Christian minority without getting bogged down in "G-word" histrionics. "The purpose of this book is neither to prove the existence nor affirm the veracity of the Genocide," Bobelian writes: The Armenian holocaust is a historical fact. "Children of Armenia" focuses on the Turkish nationalism, world war weariness, survivor psychology and Cold War squabbling that let the world forget the unforgettable. Some will flinch at Bobelian's lionization of Gourgen Yanikian, an Armenian who shot two Turks in a revenge plot hatched in the 1970s, but the author stumbles only when he strays into Armenian exceptionalism, the idea that "no other people have suffered such a warped fate -- a trivialization of their suffering and a prolonged assault on the authenticity of their experience." Bobelian should know that if every culture insists on the supremacy of its own suffering, the world will only grow more jaded about stopping current horrors. Instead, any book about Armenia -- no, any exploration of any genocide -- should pose questions relevant to today's ethnic cleansings. Otherwise, who will remember the Sudanese?

Thorough and Gripping
By M. Schneider
Mr. Bobelian delivers a thoroughly researched and documented account
of the Armenian people's struggle for justice to avenge the genocide
of their ancestors by Turkey, almost a century ago. Though well
documented by the global press and foreign governments at the time,
the Turkish government, with the aid of the U.S. and European
governments, has acted to deny and all but extinguish the world's
memory of this tragedy. Bobelian illuminates the complex power
struggle between morality, justice, and historical fact on the one
hand, and national security, politics, and corporate interest on the
other. First with the establishment of U.S. corporate interests, and
then with the establishment of national security interests, the U.S.
has created a relationship with Turkey that is so tenuous, that
Presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack
Obama have all refused to publicly acknowledge the genocide once they
were elected; not because they deny the near extermination of an
entire people, but because they fear angering the Turkish government.
By incorporating three different storylines of actual individuals
involved in this struggle, Bobelian creates a dramatic narrative that
is one part historical and one part legal thriller. As I read
Children of Armenia, I could not help but think about more recent
genocides in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Sudan and whether our national
interests will lead us to aid the denial of these atrocities in the
decades to come. Bobelian's deep and thorough research will resonate
with academia-focused readers, while his narrative style will resonate
with casual readers of history, making Children of Armenia a must-read
for anyone interested in the interplay between human rights, global
politics, and global economics.

Much-Needed Work Fills Many Gaps
By John M. Evans
Until now, it has been far easier for an American reader to learn about the facts of the Armenian Genocide, which took place nearly a hundred years ago, than to trace the story of the Genocide's survivors: how they have variously attempted to seek revenge, justice, or at least acknowledgement of what happened to their families and forebears. Children of Armenia: a Forgotten Genocide and the Century-long Struggle for Justice, by Michael Bobelian, a Columbia-trained journalist and lawyer, fills in many of the gaps, and does so in a vivid and highly readable way. Episodes that Bobelian sheds particularly helpful light upon include the short-lived First Republic of Armenia (1919-20), the assassination of Archbishop Tourian in a New York Church on Christmas Eve 1933, the effects of the Cold War and the Truman Doctrine in changing the equities and the attitudes of the U.S. Government toward Armenia and the Armenians, the reawakening in the 1960s of Armenian consciousness and assertiveness concerning the Genocide, the period of terrorist assassinations of Turkish officials in the 1970s and 1980s, and the prodigious efforts of Armenians to win recognition of the fact of the Genocide in Washington, against the intense pressure of Turkish official denial and behind-the-scenes lobbying. This book in many ways picks up where Peter Balakian's 2003 The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America's Response left off. It continues the story right up to our own time and the recent "football diplomacy" between Yerevan and Ankara. While I had a quibble with a turn of phrase here and there, Mr. Bobelian's overwhelming contribution is to have made a very complicated tale comprehensible to an outsider, and to have provided illuminating portraits of so many of the key actors (for example, Gourgen Yanikian, Senator Bob Dole, Van Krikorian, Vartkes Yeghiayan) in these interlocking dramas, all of which have roots in the Genocide, but each of which is in some way unique. I heartily recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand why it is that Armenians care so passionately about the Genocide.

A Gripping Story And A Seminal Text
By Patrick Landers
There are a number of books that describe the events of the Armenian Genocide, but there are no books, other than this one, that describe the struggle for recognition of that genocide between 1915 and 2008. This book is the seminal text on this topic.

At the outset, and of particular relevance to the general reader, I think its important to say that this is not a dry tome recounting facts and dates. On the contrary, it is a fast-paced narrative that tells the story of the struggle for recognition of the Armenian Genocide through the lives of three men. The book opens with Gourgen Yanikian, a 77 year old terrorist plotting the assassination of Turkish diplomats as his final act of revenge for the horrors that haunt him. We then meet Vartkes Yeghiayan, a lawyer who brought a class action suit against New York Life, seeking to win a judgment for thousands of unclaimed policies. The third character is Van Krikorian who together with Senator Bob Dole campaigned tirelessly to gain public recognition of the Genocide from the US government.

Within this accessible narrative, Bobelian unfolds, never-before-seen research into the reaction of the US government and individuals within the government to the cause of Armenian Genocide recognition. The compelling question Bobelian tries to answer is how the United States went from front-page outrage in the New York Times and other newspapers of record in 1915 to the failure to recognize the genocide as such almost 100 years later. Bobelian offers a balanced explanation, clearly explaining the geo-political role that Turkey has played in US foreign policy, especially since the Second World War, but also describing, in nail-biting detail, the frantic lobbying of US politicians by the Turkish government and the susceptibility of American politicians to, and complicity in, this seduction.

This book obviously has an urgent and deep significance for Armenians today. But it is also shot through with universal themes and insights that are compelling to non-Armenians. Firstly, the issue of genocide recognition, whether it be the Jewish Holocaust or the current genocide in Darfur, is obviously of the utmost urgency to all human beings. Echoing the well-known poem by Pastor Martin Niemller, this book makes one reflect on one's own insecurity should one find oneself, or one's kin, the victims of savage, uncivilized, state-sanctioned thuggery, and buried for decades beneath an immoral geo-political calculus. Secondly, the book speaks to the role of memory in cultural identity. On the one-hand there are the Armenians whose cultural-identity is gripped by the need to remember, while on the other the modern Turkish identity seems to require a continuous forgetting. Thirdly, the context of this book in the life of its author is one to which many will relate and draw inspiration. Bobelian's family barely survived the Genocide. One cannot help but feel, from the immense amount of research (the copious footnotes span some 45 pages at the end of this 293 page text) that to read this book is to witness a dialogue through diligence between a modern urbane Armenian-American author living in the 21st century, and an unresolved past. As such it speaks to a universal human condition; our capacity for empathy with past injustice visited upon kith and kin, our inherited commitment to see justice done, the weight of that inheritance, and our own search for self-actualization and peace along the way.

Companion piece
By Eric Nagel
I read The Alchemist earlier this year, and when I saw the news about the Graphic Novel edition, I was excited. I received this version as a gift Christmas morning, and finished it before dinner. It's a nice collectible version, but if you're looking to get more out of the story, or you're only going to read one or the other, go with the original version of The Alchemist. Personally, these two will sit side-by-side on my bookshelf - each has its own place & purpose.

Better to read the plain book.
By Nicole B
I read Coelho's book before trying this graphic novel. In comparison, I found the graphics distracting; I was less able to imagine the characters while reading as I was forced to look at the artists rendition of their faces, which was different than I had pictured them. The artist is talented, so not for any lack of skill, but it was just too much.

Overall, if you're looking to become acquainted with The Alchemist, I would suggest reading the first book, not the graphic novel.

A Life-Changer
By Adam H.
"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." The Alchemist is a delightful book about realizing your destiny. I had always heard of Paulo Coelho and I knew that "The Alchemist" was the book of his to read. However, it wasn't until it was gifted to me by my cousin that I actually read it. This is the most inspiring book you will ever read. The protagonist, Santiago, a young shepherd boy, embarks on a journey to fulfill his destiny. His tale starts in the mountains of Spain with a recurring dream of visions of the Great Pyramids of Egypt. At the onset of the tale, the boy is a kind of aimless vagrant who travels the lands with his sheep. He is encouraged by a few wise people to pursue his vision and demonstrate to the boy that this is very well his destiny. And Voila; we are taken on his journey from Spain, to the bustling markets of Northern Algeria and into the perilous deserts of Egypt. Coelho has this intangible way of making you deeply engrossed in this boy's story. This is likely because we see ourselves and our own path to realize our own destinies in the boy. The boy is you. The boy is me. In more ways than not, "The Alchemist" is a kind of self help book. A book where the story/literature exists largely so that the author can present philosophical ideas about how to live. This is something I prefer over a standard Self Help book with a step by step procedure. Instead, we are given a story with characters whom we care about and through this story and through these characters we can extract self help guidance. Many people, like myself, would prefer this over a scientific, step by step methodical approach.

"You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it's better to listen to what it has to say. That way you'll never have fear of an unanticipated blow." I have never been the type to bookmark certain lines or pages in a book because I liked a line or quote. Nothing has ever moved me so much as to require my lazy ass to post it note my book. However, if you look at my copy of "The Alchemist," you'll find about 15 post it notes stuck in there from quotes i loved. The story is just beautiful; whether I had a session of reading it for 5 straight chapters or I only read about a page, every time I closed the book, I felt myself have love and compassion for the world. No other book has had this impact on me.
