An upsurge in violence between Uyghur and Han in China’s far western region of Xinjiang has gained increased media and academic attention in recent years as was evidenced in the July 2009 riots. Numbering over eight million, the Uyghur are China’s fifth-largest minority nationality, and their mounting aspiration for obtaining more autonomy has contributed to the recent ethnic conflicts in the region. This book looks at those who are seeking to preserve the Uyghur identity, and support the secession of Xinjiang from China in order to create their own independent state by exploring the global operations and sister groups of the Uyghur diaspora umbrella organization, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC). It examines the networks of the WUC, the coalitions it has formed, the strategies the organization pursues to raise public awareness about Uyghur issues around the globe, and looks at the actors that have emerged as key players in the contemporary WUC network. Further, this book shows that the Uyghur lobby is not a unified movement, but that the local groups that it consists of are highly constrained by the broader domestic politics of their host countries, a fact which has a significant impact on the lobby’s ability to realize its strategic and political ambitions. In turn, Yu-Wen Chen gauges the impact of the WUC on public opinion and policymakers in the world’s democracies, and shows how since Uyghur organizations have been given legitimacy by liberal democracies and international governmental organizations, they can no longer be considered merely splintered members of a far-flung diaspora locked in a one-sided struggle with Beijing. Indeed, Uyghur activists can and do use their hard-won legitimacy as legal migrants and asylum seekers to influence politics in their host countries.

This unique and timely study reveals how an issue concerning a Chinese minority has been catapulted onto the wider global political stage, and as such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars working on Chinese politics, the Uyghur issue, and minority and ethnic politics, social movements, human rights, and international politics more broadly.

Since C.S. Lewis himself wrote two accounts of his conversion to Christianity (one being allegorical), is there any need for another? Downing, an English professor and noted Lewis researcher, answers this question well in the course of this very thorough work. While covering the same ground as Lewis's own Surprised by Joy, Downing focuses on the interior developments in Lewis's thought rather than retelling his conversion story. This difference in intent makes for a drier tone, but it also allows for a much deeper analysis. Downing's careful research uncovers many relevant passages for Lewis's various stages of thought, particularly from unpublished letters. He convincingly shows how reflective themes from Lewis's earliest days imagination and analysis, progress and tradition, flesh and spirit were developed, challenged, held in tension and resolved. In exploring the impact of Lewis's mother's early death and his strained relationship with his father, Downing keeps closely to the primary sources. This spiritual biography will function as a series of excellent explanatory notes alongside Lewis's narrative account, giving the sort of detail that true fans delight in. A pleasant surprise awaits readers at the end of the book, as Downing abandons his unadorned tone in favor of an imaginative exploration of Lewis's actual "final" conversion. Although he admits to its speculative nature, the narrative's firm foundation in Lewis's thoughts makes it a plausible and joyful creative journey.

Over the years, a number of good biographies of Lewis, the perennially popular Christian apologist, have been published. George Sayer's Jack: A Life of C.S. Lewis is probably the least controversial of them, while A.N. Wilson's C.S. Lewis: A Biography is likely the most. This portrait by Downing (English, Elizabethtown Coll.; Planets in Peril) is unique in that it treats one aspect of Lewis's life: his conversion from atheism to Christianity. Focusing on his subject's inner journey, Downing considers the effect on Lewis of his mother's death; his estrangement from his father; the influence of a rationalist, atheistic, but well-loved mentor; his early interest in the occult and paranormal; and the trench warfare he experienced in World War I. Making use of both published and unpublished writings, Downing shows a deep understanding of Lewis and writes in a flowing style. For more than 25 years, Nicholi (psychiatry, Harvard Medical Sch.) has offered a course in which he compares the thought and life of the atheist Freud with that of Lewis as a way to consider questions about the existence of God, love, sex, and the meaning of life. Nicholi generally maintains a balanced view, letting Freud's and Lewis's words and actions speak for themselves. He examines why Freud remained an unbeliever (though not an unthinking one) and why Lewis accepted Christianity. While his sympathies obviously lie on the side of faith, Nicholi nevertheless offers a balanced view of Freud. *Starred Review* Like many other ardent Christians, C. S. Lewis--the most important and popular Christian apologist of the twentieth century--fell away from the church into which he was born and rejoined it through conversion as an adult. Since he never wrote systematically of the period between those poles of faith, Downing, matching him in clarity and congeniality, does the job. He traces Lewis' early life chronologically, discriminating its periods according to the state of Lewis' belief in God. Initially Lewis enjoyed the "ill-secured happiness" (Lewis' own characterization) of childhood, which was swept away by his mother's death and his "exile" to boarding schools in England, where he passed the by-his-lights dismal condition of boyhood, in which he learned the snobbery and atheism of his adolescence. World War I service dented his nonbeliever's armor, and he vacillated between atheism and occultism. During postwar study and early teaching, he adopted in turn philosophical idealism and pantheism, which mirrored his continued snobbery and detachment. But having adopted the family of a buddy slain in the war, he wasn't truly detached. At last he acknowledged God, "and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England." Drawing cogently upon Lewis' and his associates' writings and other recollections, Downing creates an intellectual biography that seizes and sustains interest as though it were a spellbinding suspense thriller. Intellectual Biography of The Highest Order

David Downing has achieved something quite remarkable with this book: He has succeeded in making a thoroughly researched, philosophically-heavy, intellectual biography an engrossing read.
This is by no means a CS Lewis biography. It is, rather, a biography of Lewis' mind before, during and immediately after his conversion to a belief in Christ. Downing explores several avenues of Lewis' philosophical quest, none more so than his unceasing pursuit of "Joy." This pursuit leads Lewis, and the reader, through all stages of Lewis' intellectual and religious development--from atheistic materialism to the occult to philosophical Idealism to pantheism and finally to Christ. Along the way, the reader is introduced to many of Lewis' spiritual, philosophical and intellectual mentors.
This could have easily (almost predictably) become a dry, excruciatingly dull narrative with all the readability of a poorly-written freshman philosophy text. Instead, it is a true page-turner as Downing relates Lewis' intellectual pursuit of the aforementioned concepts. One-by-one the philosophical challengers to Christianity are discovered, honestly scrutinized, shown be intellectually wanting, and ultimately rejected.
Don't be put off by the centrality of philosophical discussion in this book. It is an easy read and it is actually quite fun to see how Lewis used his monumental intellect to punch irreparable holes in philosophical concepts considered sacrosanct by preening, self-important atheistic egotists. Though an atheist during his teens and twenties, Lewis never stopped pursuing iron-clad intellectual arguments which would quench his thirst for "Joy." His intellectual honesty never allowed him to be satisfied with answers which rested on shaky philosophical ground. And part of his restless pursuit of "Joy" was his search for a firm and unassailable theoretical foundation on which he could build a consistent belief system.
Bravo to Mr. Downing for writing this marvelous book. Perhaps no other work allows us to peer more deeply into the mind of this magnificent intellect.

Downing Delivers!

Downing does well in his concise and colorful account of C.S. Lewis' progression to faith -- thus leading to a joyful life. Primarily Downing is helpful in allowing the reader a glimpse into the patient ascension of Lewis to discovering an intimate and substantial faith in Christianity. The reader is not simply walking blindly in this telling of Lewis' conversion, but is led by Downing with a careful examination of Lewis' own thoughts through this spiritual and thoughtful pilgrimage. Thus, Downing allows Lewis to speak for himself on many accounts through highlighting his own letters; and the writings of others close to Lewis, including his brother. The reader will also recieve a luminous lesson on 19th and 20th century thought; they will be intoduced to Rationalism, Romanticism, Idealism, Modernity and a host of other worldviews and religious expressions Lewis engaged in his early adulthood.
This book affirms the reason why so many find solace and stimulation from this Christian literary giant. Lewis' genuine and ardent quest for faith should not be overlooked and can only command respect and admiration.

There and back again--CS Lewis's spiritual journey

I'm not quite sure how to classify this book. It's not exactly a biography, because it does not attempt a thorough inspection of CS Lewis's life. It's not literary criticism, because it mentions most of Lewis's works only in passing. I suppose this book is rather an examination of the various steps of CS Lewis's departure from, avoidance of, and eventual return to Christianity. In this book, Downing explores and evaluates all the stages of Lewis's philosophical and religious thought-from materialism to idealism to pantheism to Christianity, with brief stops along the way to consider spiritualism and theosophy.

Lewis's time away from Christianity was a very interesting time in his life. He toyed with many systems of belief, and struggled to come to grips with reality as he found system after system of philosophy to be flawed. Downing does a good job of exploring the influences that aided Lewis's development-his teachers, mentors, and books he read all played an important part in this. For that, at least, there is merit in this book, and Downing also uncovers a few (but they are few) details which Lewis himself leaves out in his autobiography, `Surprised by Joy.'

Anyone who has read `Surprised by Joy,' however, will find that this book is basically just a rewording of what Lewis himself said in that work. There is little in this book which cannot be gleaned from Lewis's own sketch of his early life, and Lewis's work has the added advantage of being both better written and written from his own point of view. This book provides a decent summary of Lewis's autobiography, but little more.

For the most part, Downing's insights are helpful, if not unique. The narrative is sometimes confused, with Downing jumping (for example) from a period of doubt in Lewis's life to a scene from The Chronicles of Narnia or other of Lewis's fiction which illustrates what he later came to believe on the subject. And the greatest flaw of this book comes in the last two pages of chapter 8, when Downing attempts to describe Lewis's spiritual experience while riding to a zoo with his brother. Lewis describes that something happened (though he admits he doesn't know what) on that ride, and that he believed in Christ as the son of God when he arrived at the zoo, but hadn't when he had set out for the zoo. Downing, in analyzing this experience, waxes psychological and attempts to get inside Lewis's head. The result is a flowery blurb of supposed thoughts which Lewis had, told mostly in the first person (as if Downing had access to a level of Lewis's conscious which even he, Lewis, did not have) and reeking of an attempt at literary prowess rather than narrative fidelity. Those two pages alone ruined the entire book for me.

Despite these flaws, however, this book deserves three stars for its interesting look at Lewis's Journey to Faith (as the subtitle implies). As I said, there is nothing new or groundbreaking here, and longtime fans of Lewis will find little which is unique, but this book is nevertheless merits a quick perusal.

About the Author
Maurice Sendak was born in Brooklyn, New York. He began by illustrating other authors' books for children, but the first book that he both wrote and illustrated was Kenny's Window, published in 1956. In his lifetime, he illustrated over 80 books, and received many awards, including the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are. In 1970 he was the first American to win the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator's Medal. He passed away in May 2012. Robert Graves was born in 1895 in Wimbledon, son of Alfred Perceval Graves, the Irish writer, and Amalia von Ranke. He went from school to the First World War, where he became a captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Apart from a year as Professor of English Literature at Cairo University in 1926 he earned his living by writing, mostly historical novels which include I CLAUDIUS and THE GOLDEN FLEECE. He wrote his autobiography, GOODBYE TO ALL THAT, in 1929. He translated Apuleius, Lucan, and Suetonius for the Penguin classics, and compiled the first modern dictionary of Greek mythology, THE GREEK MYTHS. He was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1961, and became an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, in 1971. He published a new edition of his COLLECTED POEMS in 1975. Robert Graves died in December 1985 in Majorca, his home since 1929.

Sendak Illustrations and the Kid Wins

This book scored a very big hit with my 5-year-old grandson and both of his parents. The kid is not as powerless as he thought, even though he's just a kid, and he gets to win. For kids who often feel like they don't have anything to say about their lives and the grownups have all the power, this is a charming, happy story. I love the illustrations, as well. My daughter and son-in-law are both working artists and Maurice Sendak is a family favorite.

The End of Rabbit Pies and Sheer Green Magic

If ever you are in need of a smile, this short children's book by Robert Graves and wonderful illustrations by Maurice Sendak will do the trick. The text is cleverly simplistic and elegant, and the amusing pictures tell it all. When Jack, an unhappy orphaned boy left in the custody of a rather dim aunt and uncle, discovers a large dusty book in the attic, he is able to redress the situation on the home front as well as curing the family dog of a dubious habit by means of a few wise and funny wishes. The last one he makes is bound to make everybody laugh with appreciation. An original and great book for people of all ages who want to grow up to be a kid.

I am 45 and I got this book (in german: das gr�ne Buch) as a gift when I was seven. I never forgot it. Once, when I was in 3rd grade, I took it to school and our (mathematics) teacher read it out loud during class. The teacher himself was touched by the book and came to me, and assured that it was a very fine book.

I appreciate both artists, Graves and Sendak.

About the Author
Fr�nzi Korner-Nievergelt has been working as a statistical consultant since 2003. Dr. Korner-Nievergelt conducts research in ecology and ecological statistics at the Swiss Ornithological Institute and oikostat GmbH. Additionally, she provides data analyses for scientific projects in the public and private sector. A large part of her work involves teaching courses for scientists at scientific institutions and private organizations.

Tobias Roth is a postdoc at the University of Basel where he teaches masters level courses in statistics for ecology and biology students. In addition, Dr. Tobias Roth is co-owner and project manager at Hintermann & Weber AG, where he is responsible for data analyses and develops analytical methods for biodiversity monitoring programs.

Stefanie von Felten has a PhD in Plant Ecology and a diploma of advanced studies in statistics. Since 2010 she works as statistician at the University Hospital Basel where she is involved in planning, analysis and publication of clinical studies. In addition, Dr. von Felten is a statistical consultant for oikostat GmbH. She has been teaching statistics in several courses for Master and PhD students at various academic institutions and for doctors and other health personnel at the Hospital.

J�r�me Gu�lat has been leading the GIS team at the Swiss Ornithological Institute for more than 6 years. He uses spatial statistics to provide guidance to applied conservation problems. He also teaches a short course on spatial and Bayesian statistics.

Bettina Almasi has a PhD in eco-physiology and ecology from the University of Zurich and a post-diploma course in applied statistics from the ETH Zurich. Dr. Almasi conducts research in stress physiology and behavioural ecology at the Swiss Ornithological Institute and works part-time as a statistical consultant at oikostat GmbH

Pius Korner-Nievergelt has a PhD in ecology, conservation biology and a post-diploma course in applied statistics both from ETH Zurich. Dr. Korner-Nievergelt works as a statistician at oikostat GmbH as well as at the Swiss Ornithological Institute for data analyses, mainly regarding ecological questions.

Not just for ecologists, not just for Bayesians

I am not an ecologist - and so, for example, I can only marvel at such intellectual pursuits as statistical modeling of sea slug's sperm volume, recounted on page 170. (That Anthes et al. (2014) paper must have had the Ig Nobel prize in the bag). However, only one chapter of “Bayesian Data Analysis in Ecology” is ecology-focused - and even that material is useful to a non-ecologist, as an example of a complex BUGS or STAN model. Nor is the book relevant just for people interested in Bayesian statistics - again, Bayesian matters account for only a small proportion of the total page count, in the book's final chapters. What I see is a gentle, nicely presented, R-illustrated intermediate-level course in mixed models, which feels like an extension of “Data Analysis Using Regression and Multilevel/Hierarchical Models” by Gelman and Hill. Just like that book is Bayesian only where it needs to be, “Bayesian Data Analysis in Ecology” does not focus on Bayesian methods, but introduces Bayesian analyses after a tour of the “mainstream” aproach. The overall impression is very positive, and it is unfortunate that the book's reach may be limited by the accurate-yet-too-specific title, and the publisher's rather greedy pricing.

About the Author
Larry Wayne “Chipper” Jones Jr. was a third baseman who spent his entire nineteen-year MLB career playing for the Atlanta Braves and all twenty-three years as a professional baseball player in the Braves organization. This was an excellent book that I could not put down

This was an excellent book that I could not put down. You don't have to be a Braves fan or even a Chipper fan to enjoy this book. It was well written and really gives good insight on what it was like for Chipper growing up as a elite young prospect, going through the draft process and realizing his dream of playing professional baseball. He doesn't sugarcoat anything and owns up to his mistakes in his personal life which I admired. I especially enjoyed his stories of his fellow teammates and what it was like playing and goofing around with Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz and Bobby Cox among others. A must read for baseball fans and a great biography!

Nostalgia is a Beautiful Thing

I've been a diehard Braves fan since the early '80's. Living in the Northwest, all my vacations since 1992 (when I first saw them in person in San Diego) have been spent traveling to see them. After all the years of losing in the eighties, the 14-year streak of winning the division was like a little slice of heaven ... and, of course, Chipper was a huge part of that. Reading this was kind of strange in that I remembered a lot of the games Chipper talked about and that, in turn, brought back events that were happening in my life. I had some difficult experiences, but the Braves were always on TV when I got home and I could put my own problems on the back burner and spend three hours cheering on my heroes ... who never disappointed me. Thank you, Chipper, for this nostalgic walk through your, the Braves and my past.

Very well written and should be a best-selling book! Chipper is my all time favorite player for the braves! I recommend this book to anyone that loves baseball!
