Since his heroin overdose in 1980, Darby Crash has become a symbol of punk irreverence, but his posthumous fame has tended to overshadow the seminal work of the punk band he fronted, the Germs. Mullen (who coauthored We Got the Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of L.A. Punk), along with ex-Germs drummer Bolles and writer Parfrey, quickly deconstructs the myth of Crash (n Jan Paul Beahm) to reveal an embattled and confused soul who struggled with drug use and his homosexuality. Featuring raw quotations from Crash's peers in the burgeoning 1970s West Coast punk scene, the book offers both positive and negative views of the singer and the scene that raised him. Crash's fans were known for their cultish reverence, and Crash himself is shown to be a self-conscious misfit who used psychological ploys to enlist followers. It is unlikely that this book will reach a wide audience and thus imbue Crash's legacy with more humanity and, in turn, the Germs with more respectability, but it does strengthen the growing literature on American punk music. Recommended for popular music collections, especially as a complement to We Got the Neutron Bomb, which covers similar ground and whose oral history format this book replicates. This intense oral history traces the life of a rock icon so enigmatic that few knew he was gay. The Germs had released only one album, G.I., before their leader, Darby Crash (ne Paul Beahm), 22, OD'd in a suicide pact (the other participant survived). His death, covered in detail here, just enhanced the Germs' cachet as protopunks. The book's compilers--Germs drummer Don Bolles is one of them--also serve up a lot about early West Coast punk, reported by a virtual punk who's who, sans, perhaps refreshingly, Henry Rollins, but including Jello Biafra, Exene Cervenka, Phranc ("America's Favorite Jewish Lesbian Folksinger"), and two who figured massively in the love triangle that, among many other factors, precipitated Darby's last exit, Gerber ("Queen of L.A. Punk") and Rob Henley. Evocative as hell of the punk ethos ("Part of the $400 [for the overdose drugs] was my rent money," mourns Ella Black), not least because of scads of photos of baby-faced adolescents (some nude) trying to look ugly. breathtaking cultural history

As a cultural history of Los Angeles in the 1970s, this book can't be beat.

Visually stunning photographs and a refreshing, multiperspective commentary bring qualities of both Faulkner and the blog together in a chronological progression to the suicide of Darby Crash. I especially enjoyed the coroner's document and the funeral bill, but all the exhibits were great.

The book includes an unbelievable involvement of church and state in the Scientology influenced Innovative Program School in Los Angeles which 'graduated' Darby in 1976. This section once again shows the importance of LSD in late 20th century culture.

The dynamic of LA punk as it emerged in artfag circles, was subsumed in a Huntington Beach testosterone surge of disaffection and violence consuming punk and creating thrash hardcore. Darby Crash's closeted homosexuality and his apparent fear of rejection for it in late 70's culture, adds historical depth to the effects of discrimination, even among the young.

The book is compelling. I missed Darby's show at the Mabuhay, although I saw the other big show of the weekend, the Sex Pistols at Winterland.

The great strength of the book is the stylistic approach, the book being years in the making. Adding the content into that, I think it's the biggest thing in American literature since Douglas Coupland's Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture in 1991.

Disspelling the numerous rumours,myths and outright lies this book gives quite a detailed oral history of the legendary Darby Crash, founder and singer-songwriter of the infamous ,seminal L.A punk band The Germs (a band you either love or hate with equal passion).Although this book does away with alot of the misinformation commonly regarded as fact and certainly puts a much clearer focus into the events that led up to Darbys death you cant help but still feel,despite the intense details provided by those close to him that no one ever truly "knew" Darby and he will forever remain the enigma he wanted to be all along.As a fan (one of my children is actually named Darby)this book was indeed a "must have" and a thoughly good read but it certainly left me wanting more(time to read Mr.Mullens other book on LA Punk!)and with many "what if?" questions.This book is really only for the true Germs fan (which there are many despite Pat Smears' assertion in the book that they were only a "teeshirt" band and "no one really listened to the music "-HAHAHA)so I wouldnt really recomend it to the non-intiated. ...........Footnote: Does anyone know if there is ever going to be an "X" book???? The worlds ready!!!!

About the Author
Rajendra Kher was born in Pune, India on 3rd of January 1961. He completed his graduation from Pune University and is been writing since last 22 years. His father late Mr. B. D. Kher was also a prolific author with over a hundred books published out of which more than a couple have been garnered with awards both at national and international level. This background has helped him develop a liking for writing in the early years. He has a count of 10 works published till date and majority of them are translated and widely accepted across languages throughout India and abroad. Mr. Kher has received 5 prestigious awards for his contribution in the field of literature so far. His novel ‘Geetambari’, based on Bhagavad-Gita, received equal response from readers and critics. English translation of this novel- ‘The Song of Salvation’ published by Zumaya Publications, USA. His work includes a novel ‘Digvijay’ (The Victory), on the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, now in its fifth re-printing, ‘The Silent Reformer’ (detailing the life and times of revered Pandurang Shastri Athavale, founder of Swadhyay Parivar). Thanks to the tremendous audience response the Marathi version of this novel is currently in its 24th edition. ‘Dhananjay’, a novel on the life of Arjuna, in its sixth re-printing. His recent suspense-fantasy novel ‘Bindusarovar’ (The Bindu Lake) became popular among the readers and appeared in TOP 5 book-list of prestigious news-paper. He has had his fare share of experience in the film business, having spent around 10 years in Indian Film Industry both for small and big screen. A notable 2 years of this journey were spent as Program Director for a renowned TV channel. He has to his credit numerous scripts, screenplays and short stories for newspapers and magazines.

Very peaceful

Loved reading this book. It gives insight to a different type of lifestyle and age of this world's history that most people do not think about. I recommend it to anyone because this biography is not based on religion, but rather upliftment of the human race through spirituality. There are a lot of things to learn as well as just open your eyes to different world that others live in.

This book is optimal control problem solving with Matlab. If you want to solve TPVBP with Matlab, this book is for you. And there are numerous other topic regarding DDP etc. However, this book is not text book but reference book. The explanation about optimal control is well posed but lacks some details. If you know what the optimal control is and want to SOLVE the practical optimal control problem with Matlab, read this book. Highly Recommended.

A great introduction to Windows 8.1

I read the review that said the person was frustrated at not being able to find something in the book. I don't think it is fair to criticize a whole book because one thing wasn't in the index in the way the reader expected.The print edition comes with a free companion ebook that is fully searchable, so all it takes is a download and a look to find any given term. Or if you don't want to do that, use Amazon's "look inside the book" feature to find what you want (I have done that many times).

I found this to be a well written, thoroughly illustrated guide to Windows 8.1. My only (small) criticism of it is that I think at this time most people will be coming to Win8.1 as an upgrade from Win8 rather than looking at it on a brand new computer, and the instructions for upgrading, while extremely useful, were relegated to the back of the book. That's just a personal quibble and doesn't reduce my overall opinion of the book at all.

The authors clearly know what they're talking about, and their approach to Win8.1 makes sense.The differences between Win8 and Win8.1 are carefully explained, and the authors tell it like it is.

All the Step By Step books I've read have lived up to their names, taking the reader from the simple to the complex in easy increments. This book would be incredibly useful for someone facing Win8.1 for the first time (and for Windows 8, there is the previous edition of this book which is equally good).

Easy to understand

When my Dad (82) bought his new laptop he was so confused on the where everything was and why is it different. SO, I got him the Windows 8.1 Step by Step. It has helped him tremendously navigating thru “new” Windows. I don’t get as many daily phone calls, “What am I looking at?” “Where is this?”

He explained this Step by Step book has been easy for him to understand and follow. It has lived up to it’s name and has kept peace in our family. It’s a great introduction for anyone.

Worth the Agony to Read and Understand

I've had this book for some time now. I purchased a laptop back last November with Windows 8 on it. I did not like Win 8 at all, at first. So I cheated and got one of those "looks like Win 7" desktops. But then I did upgrade to Windows 8.1 as soon as it was released and decided I'd learn the operating system because that's (probably) the future. The text helped me a lot. It IS easy to follow. You've just got to be patient. I just finished building my 2014 gaming PC (I've been a PC gamer since the late 80s and build a new one every year) and I bought Windows 8.1 Professional for my operating system. I feel comfortable with 8.1 now and you will too after spending the 80 to 100 hands-on hours on the keyboard and mouse over a period of months to get really comfortable with it, as I did! The Step by Step book is great; the time spent to learn Windows 8.1 isn't, but it's necessary, like taking medicine that you know is good for you, but you don't like the taste. Have fun, heh, heh.

Dr. Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, and in more widely accessible forums, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune. Dr. Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.
