About the Author
Tom Petruzzellis is an electronics engineer with 30 years’ experience currently working with the geophysical field equipment department at the State University of New York—Binghamton. He is also an instructor at Binghamton. He has written extensively for industry publications, including Electronics Now, Modern Electronics, QST, Microcomputer Journal, and Nuts & Volts, and is the author of four earlier books: Build Your Own Electronics Workshop; STAMP 2 Communications and Control Projects; Optoelectronics, Fiber Optics, and Laser Cookbook; and Alarm, Sensor, and Security Circuit Cookbook, all from McGraw-Hill. Mr. Petruzzellis lives in Vestal, New York.

Good hobbyist book on sensors

I own several books by the author, and like his other books, this one is focused on construction details and how each particular circuit works, along with datasheets, as opposed to theory. So if you are looking for the theory of operation on individual sensors, I think you will be disappointed. However, if you are just looking for interesting projects to build, this book is full of good ideas for circuits. The projects range from the more simple and inexpensive, such as the overtemperature alarm, to the more complex and costly advanced electronic ion chamber. If you want a good book on sensors and the theory behind them you might try Fraden's recent edition of "Handbook of Modern Sensors". I notice that Amazon does not show the table of contents so I do that here:

And I thought Electronic Projects Were Dead

Back many, many years ago, when the earth was flat and the sun went around the earth, I built a whole series of crystal radios. It seemed to me that something was lost when everything electronic became a chip and nearly everything you could imagine was made in Japan.

Now all of a sudden comes along this book. No, alas, there's not a crystal radio in it, but there's a short wave radio that's made with three chips. The complexity of the circuits is about the same as the old crystal sets. And the thrill of listening to WWV tell you the time as to be about the same as listening to the local radio station on the crystal set the first time.

There are quite a number of projects suitable for science fairs and the like. Come to think of it, building one of those electronic compasses from page 178 might be a good project even for an old kid of my advanced age.

Nice collection of sensor projects

Interesting collection of projects that require more than a simple trip to the Radio Shack to build. Each project has considerable scientific background information not just an electrical schematic and parts list. Many of the projects would make worthwhile science fair projects or other amateur science pursuits.

Ray Whittington is chairman of the accounting department at San Diego State University, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Houston. He has also been the Director of Audit Research for the AICPA Kurt Pany is a professor of accounting at Arizona State University, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He has been the Director of Audit Research for the AICPA and remains an active member of the AAA.

The Best Auditing Book Available

During the 16 years that I have taught Financial Auditing at the university level I have been constantly on the lookout for the best available book. I chose Whittington & Pany because (1) it is succinct, (2) it presents auditing concepts clearly (although the authors do sugar coat the accounting scandals of the past 20 years and fail to give credit where credit is due by naming the firms involved in them), (3) the page layout is attractive and easy to read, and most importantly (4) my students preferred it over other texts (one student told me that she chose my class after looking through the assigned texts for all of the Auditing sections, an excellent idea).

The current (15th ed.) has been brought up to date with a limited discussion of Sarbanes-Oxley and the PCAOB.

The material is obviously dry, but I found that it was possible to make my classes more interesting by incorporating newspaper accounts of the more egregious audit failures in the assigned readings, and by being honest about the arrogance, greed and stupidity that are all too typical of the accounting profession today. This practice has brought complaints by the local offices of the major firms, to which my department head replied that they are welcome to come speak to the classes to explain their side of the story. To date, they have not accepted the invitation.

Generalized Z-bus distribution factors (GZBDF) are presented to compute the active and reactive power flow on transmission lines. The interactive decision making methodology based on fuzzy set theory, in order to determine the optimal generation allocation to committed generating units, is also discussed.

About the Author
Robert M. Kaplan is a visiting professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he works with the Clinical Excellence Research Center and the Center for the Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He is also Regenstrief Distinguished Fellow at the Purdue University. He was the Chief Science Officer in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) from 2014-2016. Dr. Kaplan served as the National Institutes of Health Associate Director for Behavioral and Social Sciences and Director of the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR). Previously, he was a Distinguished Professor of Health Services and department Chair at UCLA, Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, and Professor and Chair of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, University of California, San Diego. He is a past president of several organizations, including the American Psychological Association Division of Health Psychology and the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research. Dr. Kaplan is a former Editor-in-Chief of Health Psychology and the Annals of Behavioral Medicine and author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books and over 500 articles or chapters. His work has been cited in nearly 30,000 papers; the ISI recognizes him as one of the most cited authors in his field. In 2005 he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences (now the National Academy of Medicine). Dr. Kaplan has received numerous honors, most recently American Sociological Association Policy Scientist of the Year (2012), and a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association.

Dennis P. Saccuzzo is an Emeritus professor of psychology at San Diego State University. He has been a scholar and practitioner of psychological testing for over 40 years and has numerous peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations in the field. Dr. Saccuzzo's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Mental Health, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Education, the Scottish Rite Foundation, and the U.S. armed services. He is also a California licensed psychologist and a California licensed attorney. He is board certified in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). In addition, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Assessment Psychology (ABAP) and the American Board of Forensic Medicine. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society, and Western Psychological Association for outstanding and unusual contributions to the field of psychology. Dr. Saccuzzo is the author or co-author of over 300 peer-reviewed papers and publications, including eight textbooks and 20 law manuals. He is the president and co-founder of Applications of Psychology to Law, Inc., an educational institution that applies psychological science to legal issues and the study of law.

Great textbook

This was a required text for one of my classes on psychological testing. It's really a great read. There are so many fascinating topics it covers, including very mundane and dry ones. I liked the writing style and the layout was easy to follow. I highly recommend renting this book, although I did contemplate keeping it. I'm sure I'll get more instruction on this topic in graduate school, but it definitely made a boring class pretty exceptional. It has a lot of historical content and suggestions for tests. I'm definitely a better test--taker/test-evaluator because of it. It really drills into your head reliability and validity, so it helps with experimental scientific side of psychology as well.

Poorly written. It often gives separate definitions for terms and then uses the different terms like they are synonymous. In a five dollar Grisham novel this would be kind of irritating. In a two hundred dollar text book it is completely unacceptable.

About the Author
Denis Diderot was born at Langres in eastern France in 1713, the son of a master cutler. He was originally destined for the Church but rebelled and persuaded his father to allow him to complete his education in Paris, where he graduated in 1732. For ten years Diderot was nominally a law student, but actually led a precarious bohemian but studious existence, eked out with tutoring, hack-writing and translating. His original writing began in 1746 with a number of scientific works setting out the materialist philosophy which he was to hold throughout his life. Along with his editorship of the�Encyclop�die�(1747-73), he wrote works on mathematics, medicine, the life sciences, economics, drama and painting, two plays and a novel, as well as his�Salons�(1759-81). His political writings were mainly composed around 1774 for Catherine II, at whose invitation he went to St. Petersburg. Diderot's astonishingly wide range of interests, together with his growing prediliction for the dialogue form, led to the production of his most famous works:�D'Alembert's Dream,�The Paradox of the Actor,�Jacques the Fatalist�and�Rameau's Nephew. During the latter part of his life Diderot received a generous pension from Catherine II, in return for which he bequeathed her his library and manuscripts. He died in 1784.

Very enlightening about the atmosphere in convents at that time and in that place. Reminds me of Lewis' -The Monk- which treats of the same subject and has much the same viewpoint which is that religion is all right but the church is not.

Enthralling

For me, it's definitely a page turner. I chose this book for the subject of my master's thesis in French lit. Diderot truly brings to life the sufferings of his heroine, Suzanne. The idea of forcing young women to take vows had already fallen out of favor at the time Diderot wrote this novel, so it was not as revolutionary as it may seem. All the same, Suzanne arouses the reader's sympathy and we follow her in anguish from convent to convent and long for her escape.

One caveat: You may find it disturbing that the author depicts female communities, above all religious communities, as inherently sick. This is not necessarily an accurate picture of convent life in 18th-century France, even though Diderot includes many factual details about ceremonies and daily life in religious orders.

Variety Is Still The Spice of Life

For me, this is probably the greatest Masterpiece in fiction ever written about a religious. Sure, others are free to disagree. But if this isn't your thing - forget about it! If you, like me, are intensely passionate and curious about the lives of religious as brilliantly penned here by the genius, Denis Diderot - you will not be disappointed especially at Amazon.com's incredibly great price. One of the best books ever so long as you agree to disagree that what's great to some will not be for others.

About the Author
After pursuing a degree in theoretical physics from Cambridge University, Ajahn Brahm, born in London as Peter Betts, headed off to a forest monastery in Thailand, where he studied under the famed meditation master Ajahn Chah for nine years starting in the mid 1970s. A Buddhist monk for over thirty years, he is now the abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia in Perth, and he is in demand worldwide both as a spiritual teacher and as a popular speaker. He is the author of Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung?, The Art of Disappearing, and Mindfulness, Bliss, and Beyond.

it is often funny, and sometimes ridiculous

From the mind of a Buddhist monk. It is an alternate way to look at the world around you. Told in 108 short stories, it is often funny, and sometimes ridiculous. I recommend for anyone looking for a quick read to lighten the mood.

An absolutely fabulous book. If you need a pick-me-up with short stories and a laugh, this is your book. I have since ordered three more of this wonderful Monk's books.

A Fun, Joyous & Heart-Changing Ride!!!

Such a beautiful book, and such a joyous spirit!

Full Disclosure: I recently interviewed Ajahn Brahm for our Inspire Nation Show...I think he broke the laughter-per-minute quota!!!

What an amazing soul, and he shares fantastic story after story after story to help us 'get it'...and it's hard not to after reading his book. It's a treatise for life, wrapped up in short, bite-size, entertaining stories. Each one is it's own fortune cookie telling it's own tale, and it's own lesson.

It's hard not to get sucked into the stories, and then reflect them back to our own lives...which is exactly the point. He helps us realize the grandeur, the beauty, the silliness, the ease, and the difficulty that is all around us, and helps us learn how to let it all go, and to simply be in the moment.

In that sense, Don't Worry, Be Grumpy is a very powerful tool, wrapped up with a smile.

Well-Written Introductory Text

The book contains concepts and algorithms in the first half, and then lists (I think 3) distributed operating systems in the back as case studies. The book is very readable and entertaining, assuming you've had a course (or the equivalent) in (single machine) operating systems.
This book covers all major aspects of distributed operating systems at reasonable level of depth -- you can't expect too much detail if you're going to cover all the topics.
There's no examples of "real" code in the text, I think that's a good thing. There are a number of useful algorithms discussed in each chapter.
This book is aging, and a little of the information is already dated (7 years old).

Easy to read introduction to the subject

This book is a convenient alternative to a senior-level course in operating systems. I intend to buy Tanenbaum's other operating system book. It is very easy to read and refreshingly pithy. Unlike many technical books, which fill pages by reproducing online documentation as an appendix, every page was worth printing. The examples are complete enough to understand the core concepts but assume you have the intelligence not to need excessive handholding. References are provided for readers interested in learning more about specific concepts.

The major flaw with this book is that it is now more than 15 years old. I would like to see an updated version that takes into account some of the latest operating system research. That said, the concepts are fundamental ones and cover most of the issues discussed are still relevant today.
