Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers, by Gordon Neufeld, Gabor Mate M.D.

International authority on child development Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D., joins forces with bestselling author Gabor Maté, M.D., to tackle one of the most disturbing trends of our time: Children today looking to their peers for direction—their values, identity, and codes of behavior. This “peer orientation” undermines family cohesion, interferes with healthy development, and fosters a hostile and sexualized youth culture. Children end up becoming overly conformist, desensitized, and alienated, and being “cool” matters more to them than anything else.

Hold On to Your Kids explains the causes of this crucial breakdown of parental influence—and demonstrates ways to “reattach” to sons and daughters, establish the proper hierarchy in the home, make kids feel safe and understood, and earn back your children’s loyalty and love. This updated edition also specifically addresses the unprecedented parenting challenges posed by the rise of digital devices and social media. By helping to reawaken instincts innate to us all, Neufeld and Maté will empower parents to be what nature intended: a true source of contact, security, and warmth for their children.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Like countless other parents, Canadian doctors Neufeld and Maté woke up one day to find that their children had become secretive and unreachable. Pining for time with friends, they recoiled or grew hostile around adults. Why? The problem, Neufeld and co-writer Maté suggest, lies in a long-established, though questionable, belief that the earliest possible mastery of the rules of social acceptance leads to success. In a society that values its economy over culture, the book states, the building of strong adult/child attachments gets lost in the shuffle. Multiple play dates, day care, preschool and after school activities groom children to transfer their attachment needs from adults to their peers. They become what the authors call "peer oriented." The result is that they squelch their individuality, curiosity and intelligence to become part of a group whose members attend school less to learn than to socialize. And these same children are bullying, shunning and murdering each other, as well as committing suicide, at increasing rates. The authors' meticulous exploration of the problem can be profoundly troubling. However, their candidness and exposition lead to numerous solutions for reestablishing a caring adult hierarchy. Beautifully written, this terrific, poignant book is already a bestseller in Canada.

Review
"Hold on to Your Kids blows in from Canada like a Blue Northern, bringing us genuinely new ideas and fresh perspectives on parenting. The authors integrate psychology, anthropology, neurology and their own personal and professional experiences as they examine the 'context' of parenting today. This is a worthy book with practical implications for mom and dad."
—Dr. Mary Pipher, author of Reviving Ophelia and The Shelter of Each Other

"Hold on to Your Kids is visionary book that goes beyond the usual explanations to illuminate a crisis of unrecognized proportions. The authors show us how we are losing contact with our children and how this loss undermines their development and threatens the very fabric of sociey. Most importantly they offer, through concrete examples and clear suggestions, practical help for parents to fulfill their instinctual roles. A brilliant and well written book, one to be taken seriously, very seriously."
—Peter A. Levine Ph.D., International teacher and author of the best selling books: Waking the Tiger, Healing Trauma and It Won’t Hurt Forever, Guiding Your Child through Trauma

"The thoughts and perspectives presented by the authors are informative — even inspirational — for those who choose to dedicate their lives and energy to students."
—Bulletin of the National Association of Secondary School Principals

"With original insights on parent-child attachments and how parents can restore them, this is a book for revitalizing families and rekindling the song in their children’s hearts."
—Raffi, children’s troubadour, founder of Child Honoring Society Institute

"With simple ideas and steps, this book is directed not only to parents, but to all those — educators, social workers, counselors — whose lives and work bring them into contact with children."
—Quill & Quire

"Though this is Neufeld's personal theory, Maté (Scattered Minds, When the Body Says No) has expressed his colleague's ideas in precise and hard-hitting prose that makes complex ideas accessible without dumbing them down. The result is a book that grabs hard, with the potential to hit many parents where they live."
—The Edmonton Journal

"[M]ay serve as a loud wake-up call for mothers and fathers….this one offers what many of the others do not — that rare commodity known as common sense."
—Winnipeg Free Press

"With the benefit of 30 years of research and experience, Neufeld has crafted a coherent, compelling theory of child development that will cause an immediate frisson of recognition and acceptance in its readers. His approach has the power to change, if not save, the lives of our children."
—National Post

"The authors present doable strategies to help parents help their kids. If their advice is taken to heart, there’s hope there will be more warmth and security all round."
—The Georgia Straight

Praise for Scattered Minds by Gabor Maté, M.D.
"Rare and refreshing. . . . Here you will find family stories, an accessible description of brain development and sound information. You will also find hope."
—The Globe and Mail

"An utterly sensible and deeply moving book written for a general audience."
—The Vancouver Sun

From the Inside Flap
A psychologist with a reputation for penetrating to the heart of complex parenting issues joins forces with a physician and bestselling author to tackle one of the most disturbing and misunderstood trends of our time -- peers replacing parents in the lives of our children.
Dr. Neufeld has dubbed this phenomenon peer orientation, which refers to the tendency of children and youth to look to their peers for direction: for a sense of right and wrong, for values, identity and codes of behaviour. But peer orientation undermines family cohesion, poisons the school atmosphere, and fosters an aggressively hostile and sexualized youth culture. It provides a powerful explanation for schoolyard bullying and youth violence; its effects are painfully evident in the context of teenage gangs and criminal activity, in tragedies such as in Littleton, Colorado; Tabor, Alberta and Victoria, B.C. It is an escalating trend that has never been adequately described or contested until Hold On to Your Kids. Once understood, it becomes self-evident -- as do the solutions.
Hold On to Your Kids will restore parenting to its natural intuitive basis and the parent-child relationship to its rightful preeminence. The concepts, principles and practical advice contained in Hold On to Your Kids will empower parents to satisfy their children's inborn need to find direction by turning towards a source of authority, contact and warmth.

"Something has changed. One can sense it, one can feel it, just not find the words for it. Children are not quite the same as we remember being. They seem less likely to take their cues from adults, less inclined to please those in charge, less afraid of getting into trouble.Parenting, too, seems to have changed. Our parents seemed more confident, more certain of themselves and had more impact on us, for better or for worse. For many, parenting does not feel natural. Adults through the ages have complained about children being less respectful of their elders and more difficult to manage than preceding generations, but could it be that this time it is for real? -- from Hold On to Your Kids

I struggled with the application of the concept of unconditional love. Until this book
By Charles E. Abrahamsen
I'm a physician. An M.D. I've raised 3 children, ages 33, 30, and 28. I've struggled through multiple drug abuse with one child, and gross insecurity in 2 others. Although I have been a believer for several years in unconditional love, I struggled with the application in my relationships. Until this book. A parenting book that explains unconditional acceptance. With the book half-finished, convicted of its truth, and with tears in my eyes, I began practicing unconditional acceptance with my children several months ago as i slowly digested the remainder of the book. The rewards, especially with my child who was a drug addict for 14 years, have been nothing short of miraculous. If you buy only one book on parenting in your life buy this one.

Life Changing, Saved our teen!
By E. Tallman
I'm so happy to review this book because it absolutely changed my life and my daughter's life forever! I will be honest with you and tell you that I was at my wit's end. My 13 year old, who used to be a sweet kid became constantly defiant and depressed at home. The kid who obviously loved me, I'm a really cool mom, now ignored me and rolled her eyes. Her grades were suffering and she began stitching into her skin during school. This is when someone sews shapes into their skin with a needle and thread. So I got this book.

I read the book very quickly because it resonated so strongly with all I was going through. Our society values peer influence so highly and at such a superficial level that we are losing our kids to isolation and hopelessness disguised by technology and unhealthy friendships.

I pulled my daughter out of school in her last semester of 7th grade. This meant that she would have to repeat 7th grade and be a year behind. As a single mother with her and a baby, as well as a full-time career I committed to homeschool her. We worked out a strange schedule of night and weekend study focused on real life skills and developing her values system. She was indignant...at first. After the first two weeks things started to ease. She began applying herself more, she softened, started taking great love and responsibility with her sister and with our home. I followed the advice of the book and rebuilt our relationship and the tenderness we have for each other. She was honest with me! She broke down and told me about all her fears and walls.

The girl that just wanted to be on the internet or texting in bed was now going to the gym several times a week, going for walks with the kids around the neighborhood, volunteering to help younger students learn to read and really working on improving our family relationships. She stopped yelling at me and ignoring me!! She reached a healthy weight, she was way too skinny.

During that one school year we did two years of work and caught her up. She entered high school today, right on schedule! She held my hand as we drove to the bus stop. She was excited about meeting new kids and really applying herself at school. This week she received an award for her volunteer service over the past year. Also, on a daily basis, I have people tell me what a remarkable and intelligent child I have. Last year, she was depressed and aloof, people were concerned about her.

Reading this book led me to make a very difficult decision that I thought was absolutely beyond my capacity as a mother. I believe if I hadn't put her first and done everything I could to get her away from her unhealthy friendships that I would've lost her forever and her academic possibilities and life possibilities would have suffered severely. No one agreed that I was doing the right thing! (The school, her father, my mother, no one understood why I needed to this.) This book gives practical step-by-step instructions to get your kids back from unhealthy destructive behaviors that are becoming more and more prevalent as a result of our current culture. If you are losing your child people act fast and be brave. It was the best decision I ever made.

I recommend to read this when you have a little baby
By Olga
A MUST HAVE in today's society and raising children. Very helpful for understanding today's problem with peer orientation, a problem that is not named literally but is there. I recommend to read this when you have a little baby, the sooner the better because dealing with a teenager obsessed with his smartphone and peer group is unimaginable. Thanks to this book (and , Naomi Aldort's Raising our Children Raising ourselves, Bolwby's and Harry Harlow's experiments, John Holt's books) we decided to carry our children in baby carrier, sleep with them in family bed (as Gordon mentions, the first attachment is the physical, don't recommend to skip that) and also homeschool/unschool! For us all - the best decision and raise we ever made. For people interested in this I recommend also Naomi Aldort's set of 7CDs Trusting Our Children, Trusting Ourselves - for Homeschooling (sometimes used from 14dollars!). I can't after reading these materials ever give children in daycare or public school. There is no way back, but it is very very helpful also to understand your own person and childhood.

Tubelo's Green Fire: Mythos, Ethos, Female, Male & Priestly Mysteries of the Clan of Tubal Cain, by Shani Oates

This book explores historical and contemporary ideas of witchcraft through the perspective of the Clan of Tubal Cain - a closed Initiatory group aligned to the Shadow Mysteries within the Luciferian stream. As students of arte we mediate the ancestral stream, teaching through practice with the sacred tenets of Truth, Love and Beauty. The Word is thus manifest in deed and vision. "A driving thirst for knowledge is the forerunner of wisdom. Knowledge is a state that all organic life posesses, wisdom is the reward of the spirit, gained in the search for knowledge. Truth is variable - what is true now, will not be true tomorrow, since the temporal truths are dependent upon ethics and social mores - therefore wisdom is possibly eternal Truth, untouched by man's condition. So we must come to the heart of the People, a belief that is based upon Eternity, and not upon social needs or pressures - the 'witch' belief then is concerned with wisdom, our true name, then is the wise people and wisdom is our aim." - Robert Cochrane 1931-1966

Tubelo's Green Fire -- "Not For The Feint-Hearted"
By Maureen Duffy
This book, it must be said, boasts an innate difference from the many current books which propound the supposed "mysteries" of various traditions of Witchcraft, Wicca, and other arcanae. In a word, this book makes no promises, offers no answers, fills no loopholes, catches no Lapwings. The work is a dance between Dog and Deer, Deer, and Bird, Bird and Dog*, one in which no one loses a life, questions are offered to many an answer, and nothing is decided by the dance except the certainty on the part of the reader of the absolute necessity of such works in the hermetic library, works which offer philosophia rather than prestidigitation. The quotation above, "not for the feint-hearted", is taken from the Preface, and I was immediately taken by the subtlety of the not-misspelled adjective, and became aware very soon thereafter that the phrase bore as many levels of insight and layers of meaning as does the book itself. The feint-hearted, those who are looking for quick tricks of the hermetic hand with which to baffle and amaze the once-born, will find no fodder here. The book is Craft in its totality, fully intending to cloak, as my mentor Joseph Bearwalker Wilson was wont to say, "a method, wrapped in a mystery", hoping that the sincere and insightful reader will be able to grasp at the cloak of the Mystery wrapped in the Method.

Like a well-respected predecessor, The White Goddess by Robert Graves, the book is written in a style which can only be described as mythopoesy. The Preface is a highly literate, fully annotated and daringly speculative look at the origins of both the concepts of dualism in religious thought and the roots of Craft itself. The language and content here does presuppose that the reader has something of a background in academia, with an emphasis on anthropology, philosophy of religion, and literary history. Moving from this into the content of the chapters is like taking a voyage of discovery after a year spent studying the atlas. One will "land" in a chapter very like the intellectual tourist wishing to spend a year or more at each docking point and thoroughly familiarize hirself with the new territory. Each chapter in turn, beginning with one which does indeed discuss, exemplify and seek to source the reader in the aforementioned "mythopoesy", and moving through the Mysteries as accessed by the Clan of Tubal Cain, is contemplative, thought-provoking, shatteringly literate, and fully functional as a guide, whilst forbearing from revealing anything of the arcanum which must be fully and personally encountered in personal practice of the Witch.

WARNING: This is not a "beginning Witchcraft" kind of a book. This book is for those whose feet are already securely seated on the Path, those who wish to have a hermetic glimpse of another angle of the Thicket. This book is most suited to long and contemplative study, perhaps with academic tools at hand with which to explore the many side-paths referred to in the text, but always knowing that what one is seeing is only a glimpse of the tail-feathers of the Bird, a tantalizing glance between the horns of the Deer, a swift pat in passing at the questing Dog. The author, Shani Oates, Maid of the Clan of Tubal Cain, has enriched her Legacy and done more than justice to the ethos of the teachings of Robert Cochrane as illuminated by Evan John Jones. This book is, without doubt, one of the most intriguing and illuminating books I have had the good fortune of perusing in many years. But it is not a how-to, not a go-to, not an encyclopedia. It's a voyage of discovery. Enjoy the trip!

Process and Progress
By Shani Oates
First of all, thank you, to you the reader having interest in my debut book. Secondly, allow me to ease any understandable concerns regarding the status of this book. The publishers have NOT limted the print run, nor is it yet out of print. It is freely available both on and off-line.

This book was written primarily to express the elegance and eloquence of a magical, transformative stream within the broader praxes of British Traditional Craft. Presented in contemporary style, its wisdoms are hoary, inculcating curiosity for the Mysteries discussed therein coupled with a desire for answers to these often subtle yet enigmatic patterns of Fate and Destiny.

Book Of Vision Quest, by Steven Foster

Blending numerous heritages, wisdoms, and teachings, this powerfully wrought book encourages people to take charge of their lives, heal themselves, and grow.

Movingly rendered, The Book of the Vision Quest is for all who long for renewal and personal transformation. In this revised edition—with two new chapters and added tales from vision questers—Steven Foster recounts his experiences guiding contemporary seekers. He recreates an ancient rite of passage—that of “dying,” “passing through,” and “being reborn”—known as a vision quest. A sacred ceremony that culminates in a three-day, three-night fast, alone, in a place of natural power, the vision quest is a mystical, practical, and intensely personal journey of self-knowledge.

Vision Alone, Wisdom Apart
By Curtis L. Wilbur
There is a mountain we all must climb. Some of us never see the mountain. Some of those that do see cannot make the climb. This is a very personal collection of stories of individual journeys - journeys that attempt to solidify the bond between the body and the mind. It is also a universal pattern, as we begin to see in "Vision Quest", that we who call ourselves "human", must find and connect with our personal mythos. Always different in its instantiation, always the same in its requirement. And always there.
This book is published by Fireside Books, a part of the Simon&Schuster empire. They are also the publisher of "Coyote Medicine", which I panned pretty heavily in a review last year for being unsubstantial and largely anecdotal in its evidences. "Vision Quest" is also anecdotal, which means that Foster and Little could have cut and paste, publishing those stories they saw fit to tell their side, and leave out the rest. However, there are two things that are quite different about their style which makes this book a smashing success. First, they held nothing back, so far as I can tell. Some of their customer's journeys weren't success stories at all. Some were clear failures, and some were still just hanging on to bare existence. Their message still came through. The second point is that these stories can only be told in this fashion. Science is not clearly in the picture here - skirting the edge. There's no way one can publish statistics on this topic, saying "of so many voyagers, x percent achieved total succees". No, this book is about mythology. And as false as the stories are that comprise mythology, their lessons are deeply engrained in the body - no, the spirit - of every one who dares to be human.
Reading "Kinds of Minds", by Daniel Dennett, may make some of what I speak of more clear. Humans differ from other animals because of our recursive patterns of thought. This recursion - the ability to subject the mind to analysis by that same mind - is both a blessing (in that it helped with our survival), and a curse (in that endless recursion into a black hole of despair is a definite possibility). Your mythos is the terminator to this endless analysis. Some call this "God". Some of us have no name for it, but all the same, it must be there. Foster and Little recognize this, and at the same time, they are quite sensitive to the lives on the edge of our grand society who need, but do not have, this connection.
Knowing full well that the connection itself does not assure a comfortable place, they nonetheless have created a venue for people to make this voyage of self discovery. This book is a brief recounting of many of those voyages. It is also an invitation to the rest of us to follow wherever that path leads.
Read this book.

Reviving lost parts of humanity
By Stephen C. Byrne
This book clearly speaks to people who increasingly find something missing - either through a tiny crack or glaring hole - in their life; perhaps direction, karma, a clearer sense of what this is all about, whatever you want to call it.
I only considered a vision quest a sci-fi novelty, something good for stories, not real life. This book changed that perception forever. The author describes the process and the results many people found as they went through thier own vision quest.
I plan on going on one in 2001 through a related organization. This book clearly communicated a possible solution to that 'missing something' many people feel these days.
The only minor criticism I have is that in my opinon, the authors poetic, mystic and self-agrandizing descriptions and metaphors go a little overboard - a little heavy-handed for my taste... perhaps that's only since I haven't been on a vision quest, I don't know. This in no way diminishes the clear and no-holes-barred message delivered straight and to the point for the majority of the book. Don't let this stop you - it's worth every penny and more...

Five Stars, Excellent Book
By Michael J. Shaw
I really liked this book. I keep having to re-buy it because I keep giving my copy away.

It wasn't too preachy or loaded with new-age hooey, and the different experiences related gave me good ideas for my own vision quests. I've done two in Colorado and one in Arizona at times in my life when I really needed to get into the wilderness and re-orient myself on what truly mattered and was important to my past, present, and future.

The book helped me articulate some of the most important questions to ask myself, and how to keep the experience meaningful but not cluttered to the point of distraction. Now I go out with sleeping bag, tarp, water purifier and bottles, journal, pens, whistle, lighter, map, compass, and a harmonica. That's it. My next VQ will be in Idaho.

I've guided others along the journey as well, and am getting ready to do so again soon. The rockpile method of communication described in the book is unbeatable in terms of allowing people to stay in touch and safe without treading on one another's private experiences. Be well, and be safe! Eat the view...

Returning to Eden’s prehistoric sci-fi saga that stole the hearts of readers everywhere.
‘I’m scared’, Fly had said. He was never scared. He was her hero. Her rugged hero made up from all the romance books she’d read. Big, bold and beautiful—in an alien kind of way.

Jenny's from Earth. Fly's from Itor. By a quirk of fate they met. She tamed him and they fell in love. They live idyllic lives in a protected corner of the world away from the wolf-like people and savage tribes of Neanderthals, and when Jenny discovers she’s pregnant they feel things can’t get any more perfect.

But things are changing outside their little kingdom. The wolf-people are disbanding and someone, or something, appears to be hunting the Neanderthals. Fly makes provisions to protect all that’s dear to him, but then he just doesn’t return home. Jenny knows he’s alive somewhere, but alone with her baby daughter, is she equipped to deal with the new horror that awaits her?

Page-turner sequel! Loved It!
By history repeats
I absolutely loved Eden and Hunted did not disappoint. This book was a page turner from beginning to end. Ms. Wise writes with the kind of plot suspense and atmospheric danger that you are never sure if she is going to kill off a major character, including the hero or the heroine. There is so much fast-paced action in the second half of the book that I felt a little worn out when I finished it.

The natives take a major role in this sequel, and it takes a talented writer to imbue semi-verbal creatures with so much characterization that they feel like friends and enemies. Plus, we finally learn a lot more about Fly's fascinating backstory. As in Eden, Ms. Wise has very rich descriptions of the landscape, making it a character in this book, too. Fly and Jenny are basically explorers and settlers, and their new world plays an appropriately sinister and threatening role.

This book was great from beginning to end, and a perfect conclusion to the Eden story. I liked Fly and Jenny so much that I will miss them. They were great characters who solidified their roles as a couple in the first half and then were tested and challenged on so many fronts as individuals in the second half that Ms. Wise left you prepared for their possible demise. It was a breathtaking adventure!

A great sequel.
By loulouc
LOVE this story. This book is the long awaited sequel to her book Eden, and it is wonderful. This book can be read alone I think, but it would be so much more satisfying to read the other first. This book picks up and we read about the native life on the planet and their interaction with them.
We also learn about Fly's background and more about his species.
It is a great story.

Great conculsion to a wonderful story
By Wanda
A great ending to a pair of book with really great writing and really unique characters. I am kind of sad to see this series end. Their are so may different avenues that the author could probably take but it wouldn't be the same. I congratulate the author om some really fun adventures in this book. Fun for me not so much for the characters. Enjoy/

The Bald Soprano and Other Plays: The Bald Soprano; The Lesson; Jack, or the Submission; The Chairs, by Eugene Ionesco

The leading figure of absurdist theater and one of the great innovators of the modern stage, Eugne Ionesco (1909-94) did not write his first play, The Bald Soprano, until 1950. He went on to become an internationally renowned master of modern drama, famous for the comic proportions and bizarre effects that allow his work to be simultaneously hilarious, tragic, and profound. As Ionesco has said, “Theater is not literature. . . . It is simply what cannot be expressed by any other means.”

Review
Drama in 11 scenes by Eugene Ionesco, who called it an "antiplay." It was first produced in 1950 and published in 1954 as La Cantatrice chauve; the title is also translated The Bald Prima Donna. The play, an important example of the Theater of the Absurd, consists mainly of a series of meaningless conversations between two couples that eventually deteriorate into babbling. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

Provocative surrealist theater
By A.J.
These four one-act plays of bleak absurdity and startling originality place Ionesco alongside Beckett and Pinter as one of twentieth century theater's most enigmatic iconoclasts.
"The Bald Soprano" begins as a seemingly placid comedy on proper English manners, but then weird things happen -- irregular clock chimes, contradictions with no logical basis, non-sequiturs -- which build to a crescendo of chaos like a dissonant string quartet. Corrupting every convention of traditional drama, defying every expectation of the audience, it is exactly the "anti-play" its subtitle suggests.
In "The Lesson," an aging professor's excessive zeal for a particular subject, made incomprehensibly esoteric by his own obsessive study of it, is the downfall of many a hapless student.
"Jack" is the age-old story of a boy who disappoints his family by not wanting to marry the girl they have selected for him, but, like a surrealist painting, the proceedings are rendered grotesque by nonsensical lines and colors. As though to accentuate the banality of the underlying plot, the actors go to dramatic extremes as if they were acting out a "real" drama.
But I feel that the most engaging of the four plays is "The Chairs," in which two actors not only must play a nonagenarian couple hosting a roomful of people who have assembled for a lecture, but must pantomime the presence of the (invisible) guests. The bitterly ironic (and very funny) "lecture" given at the end affirms MacBeth's notion that life truly is a tale told by an idiot.
I think these plays are more about form than content, as Ionesco is experimenting with visual and verbal imagery and challenging the audience's sense of comfort with the theater, intending to evoke unusual and unpleasant emotions like awkwardness or embarrassment. To get the most out of reading the plays, it is best not to read them as literature but to visualize them being performed, paying close attention to every detail in the stage directions and the instructed mannerisms of the characters.

Impossible is nothing
By H. Schneider
I sort of grew up with Ionesco. This crazy Romanian turned Frenchman with his absurd stage plays, the Bald Soprano and stuff like that, was synonym for art trash in yahoo speak. He wrote like abstract painters painted. Good honest citizens detested that kind of stuff and complained when theatres and museums who were subsidized by public funds played or diplayed it. Ionesco was the equivalent of Picasso in my home town red neck cultural perspective. (Please note that I am German, not Kentuckian.
Apologies to Kentucky, should I have said Oklahoma? Anyway, German backwoods are no different.)
Then I take a big leap with the time machine. No encounters with Ionesco since maybe the 60s. Plenty with Picasso though, who became one of my heroes (and one of my favorite writers, P. O'Brian, wrote a good biography, which I reviewed here, but I pulled the review out since nobody was interested).
And now my daughter, who is doing her IB with drama as elective subject, chose The Lesson for her graduation stage production. I read it first and told her she is crazy. Nobody can play this mad professor who kills his private students after endless absurd monologues on philology (which leads to calamity, as the maid says). As any self-respecting 18 year old would, she ignored my ignorant advice and did it anyway. She found a fantastic actress to do the mad old professor, a 16 year old American Chinese girl who must have been born for this part. And perfect fits for the pupil and the maid as well.
I have not had so much fun in a theatre for a long time. Hail to old Ionesco! And kudos to the producer and director of the play on this day!

The paradox of tragedy
By JEFF SPRUILL
I am directing the Bald Soprano soon. One of my major battles has been this: How do I translate Ionesco's ideas to my audience. Ionesco did not write his seemingly meaningless text to be a funny piece of sensless fluff. Ionesco saw in his work a profound meaning with deep implications. He shows us six people, whose interactions with each other are completely absurd and meaningless. The characters speak to each other in endless non-sequinters and cliches. They cannot communicate with one another. Their inablity to communicate unltimatally leads to conflict and the end, not only of the play, but of the lives of these characters (made alive only as long as the play lasts) the audience laughs at this. They look at these characters on the stage and think, "What aweful people they are." What they don't realize is that they are laughing at themselves. It is infact they who scurry about the earth speaking to one another with meaningless words, and in cliches. They are trapped in a world of political correctness, and useless sayings. They don't communicate, but say only what they are expected to say. They fight about things that have no eternal significance, and they fight until it is impossible for either side to win. The Bald Soprano shows us ourselves. The tragedy of the Bald Soprano is that we laugh at it, because we except that our relationships and indeed our existance is laughable. The tragedy is that we don't even know that we are laughing at ourselves, because we are blind to our own faults. WE don't allow ourselves to see that we are talking without speaking, and fighting without winning. The difficulty to the director is: How do we make the audience see Ionesco's point. If we made it completely obvious, than it would lose it's comic value, for who could laugh if they knew how desperate their circumstance was. And if they don't laugh, than the play loses it's tragedy. It would be simple if Ionesco had given us some text at the end to wrap it up, and tell the audience the meaning. But Ionesco didn't see the need to. To him, it was not possible for humanity to change. Even if he had made the audience understand that the characters were showing them themselves, they would not have been willing to change. To IOnesco, the world was headed on a downward spiral, so we night as well laugh about it, even if it is at our own expense.

Selected Poems of Langston Hughes: A Classic Collection of Poems

With the publication of his first book of poems, The Weary Blues, in 1926, Langston Hughes electrified readers and launched a renaissance in black writing in America. The poems Hughes wrote celebrated the experience of invisible men and women: of slaves who "rushed the boots of Washington"; of musicians on Lenox Avenue; of the poor and the lovesick; of losers in "the raffle of night."They conveyed that experience in a voice that blended the spoken with the sung, that turned poetic lines into the phrases of jazz and blues, and that ripped through the curtain separating high from popular culture. They spanned the range from the lyric to the polemic, ringing out "wonder and pain and terror-- and the marrow of the bone of life."

The poems in this collection were chosen by Hughes himself shortly before his death in 1967 and represent work from his entire career, including "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," "The Weary Blues," "Still Here," "Song for a Dark Girl," "Montage of a Dream Deferred," and "Refugee in America."It gives us a poet of extraordinary range, directness, and stylistic virtuosity.

Hughes is Pure
By Zachary J. Manes
I had read several Hughes poems before buying this book, but I will admit that I had no grasp on the extent of his talent. These vivid poems were chosen by Hughes personally before his death in 1967.
They do so well to paint a picture of the time he lived -- of the blues, of love, of passion, of choices. He writes about faith and protest in a way that will move you.
I have read all of the poems exactly as they are placed in the book several times. I think I keep going back to them because this is poetry free of pretense -- it is grounded in reality and in sorrow.
Independent of age, of your ethnicity, and of your literary grasp, you will enjoy these poems. Simple and superb -- read them out loud.

Dreams Deferred
By booknblueslady
Langston Hughes wrote poetry of exquisite pain and beauty throughout his life. His poetry can be sparse and rhythmic. It evinces visions of cities, the south, churches and deep muddy rivers.
Hughes touches on every subject important to life in 20th century America: family, friends, race, religion, love, music, prejudice and poverty. Each poem sparingly provides an image in words. Together these poems represent the great work of a true artist of the American Poetry.
One of his most popular and poignant poems is Harlem. It contains such beauty in his phrase - "a dream deferred" and such power in his words or does it explode?
I recommend this highly to anyone interested in modern poets and poetry.

He, too, sang America
By Michael J. Mazza
"Selected Poems of Langston Hughes" is a rich selection from several decades of this poet's work. Hughes (1902-1967) is a poet of many moods and voices. His work is at times mournful, humorous, sensuous, or ironic. Many poems capture the rhythms of African-American vernacular speech. A number of narrative poems tell stories of Black life, and a number of his best poems feature female speakers. He also writes poems of social protest that deal with the anti-Black violence that has plagued the United States for so much of its history.
The poems in this book are divided into several sections. One of my favorite such sections, "Feet of Jesus," contains poems which evoke the prayers, preaching, and religious songs of African-American churches. "Madam to You" contains a number of poems in which Alberta K. Johnson tells her story. A strong-willed entrepreneur who often challenges authority figures, "Madam" is one of the most delightful characters in African-American literature.
The other sections of the book contain many of Hughes' most memorable poems: the sensuous "Midnight Dancer" ("Lips / Sweet as purple dew"), "Mother to Son" ("Life for me ain't been no crystal stair"), "Theme for English B" ("I am the only colored student in my class"), and "I, Too" ("I, too, sing America. / I am the darker brother").
The lines I quoted from "I, Too" may call to mind Walt Whitman's great American poem "Leaves of Grass." Indeed, I consider Hughes to be one of the great 20th century poetic heirs of Whitman, and "Selected Poems" is a magnificent testament to Hughes' passion and vision.
