A Quiet Place of Violence: Hunting and Ethics in the Missouri River Breaks, by Allen Morris Jones

In this landmark work, Allen Morris Jones spends a year exploring one of the wildest ecosystems in North America, hunting and examining the philosophical issues of blood sport. In the process, he creates both a compelling defense for the hunt as well as one of the tradition's first formal ethics. Jones argues that hunting must be right in that it returns us to the environment from which we evolved. When we hunt, we're no longer watching nature, we're participating in it as essential members: predator and prey. From this premise, it follows that those aspects of hunting that tend to return us to the world are more ethical, while those aspects that displace us-such as the use of modern technology-are less ethical. This simple, compelling thesis is supported by example, by the highly-personal narrative of a conscionable hunter coming to terms with the central passion of his life. And it's a thesis that finally has profound implications for the way we each approach the natural world. If you're a hunter, A Quiet Place of Violence will help put into words those aspects of the hunt that you have found most essential; and if you're a non-hunter, it will offer insight into the allure of this otherwise puzzling pursuit.

Review
I know of no recent book that explores the hunter's ethic with more probity, more satisfying anecdote... -- Nick Lyons

About the Author
Allen Morris Jones has lived and worked in Montana most of his life. At age twenty-five, he became the editor of one of the West's most highly regarded periodicals, Big Sky Journal, where he published such writers as Annie Proulx, Jim Harrison, and Thomas McGuane. Jones recently resigned this post, after five years with the magazine, in order to devote his full energies to completing Last Year's River, his first novel. He is also the author of Hunting and Ethics in the Missouri River Breaks and the coeditor, with Jeff Wetmore, of Where We Live: The Best of Big Sky Journal. Jones is an avid fisher and hunter and frequently returns to his family ranch in the Missouri Breaks.

Great hunting perspective, don't agree with author's theology.
By Christopher
I purchased the book based on a review in Field & Stream. Having recently returned from my first real hunt, a black bear hunt in NM, and experiencing that amazing adventure, I was looking for a book that could put into words the emotions I discovered on that hunt. The author does a great job reifying the process of hunting. I do not personally agree with his world view on Christianity and evolution, but that did not keep me from enjoying the book nor considering his view points. I would recommend this book for someone that has just experienced their first hunt and wants to understand why they enjoy it so much. The author also provides logical counter arguments to those who oppose hunting e.g. vegetarians, animal activists. I have several family members that do not understand why a person hunts. This book help explains some of those reasons in a concise manner.

The author transitions between presenting his argument and story telling of scouting and bow hunting elk near his home in Montana. I would personally enjoy reading a book of the same ilk written from a Christian's world view. Though anyone that is able to consider opposing view points and learn from the experiences of an ethical hunter, which the author clearly is, should enjoy this book.

A Hunting Classic
By Wyoming Hunter
If you were placing a bet 40 years ago, you might have bet against the hunt lasting another generation, or even another decade. Much seemed to conspire against it, including the rise of an (admittedly overdue) environmental ("ecological," then) movement which saw hunting as being divorced from almost every aspect of its agenda. And yet those same 40 years have produced some of the finest hunting writing ever. Perhaps like Dr. Johnson's line about how knowing you are going to be hanged focuses the mind wonderfully, authors such as McGuane, Kerasote, Shepard, and more, felt a special urgency to turn their considerable talents to a subject that almost 40 years before that Ortega y Gasset said had already been dismissed as an unserious matter by a "stupid" time, which has shown no propensity for growing any smarter in the interval. One of the best "hunting" (which may be an inadequate word until one learns from this very work the true depth of meaning it can possess) books of these latter days is Allen Morris Jones' "A Quiet Place of Violence." Written in 1994, and in paperback for the first time, the book is a superb blend of gimlet-eyed (though blessedly non-academic) treatise, pensee, and eloquent memoir, containing some of his generation's very finest nature writing from the view of the deepest ecologist in the forest, the hunter.

The Why of the Hunt
By Theseus
"I know of no recent book that explores the hunter's ethic with more probity, more satisfying anecdote, more visceral wisdom.... It makes of local blood a convincing modern hunting ethos."
-- Nick Lyons

"This literate, passionate book by a writer I'm eager to see more of, is at once a joy to read and an important defense of the hunt. It's necessary reading for anyone who cares about the debate."
-- Stephen Bodio

"Writing about the how of hunting is one thing; writing about the why is an order of a different magnitude. In this remarkable, compact volume, Allen Jones rolls up his sleeves and tackels the big issues with gusto and imagination. The result is a rich, complex work that deserves an enduring place on the bookshelf right net to Ortega y Gasset."
-- E. Donnall Thomas, Jr.

A quality book from Bangtail Press: two-cloth over hardback boards with a sewn binding. With dustjacket. 142 pp.
