The book Jazzmen (1939) claimed New Orleans as the birthplace of jazz and introduced the legend of Buddy Bolden as the “First Man of Jazz.” Much of the information that the book relied on came from a highly controversial source: Bunk Johnson. He claimed to have played with Bolden and that together they had pioneered jazz.

Johnson made many recordings talking about and playing the music of the Bolden era. These recordings have been treated with skepticism because of doubts about Johnson’s credibility. Using oral histories, the Jazzmen interview notes, and unpublished archive material, this book confirms that Bunk Johnson did play with Bolden. This confirmation, in turn, has profound implications for Johnson’s recorded legacy in describing the music of the early years of New Orleans jazz.

New Orleans jazz was different from ragtime in a number of ways. It was a music that was collectively improvised, and it carried a new tonality―the tonality of the blues. How early jazz musicians improvised together and how the blues became a part of jazz has until now been a mystery. Part of the reason New Orleans jazz developed as it did is that all the prominent jazz pioneers, including Buddy Bolden, Bunk Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Johnny Dodds, and Kid Ory, sang in barbershop (or barroom) quartets. This book describes in both historical and musical terms how the practices of quartet singing were converted to the instruments of a jazz band, and how this, in turn, produced collectively improvised, blues-inflected jazz, that unique sound of New Orleans.

McCullough came through yet again!!!!! What an expansion to end the nearly 2 years of a wonderfully in depth narrative skirmish based wargame. As a terrain builder in general frostgrave hit close to the heart from the beginning, but because of this author in particular i will continue to purchase osprey products for ages to come.

About the Author
Narlikar graduated from Banaras Hindu University, India. He then studied mathematics at Cambridge University, graduating with the highest honors and the Tyson Medal for Astronomy. He continued in Cambridge, obtaining a PhD and then the Sc.D. degree. He was a founder staff member of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy in Cambridge in 1966 and in 1988 set up and became director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, India.

In his forward to the first edition of “An Introduction to Cosmology” by Professor Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, Sir Fred Hoyle avers that this work of Narlikar’s is “important” both for the student and the “practiced expert.” A “masterpiece of clarity” this well structured book is divided into twelve chapters each containing its own sub-sections and a series of exercises for the reader to perform. Perhaps the most salient, and indeed, refreshing aspect of this work is that it does not blindly accept big bang cosmology as a “given” but renders consideration to the steady state model as a way of accounting for cosmological phenomena. The association between Hoyle and Narlikar is shown in the subsection “The Hoyle-Narlikar cosmologies” of Chapter 8 entitled “Alternative cosmologies.” The Steady State Theory and the quasi Steady State Theory are given due consideration in subsections 9.2 and 9.10 respectively of Chapter 9. In subsection 9.13.2 ( pps. 354 – 358 ), Narlikar explains the Hoyle-Wickramasinghe alternative to the conventional account of the micro-wave background radiation, the latter of which claims that this phenomenon is a remnant of the Big Bang, but which is accounted for by Hoyle and Wickramasinghe as emanating from metalic vapours condensing into whiskers. This book is not intended for the lay reader, but rather for advanced students and upwards and presumes a knowledge of various mathematical disciplines on the part of the reader.

Jayant Narlikar's `Introduction to Cosmology' has a simple enough title, but do not be deceived. This is a graduate-level textbook on one of the most difficult subjects around--mathematical, theoretical explorations of large-scale universal structures.
If, as Stephen Hawking once said, for every equation in the book, you lose half your readership, I would calculate (just off the top of my head) that only a dozen people have read this book! Actually, to be serious, this book presupposes a knowledge of calculus (differential equations, vector analysis, Fourier series, etc.) and assumes a fairly extensive knowledge of physics (thermodynamics, electromagnetic theory, atomic structure, fluid dynamics).
This is intended as a text book for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level student, and to that end, it has problems, most of which are computational in nature.
`It is usual to find cosmology appearing at the end of a text on general relativity, introduced more as an appendage than as a subject in its own right. Perhaps this is one reason why cosmology still stands apart from the rest of astronomy, where it really belongs. The astronomer tends to regard cosmology as a playground for general relativists rather than a logical extension of extragalactic astronomy.'
Narlikar introduces general relativistic theory as a tool rather than a subject, for use in understanding the geometrical principles applied to cosmology. He continues forward to use standard models (Friedmann) of cosmology as solutions to Einstein's equations, before progressing to discussing the physical properties of cosmology, including galactic evolution (structure, kinematics and dynamics--one could refer here then to Milhaus and Binney's work on the same), particle physics and early universe issues.
From here, Narlikar progresses to some non-standard cosmological constructions, including anisotropic cosmologies, steady state theories and cosmologies that might correspond to the Mach principle (although, as the name non-standard would indicate, these are fringe, or sometimes, older theories, which are largely discredited, but science must look to them as they occasionally give insight into observations). This, as an introduction, is not exhaustive, and does not get into cosmological models such as Alfven & Klein's matter-antimatter symmetry, the Einstein-Cartan cosmologies, or Milne's kinematic relativity, or the ideas of Segal or McCrea.
From here Narlikar ends the book with discussion of observational cosmology, exploring the implications of local observations (such as background microwave radiation that permeates the universe, a discovery of Penzias and Wilson at Bell Telephone Laboratories), the Hubble Constant and redshift issues, and quasars (do they or do they not fit standard models of cosmology and scientific principles currently known?).
`By claiming to describe the universe as a whole, cosmology transcends the realms of all other branches of science. Any conclusions about the universe are bound to be profound and hence must be drawn with caution. This caution is often missing in statements about cosmology. All too often the investigator (whether a theoretician or an observer) is tempted to mistake the model of the universe for the real thing. Categorical remarks about the state of the universe are often found upon closer examination to be model-dependent. Firm claims about observations of the universe have had to be withdrawn later when a better assessment of the observational error became possible.'
In conclusion, Narlikar gives an brief summary of the cases for and against standard cosmological models, and a glimpse into future research, which will be aided as observational tools become more sensitive.
This is a science text book, and thus is rather dry and straightforward in presentation. But as a tool for the high-end astronomer/astrophysicist, it is a valuable work.

Chapman, author of the longstanding megaseller The Five Love Languages, uses his years of marriage counseling and leading marriage seminars as the basis for his thesis that marriages repeatedly go through periods that can be characterized by the seasons of the year. He begins by describing winter, times when marriages are marked by "coldness, harshness, and bitterness." Spring is "where most marriages begin," while summer is filled with fun. He compares an autumn marriage to "the falling of the leaves." Chapman offers detailed explanations of the emotions, attitudes and actions of the marriage seasons as well as the pros and cons of each. The book's second section provides seven strategies to enhance or change the marriage seasons, from dealing with past failures and speaking your spouse's love language to "maximizing differences" and becoming a positive influence. Too shallow and cliché

This book shows how marriages can go through different seasons and at different times. It includes some tips for working through the rough seasons of fall and winter and maintaining growth in spring and summer seasons. The analogy of seasons works and the examples are clear. Many stories are included from his marriage counselling practice, but they lacked depth. I found his incessant referrals to his own publications about love-languages a bit off-putting. Overall, this book was a bit shallow and too cliché sometimes, but it reads easily and if you skim it you won't miss a lot. A better option for those looking for Christian marriage counselling advice would be "Real Marriage:The truth about Sex, Friendship, and life together" by Mark and Grace Driscoll.

"Seasons" will help you identify and give a name to how you're experiencing your marriage, with practical tips for helping to move you to the Spring or Summer of marriage. Winter=cold and harsh; Spring=new beginnings coupled with hope and excitement for the future; Summer=warmth and comfort within a life-filled relationship; Fall=the sense that things are dying between the two of you.

Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages, provides seven strategies for bringing life to a dormant or (seemingly) dead relationship. We're in just week two of our study and couples are already responding positively based on the book's content.

From a critical thinking perspective, this book is definitely worth reading!

Among the many classic strategy formulation books that I have owned & read, I treasure 'Top Management Strategy'.

One of the principal authors of this book is Benjamin Tregoe, who co-founded the Kepner-Tregor outfit around the sixties or so, with Charles Kepner. As a young engineer in the early seventies, I attended their 'Analytic Trouble Shooting' workshop. In the later years as a manager, I had read 'The Rational Manager'. Subsequently, in later years as a senior manager, I again attended their four-day 'Problem Solving & Decision Making' workshop. Their rational thinking processes from their books & workshops had often helped me tremendously in my career path from engineer to manager.

This particular book came into my hands about the time - around the mid-eighties - when I was moving into general management.

A quick glance of the table of contents of the book will give you a rough picture of why I like the book:

- Strategy & Survival;
- Taking Stock of Your Strategic IQ;
- Driving Force & the Nine basic Strategic Areas;
- The Power of the Driving Force;
- Making Strategy Happen;
- The Challenges of Startegic Management;
- Organising to Set Strategy;

In fact, many of the author's strategy ideas have influenced other strategy consultants in later years, including Michel Robert.

This particular book impresses me very much. Unlike many books on strategy formulation, this one points out that there are various paths to success. The secret is to take the route that best fits your business.

Another reader's benefits out of this book during that period of time was the 'Selected Annnotated Biliography' which eventually led me to read a good number of other classic strategy books, including Russel Ackoff's 'A Concept of Corporate Planning', Kenneth Andrews' 'The Concept of Corporate Strategy'; Igor Ansoff's 'Corporate Strategy', just to name a few.

On the whole, the author's writing is crisp, concise & clear. The book has just over 100 pages.

From a critical thinking perspective, this book is definitely worth reading. This is because, by going back to reading the classic strategy books (I call this reading backwards), like this one, you will get a better understanding of what strategy works & what strategy doesn't work.

This book makes you think on what makes you different, focusing on your one and only main Driving Force out of nine options. Long term strategy is not the same as long term planning, the first is what you want to be in the future, the second is how to get there. Being aware of your Strategy and Driving Force, allows you to focus on achiving success.

About the Author
Gary Coover has been playing concertina ever since finding a cheap dusty model in a music store many years ago. He now plays several different types of concertina, including Anglo, English and Jeffries Duet. He was the host and producer of the "Shepherd's Hey" radio program for over 15 years, and was a founding member of The Four Bricks out of Hadrian's Wall folkrock band and the Men of Houston Morris Team. Gary has spent the last several years teaching and transcribing tunes for Anglo concertina, and is one of the organizers of the Old Palestine Concertina Weekend in East Texas.

i'm learning !

After playing the accordion, piano, and keyboard for over 50+ years, I developed arthritis. My fingers made playing keys extremely difficult.. Since my fingers were a little crooked, playing an instrument with buttons seemed the way to go to continue playing music. I purchased a 30-button concertina and needed to learn from a book. I live in a rural area, so that was the only way to learn. This book's instruction starts out very basic and then build your skill level gradually. It's a great beginner's book 1

Learn an approach - not just tunes!

If you're a melody player who throws in an occasional chord, on a 30 button anglo, Gary Coover's "Harmonic Style" will open your eyes and provide interest. Like all Gary's books, it teaches an approach not just a few tunes!

Excellent book, good harmonies, fun songs.

I like this book a lot. I had been playing concertina about a month when my husband bought this for me. I figured out fairly quickly how to play a basic melody, which was fine, but it wasn’t enough. I craved harmony and accompaniment, which I knew the concertina was capable of. At first it was difficult to play the melody and then try to put the left hand in; I didn’t think I would get it. But it came together on “You Are All I Have”, a beautiful waltz in the book. This is so much more satisfying than just a single melody line.

There are plenty of traditional British and Irish tunes, but I’m really glad that the author also included “St. James Infirmary”, “The Song From Moulin Rouge”, “Over the Rainbow” (especially beautiful) and other tunes not usually played on the concertina.

And if you can’t figure out exactly how a tune goes, you can go to Youtube where Coover plays all of them. That helps a lot.

The tablature system is fairly easy and you can catch on to it. Right hand buttons are shown above the notes, left hand buttons below and the pull is indicated by a line over the top. It’s a pretty good system. The one downside, I would say, is that, then, transferring to regular music, I’m somewhat lost without the button numbers. Many of the tunes indicate both the chord name (G, C,F, Dm) and the buttons you need to push, but one tends to look at the numbers and ignore the names. I’m sure this is remedied with continued practice (or covering up the numbers?).

A very fun, helpful book, worth every penny!

Bernard McGinn is the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor Emeritus in the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. He is the author of Anti-Christ, Early Christian Mystics, The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism, and The Mystical Thought of Meister Eckhart. He lives in Chicago.
