About the Author
Allen Morris Jones has lived and worked in Montana most of his life. At age twenty-five, he became the editor of one of the West's most highly regarded periodicals, Big Sky Journal, where he published such writers as Annie Proulx, Jim Harrison, and Thomas McGuane. Jones recently resigned this post, after five years with the magazine, in order to devote his full energies to completing Last Year's River, his first novel. He is also the author of Hunting and Ethics in the Missouri River Breaks and the coeditor, with Jeff Wetmore, of Where We Live: The Best of Big Sky Journal. Jones is an avid fisher and hunter and frequently returns to his family ranch in the Missouri Breaks.

Great hunting perspective, don't agree with author's theology.

I purchased the book based on a review in Field & Stream. Having recently returned from my first real hunt, a black bear hunt in NM, and experiencing that amazing adventure, I was looking for a book that could put into words the emotions I discovered on that hunt. The author does a great job reifying the process of hunting. I do not personally agree with his world view on Christianity and evolution, but that did not keep me from enjoying the book nor considering his view points. I would recommend this book for someone that has just experienced their first hunt and wants to understand why they enjoy it so much. The author also provides logical counter arguments to those who oppose hunting e.g. vegetarians, animal activists. I have several family members that do not understand why a person hunts. This book help explains some of those reasons in a concise manner.

The author transitions between presenting his argument and story telling of scouting and bow hunting elk near his home in Montana. I would personally enjoy reading a book of the same ilk written from a Christian's world view. Though anyone that is able to consider opposing view points and learn from the experiences of an ethical hunter, which the author clearly is, should enjoy this book.

A Hunting Classic

If you were placing a bet 40 years ago, you might have bet against the hunt lasting another generation, or even another decade. Much seemed to conspire against it, including the rise of an (admittedly overdue) environmental ("ecological," then) movement which saw hunting as being divorced from almost every aspect of its agenda. And yet those same 40 years have produced some of the finest hunting writing ever. Perhaps like Dr. Johnson's line about how knowing you are going to be hanged focuses the mind wonderfully, authors such as McGuane, Kerasote, Shepard, and more, felt a special urgency to turn their considerable talents to a subject that almost 40 years before that Ortega y Gasset said had already been dismissed as an unserious matter by a "stupid" time, which has shown no propensity for growing any smarter in the interval. One of the best "hunting" (which may be an inadequate word until one learns from this very work the true depth of meaning it can possess) books of these latter days is Allen Morris Jones' "A Quiet Place of Violence." Written in 1994, and in paperback for the first time, the book is a superb blend of gimlet-eyed (though blessedly non-academic) treatise, pensee, and eloquent memoir, containing some of his generation's very finest nature writing from the view of the deepest ecologist in the forest, the hunter.

A must read for anyone who knows someone who is struggling with weight issues and/or food addiction!

An explicitly detailed real life account of the challenges, emotions, and struggles associated with food addiction and pain. A heart-wrenching, yet extremely inspirational story that will keep you reading until the end.

Prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster ride, as you follow Kevin through many years of successes and failures on his journey to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. A series of life highs and lows, that nearly any person who has had an addiction of any kind can relate to. I think many would be challenged to not find themselves in some part of this story, which it what makes it so relatable to the reader..... whether they find they are the one facing the daily struggle, the unknowing enabler, the one who is the unwavering supporter, the onlooker who passes judgement without knowing someone's circumstances, or the one who suffers from chronic pain that impacts every aspect of their life and feels there is nowhere left to turn.

Compelling!

Once you start reading you will not want to stop! Personally, I read this in 3 days. I couldn't put it down.

Kevin Rosser writes from his heart. Courageously written might even be an understatement. Reading through the book is like a rollercoaster ride: the emotional ups and downs of anyone struggling with weight, food addiction, self-esteem or body image issues.

Raw, emotional and relatable on so many levels. We are all human and I can say with absolute certainty we have all felt the feelings told in this book in one way or another.

I applaude the author for sharing his story. It's not an easy thing to do to bare your painful past for the world to see. However, it's obvious his objective is to help anyone who is living this nightmare.

Start reading today. You will not be disappointed.

Required reading for all who struggle with weight. The self loathing, bargaining, fear of failure,expecting failure,the agony of knowing "what" to do. Food is as addictive as any drug or alcohol, it's the same disease yet our drug of choice is used to celebrate life,it's what our American culture does and folks like Kevin and I take it to the outer limits.
He nailed every struggle, every emotion,the whole ugly state. Please, if you have a loved one in this battle read this book! If nothing else it will open your eyes, those of us who have been super morbidly obese could use some compassion and empathy. No shaming required, we cover that quite well as Kevin aptly explores and discusses. Thank you for a very honest description

Emma Darcy's characters and books are the best that Harlequin produces, bar none. Jack's Baby is one of her best efforts. Before the story takes place the two main characters split apart because she wants children and he doesn't. But she's pregnant. When Jack is presented with his baby he has to do all that he can to prove to her that he really can fulfill all her fantasies, including being a good father!

Hero is shocked to discover heroine, who he hasn't seen since she left him 8 months ago, at the hospital after giving birth to a child he had no idea they conceived. He proposes marriage b/c he loves her & have a child together. But heroine is cautious b/c she wants to make sure that hero truly wants their daughter & not just her, given his negative views about babies & children 8 months ago.

This Darcy book was a different kind of romance. Hero & heroine are undoubtedly in love with each other. Being apart for the past 8 months only served to confirm it. The crux of this story is how they deal with a major relationship matter that they disagree with--having kids-- especially now that they have a baby. I liked how realistic their issues & resolution were portrayed. It added a dimension to their attraction to each other. I understood heroine's resistance & mistrust. I admired her courage to give hero a chance to prove himself to her and not giving in to him just b/c he says he loves her. Hero's progression from being anti-kids to being an involved father was sweet & believable.

hmmm...SPOILER

It was basically ALL about the baby. How the heroine felt about how the hero will be and how he treated the baby like he did his dog, talking to the baby the same way, and about how each were unloved by their parents. There was no romance in the story. I did not feel a connection through them and the only part I did even remotely like was the end when Charlotte was talking to her brother. Even that was far fetched seeing as she is 3 and can no way articulate the way she was, it seemed she was 6 or 7 instead.

A fairly light read into a very mysterious subject

Enoch is an interesting book if only for the story that it tells. The BFs are painted as real creatures with many human characteristics and many wild animal ones as well. Later on in the book their family, breeding, social and even ethnic characteristics are detailed. They are depicted as quite skittish, secretive and even violent when "Mike" does something out-of-line to surprise or intimidate them. The scene where he tried to take a picture of Enoch was sobering both in the speed and power displayed by the BF in striking out at "Mike" and then crushing the camera like a pack of smokes. YIKES! There is some discussion about BF DNA evidence and its comparison to human DNA and where it might fit into the primate spectrum or within the chimp-man divide but that's about it for empirical evidence offered. Other than that, there is no corroboration in support what-so-ever to any part of the story. "Mike" could have produced at least a few foot print photos, some hair, a picture of his beat-up face after his various BF run-ins, copies of the obviously large food receipts that he was spending on, some journal entries scanned into the book as figures, anything at all to support the story as more than anecdotal but nothing is offered. The middle chapters wander with whimsical and silly internal arguments the author was having with herself while writing it. The author includes a lot of draft material as filler in the middle and later chapters that might better have been trimmed out or edited to a higher level of presentation. You get the impression that much of the book was typed into the word processor once as draft and then never gone back to to clean up as final prose. Overall I found the story believable and the fact that the BFs are still depicted as essentially an unknown mystery is ok by me. Readers looking for deeper scientific analysis of empirical evidence (not) offered, pictures of foot prints, hair, bedding or anything else for that matter will probably be disappointed. If you are looking for a fairly light read into a very mysterious subject that offers some ostensibly deep but unsupported information on the BF subject, they will probably find Enoch an interesting albeit an undeterministic read.

A Study in Trust and Possibility. A Revealing Psychological Journey into a Great Mystery

Nonetheless, this book presents fascinating possibilities, and the author is of unquestionable sincerity. More than anyone at this time, Autumn Williams seems to have catalyzed a major change that is now running through to the core of Bigfooting. I have heard repeatedly expressed the sentiment that "proving" the Bigfoot/Sasquatch to the world would only endanger them and threaten their very survival. On her Oregon Bigfoot site and blog she has clearly delineated the reasons why decades of Bigfoot field research have largely failed to produce conclusive results. Autumn is forging a new attitude both toward the "Creatures" and the witnesses, recommending respect for both. This book offers more than the interesting, often humorous story of Mike, a loner who encounters and bonds with Skunk Apes somewhere in Florida; it will also teach you methodology in how to approach anecdotal accounts and deal with the difficulties witnesses face in relating their experiences. Long-term habituation scenarios are often scoffed at by the Bigfoot Community, and the public at large; but this book makes this one seem utterly convincing. Far from some kind of delusional believer or New-Age seeker of the "Forest Brothers," Autumn Williams is cool, collected, and logical in her approach. Her coming to know and trust the witness, Mike, parallels the process of Mike's gradual understanding of and bonding with this mysterious being. It is a trans-species interaction that quite likely will challenge your ideas of humanness, sentience and intelligence. If you have ever struggled with issues of belief and trust, this book may very well be about much, much more than Bigfoot to you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I just finished this book and am very impressed. The reader must decide whether or not to suspend disbelief, and I decided to, for the sake of an enhanced reading experience. The details that Autumn Williams conveys (by way of her long-term witness Mike) are many and astonishing. Both she and Mike are very articulate so that their dual story really spellbinds. Aside from a whole bunch of proofreading oversights (which I assume will be corrected in a next edition), I have no criticism of the content; I even came to be persuaded by her reasons for believing Mike's account in the absense of "proof," and by much of her critique of the methodology of contemporary Sasquatch research. I have learned much from ENOCH: A BIGFOOT STORY and will incorporate this expanded awareness into my ongoing field research and into the new edition of my own book, IMPOSSIBLE VISITS: INTERACTIONS WITH SASQUATCH AT HABITUATION SITES. Currently, only a handful of books about long-term-witness (or "habituation") situations exist, but it is my hope that this nonfiction genre will quickly burgeon, soon building a solid infrastructure of knowledge prior to "the day of discovery"--when lengthy, persuasive video or a dead body is presented to the world--because on that day the media will seek to spike ratings by provoking hysteria among the general public. The key, then, will be for the millions of suddenly fascinated yet anxious people to have readily accessible sources to consult in order to learn of the astonishing subtlety, intelligence, even the civility, of this species. All credible knowledge gained by then, especially the respectful, highly textured accounts shared by long-term habituators, will probably make for the best barrier between Sasquatch and its would-be trophy hunters. With any luck, the contributions by these ordinary, non-scientist researchers will augment efforts toward establishing legislation protecting the species going forward. Best-case scenario: Though the first man to "bag" a Sasquatch will (inevitably) become rich and famous, the second, and all subsequent, will be thrown in jail for life. Autumn Williams deserves enormous credit for so insightfully advancing this cause.

My name is Joyce A. Ashby and I have a testimonial to doing tapping. I watched a few video’s online to find out how to do the EFT Tapping, and started doing it on mine own. If I can do it so can you.. a bit of studying and reading the books helps also. I had a sore shoulder from something that I did that I’m not to sure how, but I did tapping on it twice a day for 1 week straight and the soreness went away! I started to cry, but kept on going. I noticed that over the last few months that I have done the tapping about my allergy’s my sinus started draining down the back of my throat. At first I thought it was just a fluky thing, but it happened every time I tapped on my allergy’s. I do it at night most of the time, and it also helps me fall asleep. I pass the information on to as many people that I get in contact with that have pain, or other issues. I’m so very THANKFUL to Nick and his sister for the work that they do, and sharing with us the information online, and in the books. I know at first, I was a bit skeptical about doing the tapping because it sounded odd, but I just did it and saw RESULTS!! Some things may take longer to do. When I get a headache I tap as soon as I can with a lot of positive words as I tap. I try to say, “ I’m happy and grateful my headache will go away” with other positive words. Each situation is different. To me with having allergy’s for so long I had to find the emotion that went with it, and tap through that and than go from there. When you don’t have to take drugs to feel better that is the BEST thing ever! Amen to Nick and Jessica for all the help they do.. I love you and I am so glad that I learned about EFT (tapping) thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I have been following tapping for a little while now, dabbling here and there. With this book I am finally giving it my whole effort. With REALLY giving it a chance I am seeing results. This really works. It amazes me that something so simple just works like magic! The book teaches of the connections between body, emotions, and stress that all cause pain, then tapping away those emotions and stresses. Love that it is helping with the bulging disc pain in my back. I really have not wanted to go the surgery route and now I don't have too.

Yes! It works, and now you've found it!!

I've known about EFT for years and have found it very helpful; but the way it was taught back then included some pretty complicated diagnostics, and different 'algorithms' for each condition or problem. It was a LOT to take in, especially if you're already stressed or hurting.

Which is why I am so impressed with this book! Nick has honed and simplified this technique in a truly inspired way. The EFT series he teaches is both easy to learn and amazingly effective. You don't have to be an expert; from the very first time, you'll be able to see--and FEEL--the difference.
