About the Author
Dr. Yong Bai obtained a Ph.D. in Offshore Structures at Hiroshima University, Japan in 1989. He is currently President of Offshore Pipelines and Risers (OPR Inc., a design/consulting firm in the field of subsea pipelines, risers and floating systems. In the 1990's, he had been a technical leader for several Asgard Transport pipeline and flowline projects at JP Kenny as Manager of the advanced engineering department. Yong was previously a lead riser engineer at Shell and assisted in offshore rules development at the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) as Manager of the offshore technology department. While a professor, he wrote several books and served as a course leader on the design of subsea pipelines and irsers as well as design of floating systems. He also serves at Zhejiang University in China as professor.

Fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and an honorary professor in Queen's University, UK. His research interest includes structural reliability, durability of reinforced concrete structure, health monitoring of concrete structures, and fundamental theories of concrete structures and their applications. He founded the group on Durability of Concrete Structures in 1995 at Zhejiang University, which carries out research on the durability problems regarding environments, materials, concrete components and structures. He has been awarded 20 research grants by the Chinese government and has published more than 200 articles, co-authored 9 monographs. He also won 3 National Awards for Science and Technology Progress and 5 Science & Technology Awards of Zhejiang Province. Prof. Jin previously held research fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Norwegian Council of Research.

About the Author
Richard Demetrious was born in southern Sydney in the late 70's and grew up there till he was 18. As an adolescent, he indulged in many of the typical activities of the youth in those days including drugs, alcohol, surfing, 'moshing' etc. After high school he moved to Wollongong to attend university and eventually quit the vices of the past to go onto the spiritual path. His first book From Beer to Buddhas, outlines his journey of self discovery and all the struggles and difficulties he faced.

Every saint has a past and we sinners a future

Hey, where's the beard to go with the long hair? Interesting topic Rich. We all have life changing stories to tell, but few have the memory nor time to pen our journey. Seems losing all those brain cells early in life has not affected the authors eloquence and flair. Key theme is this book is that Meditation and lifestyle changes are paramount to happiness, yet every saint has a past and we sinners a future. Most readers will find parallels to their own life in this light-hearted novel, thanks for enriching life dude!

Warm, Honest, Engaging

I found this an interesting recount of one man's adolescence, filled with some twists and turns that were truly surprising. Told in a warm manner with a good dose of dry humour, it's an easy read. For anyone seeking a sense of meaning and direction, I would highly recommend.

Although the dragon gates have opened wide in the past decade, in 1900 China tried to shut out all things foreign amidst the hysteria of the Boxer Rebellion. This intimate account of rural missionary life in the 10 years that preceded the Rebellion, culled from Price's letters home, touchingly counterpoints her attempts to preserve American-style domesticity with observations of an altogether foreign land that could neither understand her nor be understood by her. The Price family lived in Shanxi province from November 1889 until they were murdered in August 1900. They tried to impose a wholly alien religion on an ancient culture; they were destined to fail. The volume could have benefited from more pruning, but its record of missionary and Chinese life, and its tale of ordinary mortals traveling steadily toward their doom, makes compelling reading.

This remarkable cache of letters, journals, and illustrations records the lives of a family of American missionaries in China a century ago. Charles and Eva Price, with their children, went to China in 1889 and made it their home until 1900 when they were murdered by the Chinese soldiers who were supposed to be protecting them from the Boxers, an anti-Christian, anti-foreign sect. The letters, especially Eva's, present a fascinating account of life in China among American missionaries. Unfortunately, the materials are poorly edited. For example, no attempt has been made to find and use available Chinese documentation about the Price's murder. The addition of such material would have made this more interesting reading.

A Clash of Cultures

This is a piece of "token" history. It is compiled from letters sent home by a missionary couple (most by the wife) in China 1890-1900. They relate a time when the missionary appeal, especially to China, was strong among Young American college graduates. These letters describe living in a village in interior China in a house lacking most expected comforts. They did have several servants. The letters are not complaints, in spite of difficult living conditions, and two of their children died, a third was born. They steadfastly believed that they were doing "the Lord's work" in trying to convert as many Chinese as they could to Protestant Christianity. There are reports of hearing anti-Western sentiments, some violence, which came closer to them in the last years as the movement known as the Boxer Rebellion raged into their neighborhood and murdered a number of missionaries, including the Prices and their young daughter. The collection is a viewpoint, well over a century later, on another era of Americans who wished to help people, as they saw it, amidst a clash of cultures.

The 1954 discovery and subsequent autopsy of a 500-year-old mummified Inca boy, victim of human sacrifice, inspired this archeological, anthropological detective story by Omni and Discovery writer Tierney. His research into the origins of human sacrifice involve encounters among the Incas of the high Andes where priests and witches still conduct sacrificial killings combining Christian and ancient pagan rites, both of which are usually accompanied by heavy consumption of alcohol. Described in detail are methods of victim selection, execution and reasons for these acts--which include deification of the victim, propitiation of gods and of natural forces. Tierney's analysis of the complex evolution of attitudes toward human sacrifice from the actual to the symbolic, e.g., from Crucifixion of Christ to Eucharist, is treated summarily as little more than an addendum to his firsthand accounts of his Andean adventures. Human Sacrifice is not what you think it is.......

The Highest Altar by Patrick Tierney is an amazing first hand account of human sacrifice why it was and is still being done in South America,and around the world all ancient cultures have their stories of a spilling human blood payment to the gods, all wars can be called human sacrifice as well it is an offering to our bloody alien gods....who have done a great job of hiding their existence, but deep research will bring them to the forefront of your consciousness, but many will fight this awareness today in church the pastor talked about the jewish blood sacrifices to god, he described how the perfect unblemished animal was cut up, (in human sacrifice the most perfect beautiful children were sacrificed by the Ancients ), I was stunned its the exact way that human victims are cut up....the pastor said that the blood is the life force that god demands from us, I say not "God" but fallen angels/demons or extraterristial beings who feed off human beings energetically and physically because they have cut them selves off from the Eternal Source. Why don't people get it any bloody sacrifice needed by a god is not the true God.

The Highest Altar is the most important book I've read this year the way he writes its like you are there with him on the adventure of a lifetime, he is a very courageous man who has given me the information that I have been seeking for a lifetime as I am Aztec and was horrified at their sacrifices, and couldn't find any information that answered my question which was WHY hurt other human beings, through my research now I know that they the people who did and do this are terrified of the "gods" who have demanded blood sacrifice for thousands if not millions of years using the upheavels of Nature to get people to murder for the good of all.

Thought-provoking book on ancient and today's human sacrifice

This is one book that will hold you until the end. Whether you are fascinated with human sacrifice, with ancient cultures of South America, with mountain hiking or with little known clues to the Bible, you will find all of that in Patrick Tierney's book.

The author gives a good historical background on the ancient Inca custom of taking children or young adults to the top of high mountains to sacrifice them to the gods. He then visits places in Chile and Peru where shamans allegedly practice human sacrifices even to this day. Tirelessly going from one shaman to another, to victim's families, police and anthropologists, he is able to put the pieces of the puzzle together, in a part that reads like a detective story.

The last part deals with Western civilization's own involvement with human sacrifice in Judaism and Christianity. In fact, claims the author, most if not all religions hide the skeleton of human sacrifice in their closets. Human sacrifice used to be an important element of religious practice that was eliminated in reforms in Judaism only to be brought back to the forefront with the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. Although interesting, that part makes so many various interpretations, most often hastily that it is difficult to digest it all and to take seriously. I thought his interpretations and detective work in the first parts of the book made more sense because they were more carefully articulated.

It is an out-of-print book but, knowing that human sacrifice is still going on in South America now well into the 21st century (look at the news), I think it is an important read, especially since so many books on the ancient Incas are mostly mute with regards to the extent of human sacrifice. This is, all in all, a very thought-provoking book and worth to seek as a second-hand copy.

Short Animal Stories Gently Promote Modern Christian Values

The characters in these books have strong personalities that are consistent as they recur throughout the series of short stories. Mischievous monkeys are usually getting in trouble and often suffer because of their foolishness. Each of the stories also highlight a strong moral which will help children understand biblical principles and how they can be applied to our everyday lives in our modern society. The stories are just the right length for reading in about 20 minutes and characterizing the voices of each of the animals is fun.

Too scary for my 8 year old

We had one of the orginal Jungle Doctor books, and my kiddo loved it. We are always looking for good pure books for her to read. I got her this for Christmas but she disliked it soo much. It had some really scary stories in it and she was up crying because she couldn't get them out of her head. Needless to say I was surprised and sad that I bought it for her. I would stick with the orginal Jungle Doctor books.

EXCELLENT BOOK!

I had an old copy from when I was little (and it was an old book then), but it has basically come apart at the binding. This book covers all the basics of Christianity in one of the most easy-to-understand ways I've ever run across. The only thing I didn't care for is the newer version of this book (I've bought several to give to friends) swaps out one of the older stories. If possible, I'd suggest looking for one of the older print ones in the used section. Either way though, this is still an absolutely wonderful book, presenting the gospel in parable form, making it clear and easy to understand. I love it.

About the Author
Per Mollerup is Professor of Communication Design at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. He previously edited and published Mobilia Design Magazine and Tools Design Journal in Copenhagen, Denmark. From 1984–2009 he was the owner and principal of Designlab in Copenhagen, an award-winning design consultancy specialising in wayshowing and branding. Great Help for Laypeople and Designers Who Work With Information Visualizations

Looking to compose an informational dashboard or an annual corporate report that is snap-easy to understand for its users? This book will be of great help. I didn't buy this one through Amazon, so I'm not a verified purchaser, but I do want to comment that this book (along with The Wall Street Journal Guide to Information Graphics: The Dos and Don'ts of Presenting Data, Facts, and Figures) is really a "must-have" for designers (or laypeople) working with informational visualization: web, print, and (especially) Excel and Powerpoint presentations. Mollerup lays out in simple, straightforward detail how to handle informational visualizations from data charts through to maps. The key to Mollerup's approach is the simple, straightforward, no-nonsense presentation of the content, which helps make the point that clear thoughts and ideas when simply expressed are quickly understood. Five stars.
