Dr. Jung never took time out from his pioneering work in psychology to make a concise presentation of the elements of his psychological theories. Dr. Jacobi's synthesis, which Jung applauds in his Foreword, offers the reader a comprehensive review of the central content of his system by a student and colleague who worked closely with him for many years.
For this definitive, new edition, Jolande Jacobi has written a new introduction and revised the footnotes to refer to the complete works of C.G. Jung. The book also includes the complete bibliography of the many journal articles and books written by Jung during his long and productive lifetime. There are eight color plates among the "pictures from the unconscious" and other illustrations which give a better idea of the intrapsychic process than can be conveyed in words.

About the Author
Ralph Manheim (b. New York, 1907) was an American translator of German and French literature. His translating career began with a translation of Mein Kempf in which Manheim set out to reproduce Hitler's idiosyncratic, often grammatically aberrant style. In collaboration with John Willett, Manheim translated the works of Bertolt Brecht. The Pen/Ralph Manheim Medal for translation, inaugurated in his name, is a major lifetime achievement award in the field of translation. He himself won its predecessor, the PEN translation prize, in 1964. Manheim died in Cambridge in 1992. He was 85.

Jacobi on Jung
By John Guzlowski
I have used a number of introductions to the ideas of Carl Jung in my Literature and Psychology courses over the years, and Jacobi's book is the best. My students find its presentation of Jung's ideas clear and thorough.

A must read for Jung
By Brian Tkatch
Jacobi risked her life to study under Jung and is one of the two people mentioned in Gifts Differing: Understanding Personality Type considered as "getting" Jung. (The other is van der Hoop.) In this book, Jacobi explains the conscious, personal unconscious, collective unconscious, and the lifecycle, which is required reading for Jung.
Jung's own books expect you to already know the material. For example, Psychological Types (Collected Works of C.G. Jung Vol.6) doesn't really explain the lifecycle. Anyone wanting to get "into" Jung needs to start here.
