Review
Praise forRise Headless and Ride"Gleaves is a writer after my curmudgeonly historical yearning heart. He's done his homework on the lore and the locale. The novel leaps with spirits contemporary and haunted.Read this novel if you want something authentic of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman. Dare I say it, this should have been the book film makers used to retell old Irving's gem."-- Jonathan Kruk, Official Storyteller of Sleepy Hollow and author of "Legends and Lore of Sleepy Hollow and the Hudson Valley"

High marks for characters, plot, and style
By Dianne Durante
I can count on one hand the number of horror novels I've read, and it only takes 2 fingers to count the ones I've read twice: Rise Headless & Rise, and Bridge of Bones. I like Gleaves' main characters very much, and I'm fascinated by the way they think and act - the twist of sensible people dealing with supernatural phenomena. It reminds me of the way Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter dealt with their worlds. Not that this is just character study: Gleaves also tells a well-plotted, gripping story, with great atmosphere. For example: "The Burying Ground lurked behind, full of tilted cenotaphs and baby stones and frightened angel faces. Snow fell through the early evening starlight and collected on the twiggy branches of the locust trees. It blanketed the graves and quieted them. The Burying Ground had lost its spookiness. It was half-creepy and half-festive now, like a Stephen King novel illustrated by Currier and Ives." Highly recommended.

You won't want to put this book down! What a brilliant, suspenseful thriller. Fantastic follow up to "Rise Headless and Rise".
By Mark Craig
Just finished reading the new "Bridge of Bones" book by Richard Gleaves, and have to say, it was fantastic! I'm actually not a fan of horror films or books, but Richard's writing is so compelling and suspenseful, that it had me hooked from the first chapter of Book one, "Rise Headless and Ride". The cast of characters he's created in this series is interesting, fascinating, and likable characters that you want to learn more about--characters with whom you want to spend a lot of time. The plot twists and turns are absolute genius and unexpected. The style of the writing is, to me, reminiscent of J.K. Rowling, in that these books are an easy read, and so compelling that you don't want to put the book down. I've stayed up way past my "bedtime", even on a work night, because I just couldn't put the book down yet. It's just that good. Also, the historical information and backgrounds are really intriguing, and add quite a bit to the story line. I loved the sequence of letters shared with us, that really told us a lot about the history of the Van Brunts, and why they behave the way they do. Brilliant strategy. It took care of Jason Crane when he needed it most, and moved the story along in a most clever way. Bravo to Richard for an outstanding sophomore effort. It's amazing to think this gifted composer of brilliant musicals and plays (...and they really are quite fabulous!) can also write such intriguing thrillers, and with a great talent for storytelling. This would be a great book to read around the campfire, scaring the Bejesus out of everyone there! The best part of the book, is of course, the ending. The author left us hanging, but in a good way, desperately wanting more, and counting the days until book three is revealed to us. Bravo!

I loved it! I picked this up without reading the first book in the series and I'm hooked- the book stands on its own very well. In fact, I'm going to go buy the first book as soon as I'm done here.

Technically speaking, Gleaves has a good ear for realistic dialogue and does a great job of keeping the pace. I tend to read late into the night and this wasn't a story that even allowed me any downtime chapters to doze off. (Which is good. I love exciting, even if the mornings after are a bit rough.)

I've been to Sleepy Hollow a couple of times (and am also a longtime fan of Irving's story) and Gleaves has obviously done his homework on the lore and geography. It reminded me a bit of Dean Koontz and the way he would always reference cities and roads in Southern California in his stories.

As a huge Sleepy Hollow fan, I have to confess that I like Gleaves' story better than a lot of what I've seen in relation to the subject- it's more than a retelling of a story we already know, but it doesn't veer off course (the way I feel the TV series on fox has done from the outset). This is a good, solid Headless Horseman legend, connected to the original story in all the right ways, making use of the inherent magic, superstition, and witches without, I think, getting silly.

All in all, a great and fun story. I'd recommend it to anyone (not just YA readers) who likes horror.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
