This book does a nice job reminding us of the big picture of human ...

This book does a nice job reminding us of the big picture of human energy systems (aerobic, anaerobic lactic and anaerobic alactic). The essential agenda of the book is to counteract the pervasive HIIT/circuit driven training philosophy and attempt to answer the question of which energy system fighters should be training through objective means. It shines at explaining the differences between the energy systems and what sorts of activities each is associated with.

The book, while touting its own scientific backing constantly, does not contain any citations to back up claims from actual literature. This is very common in sports science books. In fact most coaches don't feel the need to justify their methods at all but rather just say that their athletes are good so clearly it works. However, the book is packed full of reminders every 5 pages that it's backed by the latest science and it falls just as flat in backing up those claims. For instance, the author claims that the anaerobic lactic system can be improved by about 15-30% through training. Where did he get that number? He gives 9 distinct protocols to train the aerobic system which supposedly each cause distinct adaptations. These are clearly mere anecdotes from his experience training athletes. Nothing wrong with anecdotes, but the book uses them in place of the science that was its entire selling point.

Now, there are places where the author has clearly looked at the research but omitted the details for the sake of his audience. For instance, he mentions a study done on the energy production done by each system at various running distances (the important detail was even at 400m the aerobic system dominates). This study was real, but the author didn't cite it. Thus, the book is not a treatise which defends the author's point of view on energy systems to coaches, scientists and skeptics.

You'll see in other reviews that the book also is not a template-driven prescription for athletes. You won't find a ready-made template that you can apply blindly, which is probably for the best. While the book is well written and gives good overviews of the energy systems, if it isn't for scientists, isn't for coaches, and isn't for athletes, then who is it for exactly?

BEST BOOK ON SPORTS CONDITIONING - EVER

I have been in the Strength&Conditioning and Military Physical Training arena for over 30 years and without doubt Ultimate MMA Conditioning is THE best book on developing all-round conditioning - for any sport.

High Intensity exercise remains the best 'tool' in the box for heart health and weight management; however without an underpinning aerobic foundation you will not get the most out of HI work, this book explains all the why's and how's, including a fool proof progressive programme.

I was so impressed that I recommended it to the Physical Training Specialist Advisor Royal Marines as a reference book for the Physical Training School.

Buy it regardless of your fitness goal - you will not buy another...

Strictly for the Heads

This book is absolutely fabulous. If you're looking to read more about grappling technique than metabolic pathways, this book is not for you. If you're looking to increase metabolic capacity and want to know not only how, but also why the how works, this is for you. It's a little expensive, but definitely worth it.
