This book provides the reader with an overview of the field of Japanese linguistics and its current concerns. One of the main purposes of the book is to provide a forum in which to examine contributions in a variety of areas of Japanese linguistics to the teaching and learning of Japanese in the L2 classroom. This book has at least two interrelated areas of benefit. First, both researchers and teachers benefit from each other s expertise and receive new insights that apply to their respective fields. Second and more important, the book serves as a forum to promote ways in which we can apply linguistic theory to the learning of Japanese as an L2. That is, what researchers have learned from both theory and practice can suggest what is important for the teaching of language; conversely, language educators have a great deal to offer linguists regarding the phenomenon of language. Thus, the goal of this book is to integrate theoretical concepts and empirical research findings in L2 development in order to apply them to educational practice.

About the Author
Dr. Masahiko Minami received his doctorate from Harvard University in Human Development and Psychology. His primary area of interest in research is bilingual education and cross-cultural studies. Since 1995 he has been teaching and conducting research on first and second language acquisition, the development of literacy skills, and bilingualism. He has written extensively on psycho/sociolinguistics with a particular emphasis on cross-cultural comparisons of language development and narrative/discourse structure. He has published a number of books and articles that explore cultural constructions of meaning, the quality of childcare in Japan, and East Asian students experiences in US classrooms. His major works include Language Issues in Literacy and Bilingual/Multicultural Education (Harvard Educational Review, 1991) and Culture-specific Language Styles: The Development of Oral Narrative and Literacy (Multilingual Matters, 2002). Dr. Minami currently lives in San Francisco. He teaches at San Francisco State University, and sometimes manages to take a drive in the country.

the Consultant and the Pregnant Midwife~ a GEM~

in the Middle of snowstorm consultant Jake Blackwell finds a pretty woman in need of his "rescue" he ends up with an unexpected guest~ mean while he is become very very attracted to the beautiful woman called Miranda~ who is his "guest" when she disppears he is upset. The next day he finds MIRANDA is the midwife in his department and she is also about 6 months pregnant~ the fun is having a woman who trusts NO one and has been hurt in the passed having the GOOD Dr. HUNK suddenly making all the right moves~ this is a wonderful Christmas story and one of my favorites by Sarah Morgan. Jake has his choice of any woman but decides he will not allow any more time to pass before he makes Miranda know just how he feels~ I GIVE IT A SOLID 10 OUT OF 10 FOR MEDICAL ROMANCES, EXCELLENT PLOT AND CHARACTERS~ MOVES ALONG NICELY.

About the Author
Mary B. Grosvenor, M.S., R.D. Mary Grosvenor received her B.A. degree in English from Georgetown University and her M.S. in Nutrition Sciences from the University of California at Davis. She is a registered dietitian with experience in public health, clinical nutrition, and nutrition research. She has published in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of nutrition and cancer and methods of assessing dietary intake. She has taught introductory nutrition at the community college level and currently lives with her family in a small town in Colorado. She is continuing her teaching and writing career and is till involved in nutrition research via the electronic superhighway.

Lori A. Smolin, Ph.D. Lori Smolin received her B.S. degree from Cornell University, where she studied human nutrition and food science. She received her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Her doctoral research focused on B Vitamins, homocysteine accumulation, and genetic defects in homocysteine metabolism. She complete postdoctoral training both at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she studied human obesity, and at the University of California at San Diego, where she studied genetic defects in amino acid metabolism. She has published in these areas in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Smolin is currently at the University of Connecticut, where she teaches both in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. Courses she has taught include introductory nutrition, lifecycle nutrition, food preparation, nutritional biochemistry, and introductory biology.

I picked this up at my local library, as I have with many health and nutrition books, but this is the first one that I am going to buy. Most nutrition books I see are full of either iffy science, too much biased opinion, or they're just too complicated for me to follow. This book gives a brief but thorough explanation of all the basics. The text and pictures are concise and easy to follow. I have very little scientific background and I was able to understand all the stuff about mono- di- and polysaccharides, amino acids, enzymes, and all the other molecular stuff and their practical functions in the body. If you're confused about our state of nutritional knowledge today then start here. I wish I'd had a book like this years ago.
