About the Author Dr. Fred R. David is the sole author of three mainstream strategic-management textbooks: (1) "Strategic Management: Concepts and Cases," (2) "Strategic Management Concepts," and (3) "Strategic Management Cases," These texts have been on a two-year revision cycle since 1986, when the first edition was published. He delivered the keynote speech at the twenty-first Annual Latin American Congress on Strategy hosted by the Centrum School of Business in Peru. Dr. David recently delivered an eight-hour Strategic Planning Workshop to the faculty at Pontificia Universidad Catolica Del in Lima, Peru, and an eight-hour Case Writing/Analyzing Workshop to the faculty at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah. He has received numerous awards, including FMU's Board of Trustees Research Scholar Award, and the university's Award for Excellence in Research given annually to the best faculty researcher on campus, and the Phil Carroll Advancement of Management Award, given annually by the Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) to a management scholar for outstanding contributions in management research. This book will challenge you to think outside the box and get your "creative juices" flowing!

The book have exercises that challenge you in new ways to use your sketchbook as a designer. I would always just sketch designs in my sketchbook and wouldn't think to use it for the many ideas listed in the book. I also would never completely fill my sketchbook. I would recommend this book to any aspiring fashion designer who is kind of new at using their sketchbook and don't know where to start in it. After reading this book you will get over the fear of messing up the clean white pages in your sketchbook. I do warn that if you expect for there to be material that teaches you how to sketch designs that this is not the book. I would recommend Fashion Sketchbook by Bina Abling for that matter. Other than that, this book is a great buy.

Love this book!~ It takes a fresh and inventive approach to using the sketchbook as a design tool.

Truly wish that this was used as a text for fashion design classes. Many of the current texts are stale and uninspiring. This book gets you thinking outside the mundane.

Note that another reviewer said this won't teach you to illustrate -- disagree a bit on that -- one example is the "inkblot" exercise -- easily applied to illustration. Moreover, the author is a fashion illustrator so his sketchbook ideas are are informed by that discipline.

Plan to do all of the exercises in this book to shake loose the cobwebs!

I love it. It has exercises and explanation. You won't regret. The most useful book that I have ever bought!!!!! It isn't book like bla-bla-bla...you must have a good Idea to create, it teaches you how make that idea first!!

Makes you think!

This play makes you think....think about your own life. The action centers around a group of 'down and out'ers in a dive bar for career drunks, located in 1920s New York. The plot develops when Hickey, a long-time occasional visitor, returns, and tries to encourage these ne'er do wells to improve their lives.

A great play, with fantastic speeches and vivid imagery. The characters are colorful, and use a lot of language, and the subject matter of the play may offend more sensitive readers. This play is thought-provoking, and made me think about the direction of my own life, and the lies I tell myself about why I can't/won't do some things to make my life better...and where I may end up if I don't change my own direction....which seems to be the author's intent.

This play is definitely worth the read, with few weaknesses, if any, to list. Entertaining, thought-provoking, colorful, and serious. Occasionally funny, but very interesting.

Dark and thematic, very well done

Really enjoyed this story, it is unpredictable and speaks on human nature in an unusual/original way.
I love less than dashing characters and this story is chock full. It really gets to the dark parts of the human psyche. How we dilute ourselves, use each other and succumb to the worst part of ourselves more often than we all would like to admit. I'm in my late 30s now and could relate to the idea of just 'giving up' moreso than when I was younger. I probably would like this less if I read this as a teenager or in my early 20s. You need to have lived a bit and been truly disappointed in life before you can relate to the material fully.

One of the greatest plays ever written. As good as anything by Sam Beckett.

I'd seen the play decades ago, the version with Lee Marvin as Hickey and Fredric March as Harry Hope. Robert Ryan stole that show. Excellent version, almost as good as the one with Jason Robards. Laid out here in written format is very good as well.

There are all kinds of critics that branded this play as pessimistic..... Illusions, delusions, loss of courage, guilt and insanity and the rest of the human condition are covered pretty well by O'Neill. He had compassion for his characters in this play because he knew these types and he was one......

Conversation and dialogue by misfits and losers in a seedy bar in New York in 1912 may not appeal to people today but if you are the type of person looking for the truth in art...you'll find it here....

The Casa welcomed girls in bad health and with little future, hoping to save them from an almost certain life of poverty and drudgery. Yet this "safe" house was cruelly dangerous. Victims of Renaissance Florence's sexual politics, these young women were at the disposal of the city's elite men, who treated them as property meant for their personal pleasure.

With scholarly precision and journalistic style, Terpstra uncovers and chronicles a series of disturbing leads that point to possible reasons so many girls died: hints of routine abortions, basic medical care for sexually transmitted diseases, and appalling conditions in the textile factories where the girls worked.

Church authorities eventually took the Casa della Piet� away from the women who had founded it and moved it to a better part of Florence. Its sordid past was hidden, until now, in an official history that bore little resemblance to the orphanage's true origins. Terpstra's meticulous investigation not only uncovers the sad fate of the lost girls of the Casa della Piet� but also explores broader themes, including gender relations, public health, church politics, and the challenges girls and adolescent women faced in Renaissance Florence.

In 1554, a group of idealistic laywomen founded a home for orphaned and homeless adolescent girls in one of the worst neighborhoods in Florence. Of the 526 girls who lived in the home through its first fourteen years, only 202 survived. Nicholas Terpstra is a professor of history at the University of Toronto and author of Abandoned Children of the Italian Renaissance: Orphan Care in Florence and Bologna, also published by Johns Hopkins, and Cultures of Charity: Women, Politics, and the Reform of Poor Relief in Renaissance Italy.

A fine example of avant-garde scholarship

Terpstra's book is a fine example of avant-garde scholarship that pushes the boundaries of historical speculation to the limit. This does not mean that his analysis is driven by theory: quite the opposite. His meticulous research seeks out every scrap of evidence bearing on the question of what was killing the girls of the Casa della Pieta, a home for abandoned teenage girls in sixteenth-century Florence. But all his effort comes up short of providing a definitive answer. Nevertheless the value of the book lies in the questions he asks and the logic of his analysis of the possible causes. And even if he can't provide a definitive answer to the book's main question, his work reveals in sordid detail the effects of Florentine sexual politics in the late Renaissance on the lives of teenage girls. In the concluding chapter, paying homage to Natalie Zemon Davis's famous work, Fiction in the Archives, he shows us how historians' accounts of the same events can differ radically based on their differing perspectives and purposes. This means that it is virtually impossible ever to be sure we know "what actually happened." As this conclusion indicates, Terpstra's book is scholarly in its approach and requires a fair amount effort and determination on the reader's part. I've assigned it to upper-level university students who find it a bit of a slog. But for those who really want to know what Renaissance Florence was like in all its grittiness, this is a must-read book.

Sex and Death in Renaissance Florence

Nicholas Terpstra's Lost Girls: Sex and Death in Renaissance Florence is a thoughtful examination of a thoroughly fascinating question - why the adolescent girls in the Casa della Pieta were dying in alarming numbers - that reaches a satisfying, if not definitive, resolution. Terpstra's explanation of the role in the social structure of sixteenth-century Florence of the Pieta and its patrons is made even more interesting by his obvious deep concern for the women. I certainly enjoyed this book a great deal.

The problem, however, lies in the editing. Though Terpstra's habit of referring to the three girls he mentions near the beginning gets somewhat annoying (how many times do we really need to hear the phrase "girls like Margherita, Maria, and Maddelena"?), what's even more disturbing is how many sentences appear to have been left unchecked. The book is riddled with editing errors. For example, near the end, when Terpstra is considering the effects of French pox (most likely syphilis, in modern terms), the following sentence appears:

"They were more likely to visit prostitutes and brothels and were more likely to be exposed to the disease and later to pass it on to their wives, who could in turn infect pass it on to their children." (pp. 160-161)

It's fairly clear that Terpstra meant either to claim that mothers could "infect" or "pass it on to" their children, but the sentence construction makes no sense as-is. In these instances I think that the Johns Hopkins University Press has done the book a disservice.

Nevertheless, this book is otherwise quite good and is definitely worth reading.
